Ryan Mallet's struggles during TC

53 posts in this topic

I know he's the back-up, but I have yet to read anything positive about Malett's performance during camp. Here's a report on Mallet from today's practice. He's received Dud of the Day a couple of times this week bc of his lackluster performance.  Do you think the FO needs to bring in another vet QB to compete for the backup position?

Duds of the Day

Ryan Mallet’s struggles continue and the coaching staff has to take notice sooner rather than later. Again, Mallett’s throws were off target including many directed at the feet of his wide receiver corps. On Friday, Mallett nearly got his receivers hurt throwing balls so far out of their catch radius, defensive backs were licking their chops at the chance to deliver big hits. At one point during practice, Josh Johnson (third string) took reps with the second team offense.

I've heard he's up and down, just like his normal play.

He'll make boneheaded mistakes or throw errant passes but then throw some beauties. He's got arm talent for sure. Bolleresque you could say.

I wouldn't be opposed to making an offer to Mckown

I think the Browns are dangling him as trade bait but I'd bet Ozzie would scoop him up if he were an FA - especially with the Trestman connection.

Mallett's time to shine was after the Steelers game. He should have cashed in somewhere lol. But seriously, watching the other QBs make you really appreciate what Flacco brings to this team. I thought Josh Johnson looked decent and could easily see him jumping Ryan with a strong preseason.

At least we're not talking about him potentially starting Game 1, that would be a frightening thought. Flacco seems to be bionic for a QB coming off of major knee surgery. Most QB's who sustained that injury when Flacco did would not be on pace for a Week 1, truly amazing.

It's definitely concerning right now, but I'm curious to see how he does in preseason first before I "panic." He's always been a guy with high highs and low lows.

You left out the "Flacometer" heading and what it said about Joe's struggles.....

Joe Flacco turned in his worst performance of camp during the early portion of practice. The veteran quarterback was off balanced and struggled to find open receivers. Flacco completed zero passes on his first five attempts during the first 11 on 11 team drills. Even when he was completing passes, he was off-target but bailed out by the likes of Benjamin Watson, Kamar Aiken and Jeremy Butler.

At least he's not Cardale Jones inaccurate. Hit a reporter 40 ft out of bounds

Don't short change Mallett, he fired one into the crowd today. He was clearly just throwing it away but you can still tell the ball got away from him.

Send him to D for L'aell

You want to send mediocre Ryan Mallett to Dallas for one of the most promising young linemen in the league? You think that would work... why?

Probably because the topic is about Ryan Mallett. But I could be wrong.

I didnt leave it out. Flacco, had excellent practices up until yesterday. Not once have we heard of Mallet having a decent practice since the start of TC.

You know it's getting close to the start of the season when any and all topics have the chance of becoming Flacconated.   lol

So how about that Mallet.  Should we look to replace him?

It'll probably be a talking point after first game.

What the heck was that anyway?  Don't tell me it was a fluke, you can't "fluke"  something like this.  It was the Pitts-burgh steelers for crying out loud.  If anyone knows how to pester our QB, it is the steelers.  They have a pretty decent line and pass rush but Mallet looked like a freaking rock star against them.  He had some here questioning whether or not he should start over Flacco, and not JUST the haters.  I myself even thought that we just might have the best back up in the league.  He was amazing against the steelers,   and then proceeded to stink it up against Cincy.  No slouches for sure, but I don't see them having that significant of a better defense.

It's a keeper.

I can see it being used in other contexts too.

As long as he isn't the reincarnation of Matt Schaub I think we'll be okay. If he's tossing up a ton of picks in pre season then it might be a little cause for some concern. As far as McCown...he might be heading to Dallas so if another team is looking for him that means bidding war...no thanks.

As far as Joe Flacco is concerned....are you questioning his eliteness?

Fu Manchu gotta be kidding me!

No.

Our team certainly won't look good if we get deFlacconated.

I think the Mile High Miracle was a good case of the Denver defense getting Flacconated.

Instead of a 7 Nation Army we will be a Flacconation Army! Dooo...dooo....do dah doooohoooadooo.

If we get a new haircut that is party up front and business in the back, would we call that a Mallett?

Why should you be the hammer when you already are the Mallett?

If we have the leader of the Ravenbots; Flacconus Prime, do we have to worry about the leader of the Intercepticons...Malletron?

If i had to put my finger on one thing it'd be Tresman. He got some heat from fans last year but I absolutely loved what he did with this offense, even moreso then what Kubes did. I know of at least 2 posters who will hop all over that statement so......This is not a Trestman vs Kubiak thread!!!!

Trestman's ability to get the most out of the players that was still on this offense was really good and Mallett reaped the benefit of that. This offense allows guys to play in space and your QB should have easy, comfortable and not really risky throws. Now to give Mallett credit he made some great passes in that game, but I though Trestman made it easy for him to play free.

But with that being said, a player is who he is and Mallett to his core is an inconsistent passer. He was that way dating back to Arkansas. Just a strong armed guy who relied on his arm talent to win. Ryan Mallet is who many of us thought he was, despite the stellar performance vs the Steelers.

And in honor of Dennis Green, we're not letting him off the hook. We are certainly not gonna crown his *backside.*

In other news Drew Brees threw 4 picks today in practice. Guess those Saints better get rid of that turkey!

Brees has always been a guy who makes questionable decisions. He's just been blessed that Payton has an offense that masks a lot of his limitations. With that said the Ravens shouldn't get rid of Mallett unless they have a better option, they just have to know what to expect from him.
