Question about our history w/ practice squad players

Aiken? Also I remember Jeremy Ross from last year who became our return man and a decent WR while there was nobody left. West also went through the PS before playing a bit, but I guess that isn't "full time".

Pretty sure Aiken was never on our practice squad.

Ryan Jensen was on the PS in 2014, Anthony Levine in 2012.

Only looked back four years, wasn't willing to spend the time looking deeper than that.

Pretty much some guys that got some "situational" time (Josh Bynes), but other than that, I don't see any major contributors recently at least.

Albert McLellan was originally a PS member, starting I believe in 2010. He's since become a regular ST and rotational guy.

Bryan Mattison played defensive line for us and had two stints on our PS as an OL/DL prospect in '09 and then again in '10.

Danny Gorrer started out as a PS and went on to contribute as a CB as recently as 2014 if i recall correctly.

Yeah, mostly rotation guys. Gorrer was on our PS in 2010, he actually played for us a little bit in 2011, but was cut after that season. Signed him again in 2014 when 38 of our cornerbacks ended up on IR.

Its mostly just a hodge-podge of potential depth signings who may or may not get some playing time when injuries occur.

This is primarily why I don't throw fits over losing guys like Darren Waller or other "developmental players" to other teams when they poach our PS. Historically, our PS doesn't produce much. We get what like 10 guys a year, and MAYBE one of them turns into a depth player on the active roster?

Kelly Gregg was actually signed to our PS in 2000, allocated to NFL Europe, and then eventually signed later.

This is basically what I was thinking! If you land on the PS, your chances of making it as an impact player on the team are damn near impossible.

Yea, so Hauschka and Kelly Gregg are probably the 2 most successful players that were once on our PS. McLellan and Gorrer have seen some level of NFL success.

But we;re talking 2 actually successful players, and then 2-4 marginally successful rotational/ST players. So, yea, the odds arent too good.

So all the horror stories I hear from fans about "we can't put him on the PS... he's too good and other teams will steal them from us" turned out to be pretty irrelevant?

Maybe the better question is how often has a team poached our PS of a player and that player turned out to be a quality player elsewhere?

I suppose John Simon is an example of this.

Actually, I agree.  The poaching discussion could be pretty interesting.

I went through every transaction the Ravens have ever made from '96-2012. There were none.

Simon is the only real glaring example. Myers who was taken by the Colts.... we'll see but doesnt seem like he'll amount to much.

James Harrison, but I'm not sure he got poached. Think he just got flat out cut.

Correct, he wasn't poached. Signed with the Steelers during training camp in 04 after several stints with the Ravens and in NFL Europe.

Yea, dont think he actually hit our PS. Steelers promoted him off their PS then cut him which is when we signed him I believe. We then cut him before the season started and the Steelers brought him back in.

Haha, yea.

Honestly it didnt take that long. I found this site that has tracked it and you can put in keywords, type of transaction, time frame, team, etc...

And since each year kinda follows a flow in terms of transactions (RFA/ERFA and own FA signings, then FA signings, then draft picks and UDFA, then some cut/waives, and then PS signings) so it was pretty easy to cut through the mess and find the PS signings each year other than the couple guys that are brought up to the 53, signed by another team or waived during the year.

Only took probably 20 minutes to get through every PS transaction over that span.

I know somebody got poached off our PS last year.  It's happened before, too.

Yeah, but we are looking for players who got poached who actually ended up being quality players elsewhere.

Only took probably 20 minutes to get through every PS transaction over that span.

There was a sports talk show on a local radio station and they were talking about Matt Stover and they were sure he was the only player to have ever played for the Browns, Colts, and Ravens. I did some research and it really didn't take me too long and I wrote into them and told them who the other two players are. They announced it on air and said, "Boy, this guy is either an encyclopedia or he was researching his butt off." Those comments weren't true. It took me about 10 minutes total and it was pretty easy if you know where to look.

So the answer is that there are three players in NFL history that have played for the Ravens, Browns, and Colts.

K: Matt Stover

DL: Dan Footman

DB: Raymond Walls

Then they said, "Yeah..Dan Footman..I remember that guy. Used to wear a gold necklace with a big old golden foot on it!" They didn't remember Raymond Walls. Nobody probably ever would, he was a career special teamer.

Only the first two played for the original Browns team though.
