[News] Matt Elam Suffered Knee Injury, Will Require Surgery

25 posts in this topic

Even though I wasn't as hyped on him as clearly some other people are, I never, ever want to see any player, Ravens or otherwise, go down with an injury. I thought Matt had a back up safety spot locked down anyway. They say no surgery is really ever "minor," but in terms of what could have gone wrong a bone chip isn't so bad. Hopefully it will get cleaned up well, he'll recover pretty fast, and we won't have to worry about whether he's on the IR or not.

Get well soon Matt.

And the revolving injury door continues. Get three back, lose three more. We can't get a break. We get Sizz, Doom and Perriman and lose Elam, Pitta and Canady reinjured his hammy after a good play in the endzone. Hate to see anyone injured but do we wait around for an Elam who we didn't pick up his fifth year option and who is on thin ice, or do we just go with a healthy Brookes who is also showing a vast improvement this year as well. My vote is to move on from Elam, doesn't matter if he is a first or seventh rounder at this point. It's his final year, he has been unproductive, he has been injured, let him heal and grant him his release.

I'd rather keep a spot for Elam over Lewis. Just my .02 but we've seen Lewis is horrible. At least Elam has had flashes of being a decent backup.

Makes Brooks job look safe, i have a feeling Elam is a candidate for pup, or ir....I also have a feeling we might see Oz bring in a CB this week as the CB play has been less than stellar...

Wow this is alot to take in for one day. Good news and bad news on several fronts. Alot of mixed emotions right now. The good outweighs the bad but it's still a bummer to hear that about Matt. This pretty much all but seals his fate IMO. Cant see them using the return designation on a backup safety- that may come back to bite us. Looks like brooks might be the guy. The news about dennis so frustrating too only BC it was self provoked and after how hard he worked to get back. Something so petty but somnething that can nag you all year long if it doesn't full heal. Not sure whether to expect him week one or not.

Tough break, literally it would appear. Hope things work out for Elam, just not so sure the Ravens are going to hold a spot for him. Guess we will find out.

That's a shame. I have to admit, he was really looking like a decent safety out there, even though he still seemed to be a hitter and not a tackler. He was diagnosing plays, getting to his spot on-time, and being disruptive. Silver lining: this might take away the difficult decision on who to keep between Brooks and Elam. Have to wonder what they're going to do with him for this season though... IR? Or make him the one IR-designated to return player? Roster him until he heals?

Elam cant go on pup cuz he wasn't already on pup. Put him on IR then bring him back , if we need him, in 6 weeks

I think they were gonna keep Brooks AND Elam and let Lewis walk. Its only a bone chip that has to be removed. Not a lot of healing needed.

Absolutely no loss whatsoever. He was just not NFL material and should have been cut last year. I don't think he had the smarts to play safety in the NFL and was too small to play LB.
Brooks on the other hand has a chance to be a really good safety. It doesn't appear that his injury slowed him down. The guy is so fast that he can make up for some mental errors. I look for him to be a big contributor as the season progresses. Also, I think Levine will be an important contributor. He has more potential than I realized and may be coming into his own. But Will Davis is the surprise. He is playing like a legitimate starting corner. Our secondary is stronger than most of the other NFL teams.
But unless Pees lets these guys play aggressive man to man then they will only be average as a unit. Take the gloves off and forget the bend but don't break philosophy. It gives the offenses too much. Don't give them anything....make them earn it. It will also create more pressure and hence turnovers. There is nothing to gain from a soft defense that makes a big red zone stand. Make that stand on the opponents 20 yard line, not ours..

Decent we can play others that look Good. I mean as a back up on the cheap yes.. However, I do not see a spot for him on this squad. I hope he gets healthy and has another opportunity.

Bummer for Elam. Another team will pick him up though. I just hope this makes what should have been an obvious decision, even more obvious.

Its one thing when someone has a freak injury, comes back to play healthy for another year or two then gets injured again...but when they keep getting new injuries one right after the other and can't make it onto the field, I'm going to label them as "fragile" and write them off.  I wish Elam, Pitta, and Perriman the best but, as of late, they've done nothing to warrant my optimism.

players who have already practiced are not candidates for pup.  ie, if Perriman had been injured one day before training camp last year instead of during training camp,  he would have been eligible for pup.

Get well soon Matt! I campaigned for Matt and I'm still in his corner but when you a Raven you gotta try to stay healthy because the Ravens draft so well you will find out what NFL means Not For Long! #Keepyourheadup
