[News] Could Steve Smith Or Ladarius Webb Be Punt Returner?

34 posts in this topic

Please no, SSS is coming off a serious injury and i don't want him to get hurt from PR duty, and Webb keeping him healthy for a full season is going to be tough enough....Camp cuts will produce a valid PR if the guys we have don't step up.....Heck, give Jacoby a call....

No way the Ravens risk SSS or Webb back there, unless it's a one shot trick play to keep the other team guessing. Camp or Reynolds are gonna get every consideration, unless they look REALLY bad, then we go out and look for an experienced veteran on the waiver list right before the season opens.

I'm all for Webby doing it. Ive said it several times- Just put somebody back there that will actually catch the ball and make wise decisions. 75% of the time it will go out of bounds or be a fair catch anyway. Would be foolish to sign a "specialist" to take up a roster spot and do us no good anywhere else. The guy is already on the team, and its most likely Campanaro or webb- as Reynolds is not ready. We will try to stash him on the PS I'm sure.

I would look at the running backs for a returner. They all have good hands and we have a lot of them. Forget Reynolds, hes going on the practice squad. If camp can stay healthy the job is his.

Are you that confident with Elam, Brooks or K. Lewis starting at safety? I like Webb, but he's proven to be injury prone, and risking him on special teams is not my idea of using him properly.

As I said- 75% of the time the ball is going out of bounds or being fair caught anyway. Would much rather put somebody back there with sure hands whos not going to start running backwards or muff the ball in the fourth quarter handing the game to the other team...

And that 25% is going to be hard contact. Special teams are the most violent plays in a game. That's why the NFL is doing everything possible to minimize, if not downright eliminate kick and punt returns. So yes, you would be putting him in the most hazardous position playing football: guy's running full throttle trying to hit you as hard as they can. As I said, are you willing to risk a starting defensive player with an extensive history of injuries? Myself, no, I wouldn't take that risk, at least not on a steady basis.

ONLY use Webb and Smitty for fair catch options!!. If for some reason either SSS or Webb gets injured fielding punts, we could absorb the loss of SSS. Webb, not so much.

I say SSSR all day long at returner,it's his last year, let him have some fun and he would be a stake in the heart to many teams,if he gets tweaked it won't be long and we have some good young receivers now,um,CHRIS MOORE.

Punt return is Campanaro's "favorite play in football", I say let him do it! When we (all) enjoy something we often put a lot of effort into it...strengthening it, improving and tweaking it. The passion for the play helps the effort.

Why would they even consider putting guys like Webb and Smith on PR duty when we have Campanaro and Reynolds fighting for the position? The injury risk is way too high.

If I was the coach i would use Reynolds . He a multipurpose player and a Navy revenue maker. An experienced QB, intelligent Navy man and surefire promotion catalyst I would use him in all the pre season games. Option B: For competition use Camp and see who screws up or injures himself.

Hold on Bro SSS is not a PR. Why decimate the CB core? The fair catch idea is absent of deception Use a new face...

That holding the footballs while catching the kick is a stupid idea. CONCENTRATE on what is coming not hosting a coach option.

We already routinely use Webb, but only when we know the punt is going to go near or inside the 20 yard line and Webb is almost guaranteed to call for a fair catch. The team clearly trusts his ability to cleanly field the ball and that's the last place you need a muff. SSS, coming off that injury is going to be highly unlikely to be involved.

Camp - should he be able to stay healthy - is probably going to be the preferred choice. I think he has a much better chance of getting on the field on the offense than Reynolds and it is nice to have guys that can do more than just STs. I still worry a bit about Reynolds being sure handed enough. Turnovers on ST kill, so you really just can't have that happen.

We cut Sam Brown and signed CB Carrington Byndom....I can only think he is brought in for his 4.35 40 speed, has a lot of weakenss, not known as a strong tackler....Not sure why we wouldn't give Melvin another shot, he brought size and toughness......

my thought would be because he got absolutely torched when it mattered most

Agreed. No ST turnovers. I prefer Camp for sure. I also think Tavon could be an option. Webb for fair catches. No SSS. Random but I'd like to see what someone like Brooks could do- fast, tough, quick, strong. Just don't use SSS. We need him on Offense

Did we forget that DEVIN HESTER is currently a free agent?

No. He's coming off an injury, old, and might not have it anymore. Plus wasting a roster spot for someone that can only return would suck. Especially with all our depth this year
