[News] News And Notes 8/5: Clarity Coming To Wide Receiver Competition

10 posts in this topic

Clarity is coming to the WR competition....and only two names are mentioned. Mike Wallace and Keenan Reynolds. We know that unless Wallace's legs fall off he's going to be on the field in some capacity as either the #2 or #3 depending on the health of some other players. We know Reynolds is a long shot to make the roster. So please tell me, what "clarity" are we really getting in PRACTICE?

There are guys that light it up in practice and look good in camp that can't play football worth a lick when the lights come on. So yeah, let's please wait for when these guys actually are in full pads and are going up against some other teams before we start anointing people.

Wallace looks like the best WR , Perriman has to be considered a bust until he plays a few games. The core is unproven just like last year.

I wouldn't call Steve Smith Sr., Wallace and Aiken unproven... They will be 1,2 3 respectively in my opinion, barring any injury restrictions. All have history of 1000 yards a season with very good TD percentages, so healthy, this is a very proven core. Word is SS Sr. is doing well in recovery expect to see him by game 3 in the preseason. The 4th position is unknown, however If Perriman shows up he will have to play no questions or he could get put on the extended PUP but that could also be a waste. Looking past that, with the potential of Campinaro, Walters, Brown and Moore someone is going to step up. Clay and Renolds are developing well and also can return kicks. Waller will be available in 8 games so he is an option. The real issue is staying healthy and on the field for this 1,2,3 core. Never know the Ravens still have money available, another Veteran isn't out of the realm of possibility. Aiken wasnt "proven" last year, he changed that.

Well, as much clarity as can come this early in camp ... but here are the takeaways in my mind.

1) You can say that there is no doubt that Wallace is a #2 or #3 no matter what, but just how effective would he be? It doesn't much matter what # you apply to him, it is going to be about how much impact he's going to have. I think that camp is showing we may have reason to believe that he could be very effective for us. Given he's shown in his past that he can be a stud (with pads on), I think his camp is cause for optimism.

2) Because he was a fan favorite, many had hoped that Reynolds would emerge as a #4 or #5 getting time in the slot and Camp would be an afterthought. The clarity is, that hope is a bit unreasonable. It seems inevitable that, unless Camp goes down (which I know we all have the right to fear), he's the guy for to fill that spot role and Reynolds will be a PS player. I know many will scream that he's never pass waivers, but I don't think we have the choice to sit and wait for him to emerge.

Also the article doesn't mention Aiken because he didn't practice that day, but it's clear that Aiken isn't a fluke. He's steady progressing and the chemistry between he and Flacco is ever growing. With or without SSS, Aiken will be a major part of this passing game.

You have a Jeremy Butler in his 3rd season but basically coming off a rookie season because he was IRed his first season. That guy just continues to develop and get better. His route running, explosiveness and big play ability has improved per coaches. I think many came into camp thinking he'd be the odd man out, but with injuries and his play, plus the OC saying he's a huge part of what WR group, I think it's clear he's guy who will have to play his way off the roster.

Then you have Camp. I think so many was/is ready to write him off and may be even secretly wishing he gets hurt so we don't have to get our hopes up with his play only to get disappointed with another injury. But it's clear that the coaches have a plan for him and the fact that they are doing all they can to keep him healthy suggest that. Camp brings a dynamic element to this offense that no one else right now can bring and the coaches want that.

So imo the clarity is that this WR group is really good and will only be better if the likes of SSS, Perriman and Moore can return healthy. Of course game action will tell all but I think even without the injured guys right now, Harbs, Trestman and Engram feel really good about what Aiken, Wallace, Camp and Butler can bring to this offense.

My take on clarity is Smith Sr, Wallace, Aiken, Campanero, Moore, Matthews. Perriman will probably be on PUP if he is not ready by Thursday and eventually IR if guys are shinning in his absence. Reynolds may need a year on the practice squad. I worry about Campanero's health, but the ability is there. Butler looks good, but I don't think he is ahead of the 6 I mentioned. I just hope we don't cut guys like Ochi, West, Brooks, while holding a spot for Perriman and Elam just because they are first round picks.

As it stands right now and until we learn otherwise Perriman and Steve Smith Sr. may not be ready to go at the start of the season. That means your most experienced and proven targets automatically become Kamar Aiken and Mike Wallace, it couldn't be any more clear. Jeremy Butler and Chris Moore are not going to bump them from the starting lineup and really the battle is between who will be the primary third target until Perriman (if) and Smith get back. That's coming down to Camp, Moore, and Butler. Right now I think Camp has the inside track as long as he's healthy. Moore will most likely be the 4th. Butler might make the roster until other people get healthy.

It was a stretch to think that Reynolds, a small school running QB who has never been a WR or a return man in his entire life other than on a playground when he was little would make it on this roster and make any significant impact as a WR. Maybe he'd make it as a returner. He's had ups and downs but the downs are happening way too frequently to trust him as a returner or as a lead target in a passing attack. As long as he doesn't go absolutely insane in pre season he should easily slip to the PS.

So yeah, there isn't any more clarity than what was already common knowledge.
