[News] Late For Work 8/19: Will These Five Ravens On The Roster Bubble Make The Cut?

25 posts in this topic

Agree with the makes the team/cut assessment. The fact that Elam is on the bubble as a former #1 pick is sad. Brown being cut as a #2 we traded up to pick is also discouraging. We need IMPACT PLAYERS from the draft, not roster fillers.

Brown should be cut but Elam and Brooks shouldnt be. Kendrick Lewis should have been cut at the end of last season he got burned every game

Where it would be nice to be perfect in every draft with every player, it is impossible. Ozzie is great because of how well he does compared to the rest of the league. Believe it or not, the draft is set up so the best teams pick later making it harder to get superstars in every draft, thus creating parity. Because we have done so well historically, the fact that Ozzie is discussed as one of the best in the league is a tribute. Yet there are those who continue go down the road of "Ozzie has lost it", or "our scouts are no good". Not every draft pick is Ray Lewis or Jonathon Ogden.

I have major concerns with Webb on the roster as a safety. We say in this article Keenan Reynolds can't make the transition well enough to be a pro wide reciever yet if you look at the video of Reynolds making the long catch from Joe (in the video section), he beats Charisse Wright and Webb had him deep and while the guy who can't make the team is catching the ball and running for a touchdown, Webb is looking up in the air with his arms out like he is checking for rain. That's scares me.

With the tennis ball drill, the balls should be dyed brown like a football not flourescent green. Anyone can find the bright green ball against a dark blue sky but the brown football blends in better with the blue sky and will make the drill more realistic.

I think Reynolds gets placed on mystery IR.  So technically they don't cut him.

I'm wondering what happens to his Navy commitment if he doesn't make the team outright and goes to the practice squad.

IMHO, it's borderline infuriating that a player who seems to have seized every opportunity to always being convincing, making plays and proving to be a dependable player time and again for multiple seasons, may only be retained if another player who we have never even seen in real NFL action is healthy enough to make the roster...

I'm talking about Butler and Perriman, of course.

With regards to Elam and brown, I always look at the overall quality of that draft as a whole which was terrible and I'm thankful that Ozzie whiffed on a year where the herbal quality was poor rather than a good crop

As a Ravens fan i want both Elam and Brooks to really step up and make the team, they could spell our future back end. With both watching how Weddle handles the back end will help them both out tremendously. As far as AB all i hear from the LBers coach is he is having a great camp.....Next two pre-season games will weed out players who just won't cut it....JMO....

I think arrington is gone. I think that arthur Brown makes the team. I think that Butler is gone. I think SSS, Wallace and Aiken are locks - Perriman will start on the PUP list but Butler is not a PR / KR guy and we need help there. I think Campanaro and Reynolds have a better shot bc of return abilities. Plus the addition of Pitta (4 TEs) will make it hard to justify keeping an extra WR. I think Elam is a shoe in and if there is a S in danger of being cut... it would be KLEWIS... dont think he played well last year and has been inconsistent at best this preseason. Elam and Brooks look way better. Finally Reynolds- he may be cut and sent to PS.... I think that is a real possibility but I still think there is an outside chance that he makes it. (We need him to come around as a return guy- and we really dont want to use Camp there BC he is too fragile)!

I would agree with you that Butler has become better each year and put in the work.

Personally I think the chances of Butler making the team come down to whether Campanaro can show he can be dependable to suit up week in and week out. Butler has shown he can make plays and is much more crisp in his routes and understanding to get open. Say Camp cannot shake the injury thing, I would then expect Butler to make the roster as well as perhaps Reynolds, given Perriman not being in the line up to start the year. This would also mean that Reynolds gets stashed on the PS later into the season when Perriman returns.

Just my thoughts..

The only area Ozzie struggles somewhat is with drafting WR. Funny enough though he is pretty good a finding vet WR to bolster the roster, which he has done time and time again. IMHO maybe it's because he was a tight end. ha

One play in training camp is not an issue for concern. Only the coaches know what the play call was and the objective of the drill. IT is like assuming something without first understanding the context of the matter.

I like the tennis ball idea being painted brown to be more difficult to spot and catch.

You know back in the 80's when the average safety weighed about 180 lbs having a 53 man roster was pretty fair keeping a team from stacking too many stars. But with the pace of the game, and the magnitude of human collisions these days.....the potential of serious injury of players by playing too many downs is high. I really think, for player safety sake, rosters should be expanded to 60, maybe 63. This will allow enough players to switch out before minor problems become major without teams comprising performance. Sure, fantasy owners will whine about low numbers on key players because of the "spreading of the wealth", but compared to a player's health, which is more important?

GO RAVENS! 25

I like Butler. He is not fast enough to be outside, but in the slot, I think he is shifty enough and has great hands. Although he is a first round pick, Elam needs to be cut. I think the team will make room for Waller once he's off suspension. There always seem to be one to two undrafted guys to make the team. I like DT Pierce. He could be a keeper since it is unknown if Ravens will be able to keep Williams. I can't wait to the next game. The second game is where you can pretty much guess whose may be kept or cut by the amount of playing time.

Ozzie has no talent to select receivers but good at reading stats.

I agree. It was one of the worst draft classes ever. #2 overall pick Luke Joekel = bust (now at LG), #3 Dion Jordan = bust, #5 Mingo = bust, #8 Tavon Austin = bust, #9 Dee Milliner = bust, #11 DJ Fluker = bust, #12 DJ Hayden = bust, #16 EJ Manuel = bust, etc, etc, etc. I count maybe 30 guys in the entire draft class that are quality starters. Every LB in that draft except Jamie Collins has been a bust. Despite Elam & Brown, the Ravens were one of the only teams that got 2 legit starters from that draft (BWill & Wagner).

I only care about "Real Football". Good point on the expanded rosters. maybe add 5 more seven at the most.

From everything I've read Reynolds has been inconsistent in catching passes and fielding punts cleanly. As a sixth round pick that usually adds up to not making the team.

Camp has shown he cannot do those exact things. I like him but he just always has some kind of issue. Some players play through injuries better then others. IMO Camp does not ply through them very well.

I don't think tavon Austin was a bust - he's still a multi-threat player - he's just utilised incorrectly and is a little underappreciated

To be fair, he's not given an option to play through because he keeps getting pulled - you think camp, knowing that injuries are a hindrance to him getting on the roster would let a niggle keep him out?

Travis Taylor (the Ravens 1st Round pick) is widely considered a bust even though he put up much better numbers in his first 3 years than Tavon has. I agree that system, team & coaching directly influences a player's success but for the #8 overall pick, you expect more than a gadget player. He was one of the best WR in that draft class which proves the point about how bad it was - only 2 of the 28 WR drafted that year has done anything substantial in the NFL (Hopkins & Allen)

I was thinking that other day, how much longer can we say Ozzie can't draft WR? Torrey was never the number one receiver that we wanted, but he wasn't a bust like Clayton. Camp and Perriman seem to have potential to be playmakers, but injuries have held them back. So, if they stay healthy most of the season and play well will people start to change their minds. And there are guys like Moore and Butler that should add decent depth to the position, which is something the team never really had in past seasons.

The problem is our core team building draft years are quite a few years back.  2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008....by any objective measure we really haven't drafted core players for 8 years.  That's a long time to go into a slump in today's NFL. After finishing 8-8, we picked up Mosely who is a very productive player. Whether he becomes a core player remains to be seen. No one else since 2008 fits into that category.

You have to look close at our 1st round selections since then.

2009- Oher......we certainly didn't think enough of him to keep him........he was literally chastised in this forum by the fans.

2010-Kindle - They'll say, how could you know?.........Fact is he didn't play for us under very questionable conditions

2011-Jimmy Smith....He can't stay sound.....he's Webb on the corner.  How many pro bowls?...certainly not core.

2012-Courtney Upshaw.......once again, not core

2013-Matt Elam.........here they clearly just fumbled the ball.

2014-CJ Mosely.........He's played well and has potential to become core

2015 Perriman..........Not a play for us.

2016 Big Stanley........we'll see.

I'm not even going to get into the 2nd and 3rd round busts..........you can't draft like that in today's NFL and claim to have been among the Evaluating Elite.  Our draft selectors have been much closer to the bottom of the league than the top of the league over these years and that my friends is our problem.
