Just wanted to point out or call to remembrance the fact the Ravens use vanilla game plans in the preseason. This means the D getting marched on is not a huge concern. If this was a full on game strategy being deployed and executed as it was, then yes you would have a valid point.

Vanilla play calling means basic plays, not plays that designed to take advantage of certain line ups or schemes, tendencies, etc.

Moore impressed me. Butler showed great hands. Judon showed once again why he makes the 53 man roster. However this pre-season has yet to answer the biggest question. Return guy. Nobody stood out. The ravens have only only one real question mark. Who's going to be the return man. Week 3 is the next chapter in that story. Other than that this is a solid team.

On a side note. JJ was solid. He made a serious case to be the #2 QB behind Flacco.

JJ only shot is practice squad. He has to forget a roster spot. No way he makes the 53 man roster. I believe we only keep one backup and that's Mallett.

I'm also still worried at the backend the secondary as well. ?

Dean Pees uses vanilla game plans regardless of game type. I've come to accept that the days of our aggressive defensive identity left with ed, ray, haloti, and coach pagano among others. "Bend and sometimes break" defense.

JJ is pulling a Tyrod Taylor. No way he'll make it through waivers. It's either roster, IR, or gone.

It's strange that none of the heroes of the first pre-season game really stood out yesterday. I was really looking forward to see which of them could carry his momentum - but apparently none of the rerally did. Chris Carter, Z, Waller, West, Pierce... If I had to name the guy who I think had the best performance the first two games, it would probably be Butler on the O and Judon on the D.

Also, I think our run game is simply not effective right now. Something must be done in the next two weeks, because it's gonna be precious little when the real games come...

Another unit I've been disappointed with is the secondary. We can talk about concentrating on turnovers ad nauseum - because it's been mentioned just about every day... the fact is that in two games our secondary came up with exactly 0 turnovers. The two turnovers we had were both forced by linebackers. Frankly, I'm worried about the secondary, as I don't see any kind of improvement from last season, although it should be - and was promised to be - an improved unit. Well, I didn't see an improved unit. Both "first tier" O's marched through our D - and especially successful on our secondary. That doesn't look very promising right now. On the flipside, our red zone D is still good.

All in all, Based on what I've seen in the first two pre-season games and read in the camp reports (mainly in other sources where the negatives were much more freely mantioned and discussed), I have to say I'm less optimistic about the season that I was before the camp started. Yep, we had quite some of our "key" players absent - but, as last season showed it, it could easily happen in the regular season, too... And even if Flacco is back, most camp reports said he had a rollercoaster camp: "January Joe-ish" days, "Average Joe" days and some really bad days... so it's really up in the air what we can expect of him.

That two-minute drill was a beauty though.

What the first 2 preseasons games has shown is that the Ravens secondary should have been more of a priority in the draft and free agency. All camp we heard about KC. How he can play everywhere, but where are the splash plays? Ravens, again, used a second round pick on a guy that will see limited time on the field. Orr looks better at ILB and Judon looks better as a pass rusher
Also, Powers looks lost in the slot as CB. Can Pees come up with a scheme to cover crossing routes cause that's open all night against the Ravens. The PR machine must be at work mentioning Elam who still looks like he can't tackle or cover. Brooks, Price and Levine have played better.

Without reiterating everything said previously on this thread, I'm still underwhelmed with our team both offensively and defensively. They may be an improved team but still look like an 8-8 team, plus or minus 1 game.

You forgot to mention ZERO pass rush. The secondary is still playing its usual eight yards off of receivers. I know it's early and it's only preseason but getting a little concerned about our 2nd round pick KC. If he was as legit as he was hyped up to be he would be a starting linebacker.

Have to agree. I know its only preseason but the roster is filled up with more "Roster Fillers" than impact players.

I know somebody was running around last night wearing Mike Wallace's uniform. I was just wondering if Wallace was actually the guy in it. INVISIBLE.

Well it's only 2 preseason games but .... I am NOT impressed. Our D and secondary is got major holes in it, Mallet is not the 2nd best Qb on this team in my opinion, I do not see what all of the running back hype has been about as to me they look slow and unsure where they are going with the ball and West consistently turns his back instead of lowering his shoulder. O line has not consistently opened the holes either.

Makes you wonder what Mr. Garret and Mink have been watching because the over hyped players have shown very little so far OH and where is Correra, he has been billed as Mighty Mouse on here but I from what I have seen he closer to a flea. Harbs and company have there work cut out with this group IMO.

I'm thinking (and I could be wrong) that the running backs problem was more of a O-line problem. For a running back to run thru a hole there has to BE a hole.

We'll see.
They will keep the best 53. At this time I would pick JJ over Mallet.

You might be correct but it appeared to me that West on at least 2 occasions missed the open hole or cut since it's zone blocking but I agree the O line was not at it's best ...

Have seen and heard this comment numerous times as an explanation for the performance of Raven starters in the 2 preseason games. Be mindful the Panthers and Colts have done the same, no game planning and vanilla offensive and defensive plays. With that in mind the evidence is clear this Ravens team is getting beat and beat rather easily, particularly on defense. Sure the Ravens have won both games but I dare say both Rivera and Pagano were more pleased with their ones performances than Harbaugh has been with his.

Getting a few starters back and game planning for the regular season will improve the Ravens but that can be said for the Ravens opponents as well. Here's to hoping the Ravens returning starters and the game planning is that much better than the opponents. It would be great to have nice season this year but an exponential uptick in performance is required between now the start of the season for it to be realized.

Disagree. They are equal in accuracy but Mallett has the quickest release of any of the QBs I've ever seen in a Raven QB. It was part of the reason Aikens scored the TD yesterday.

Agree. I think they missed Urschel at center. He really looked good against the Panthers.

Of all the guys in the secondary returning from last season, Brooks seems to be the one who stands out as improving. He has defended passes, shown he's a consistent open-field tackler, and lays the wood. I hope he makes the team. Other than Powers and Elam, I think there are guys in the secondary that's good enough to make a difference. The coordination matters. Pees is an issue. If Pagano, Ryan, Williams, Phillips, Zimmerman, had the same guys, the defense would be greatly improved.

i'll be ridiculed for saying this i'm sure, but JOSH JOHNSON is a better back up than MALLETT,this is just based on only watching his read and react time, let alone his wheels when knowing a play is breaking down and his arm streangth and he's only been in our system 1 camp? personally i would feel more comfortable if JOE went down only if just for a change of pace guy,i said this after the first game and he only looked better.

JUDON is a BEAST! i feel real comfortable with him coming in to spell SUGGS and DOOM coming off injury,i thought we'd have to sign another pass rusher to do that, but not now!

if i were the RAVENS i'd make room for JOSH JOHNSON by cutting WHALLER,it looks to me that he's not gonna hold up to the riigers of the tight end position or 1 less running back, wouldn't a good qb. be worth more than a special teams tight end or a 5th round running back in BUCK ALLEN,def. keep DIXON though.
