Backup QB Competition

10 posts in this topic

I thought I'd share my comments on the 2 QBs now that Harbaugh has stated there is a backup QB competition.

Johnson, Josh: What’s not to like? The ball came out quickly and accurately. He was a threat to run and converted two long 3rd downs with runs for 18 and 11. He threw a ball under extreme blind-side pressure for a gain of 17 and took a big hit to do so. On the 2-minute drive, he eschewed the run and passed the Ravens up the field efficiently finishing with the gorgeous touch pass to Butler for the TD. He was the Ravens offensive MVP.

Mallett: He had 6 completions for a modest 47 yards, but that included 45 yards after the catch (YAC). However, he threw an on-target deep ball for Aiken that helped generate a 41-yard DPI (Q2, 13:01) which should be included among Ryan’s successes. He was knocked down twice in 8 non-penalty drop backs.

After watching Josh get 1 or 0 reps per practice segment day after day at camp, I have to say it's amazing he could orchestrate a drive like he did in the 2-minute drill then come back and run the offense differently (with his legs as a major threat) when he returned in the 2nd half.

I know people say they expected Josh Johnson to do what he did because of the fact that he's a 10 year vet, but it's the skill set that he showed that has me excited.

He fired quickly and accurately, was decisive, didn't hold the ball, ran when it presented itself, and showed really nice touch.

I'd like to see him get a shot with the ones if Flacco can't go.

Me too.  Perhaps they can alternate series or quarters for the last preseason game so one guy doesn't play exclusively with or against 2's or 3's

Ryan Mallet is kinda like a clone of Joe so there's  value in that in as you can run the same offense. Josh Johnson tho shows his valueness in change of pace and would be invaluable in practice impersonating a read and react style QB.

It wouldn't surprize if we carry only 3 RBs or 3 TEs to carry 3 QBs. Joe is not invulnerable anymore and both these guys know the playbook.

I'm still not buying on Josh Johnson.  Just think he is what he is at this point.  This is a guy that cycled through 3 teams just last year and still didn't play 1 snap.

I'll start buying when I actually see him getting reps ahead of Mallett.

Really not enough data on Johnson to really formulate a satisfactory opinion.

He did look fantastic last Saturday though.

Valid point but it's my issue with Johnson being the backup here.  And, that's not because I don't like him!  I absolutely love the dual threat type of QB's.

IMO, Johnson's skill set doesn't fit the Ravens offensive style because their offensive focus is more on the drop back and stand still in and make all the throws from the pocket type of QB and not on a dual-threat type that can at least extend the play(s) when that pocket collapses.  And, although Johnson has flashed and played well (in most people's eyes) up to this point, I'd be very surprised if he wins the backup QB role.

This is why I like the idea of Josh Johnson as the backup. He's quick and decisive with it throws and runs. And he's very efficient. I think he's less likely to make a mistake than Mallet. Also, I never liked that Mallet seems to hold onto the ball too long half the time.

Every reason why I said before is why I want to keep 3.We do not need 4 RBs.

Remember Tyrod.
