descent into the maelstrom

Stephane Nembot

I read the article about Nembot and I think I've found a new favorite underdog.  Even more of a longshot (pun intended?) with the signing of Long.  Just curious about what people who actually watch film think of him.

I looked into him quite a bit pre-draft.  He has brute strength but definitely needs some refinement.  The lack of football experience definitely shows in some instances.  The raw talent is definitely there, and for that reason, he's probably a prime practice squad guy.

He could beat out Hurst for a spot. If the team goes 5 tackles, it'd be Stanley, Lewis, Long, Wagner, and Nembot. And if he has the brute strength, he could be seen as guard depth too.

I think that'd be awfully tough for him to do - not beating out Hurst, but making the roster in general.  You have Long, Lewis, and Jensen as backups and that might be it.  We typically only make 7 active on gamedays so 1 of them is already inactive.

Guy speaks 13 languages.

Ya gotta tip your hat at that one.
I struggle enough as it is with my own native language.

Assuming Long doesn't completely flop in preseason, the tackle position is way too crowded for him to make the 53. He could be a pretty good guy to have on the PS where his game could improve under a year of coaching from one of the best in the league.

Nembot is on the outside looking in. I can see the Ravens only taking 8 linemen on the 53 man roster and those spots I think go to:

LT: Stanley

LG: Urschel

C: Zuttah

RG: Yanda

RT: Wagner

OT: Long

OG: Ducasse might beat out Jensen

G/T: Lewis

There are also other more highly rated guys as UDFA's in Matt Skura and Anthony Fabiano. DeOndre Wesley is also ahead of him. Nembot has the size and strength to play but really needs to learn the fundamentals and technique to play. I think it would be easy to stash him on the PS and then perhaps sign him to a reserve/futures contract

I'd be shocked if Ducasse beat out Jensen. Jensen is ascending while Ducasse has always been borderline awful.

Quite the read. I'm always amazed at young people that move to another country for schooling etc with no family or friends to make it a smooth transition.

I hope they try him at Guard as well during training camp.

** reading his comment about people liking to hike, and how funny it is to him because it's just walking up a mountain to them in Africa.  Made me think of this show I watch on Discovery Channel "Naked & Afraid" where people go out live in the wilderness just off their survival skills.

Dont forget about Wesley. They really liked him last year.

Yeah, I did forget about Wesley. In which case, Nembot will be a practice squad guy. Though he could become a backup RT down the road.

I didn't forget about him in my post, but I don't see him making the 53 man roster. I checked to make sure and I think he is eligible for the PS again this year because he didn't play in more than 6 games for the Ravens last season. Had he played in one more he would not have been able to be eligible.

Edit to make correction:

4 players can have up to 2 accrued seasons and still be eligible.

He would be. It's no more than 2 accrued seasons to be eligible. Even then, teams can now have up to 4 games with over that 2 years (but under 3) years experience.

I think the rule is you are eligible for a second season on the PS as long as you didn't accumulate enough time on the active roster (that term is important too, you can be on the 53 man roster and not be active for games and that wouldn't count against eligiblity). The cut off I think is 6 games for the first year. If you breach that you are no longer eligible for a second season on PS. I am not looking at the rules currently, only trying to remember what I read so I could quite easily be wrong about this.

Alright I just looked it up.  I know they've been changing the rules a ton these past couple of years

A "standard" practice squad player is a guy who has not accrued more than 6 active games, like you said.  However, teams can now designate up to 4 players with up to 2 years of accrued seasons, so he would have been eligible regardless, assuming we would want to designate him with one of those 4 slots.

I just looked it up as well. It is pretty convoluted but here is how it goes.

A player is eligible for the PS as long as he doesn't have one accrued season of NFL service. One accrued season is defined as 6 regular season games being on the active roster.

A player with one accrued season can however be eligible for a second season, so long as they didn't accrue 9 games in their first season on the active roster.

A player can get a third year on the PS provided those first two things didn't happen so long as the team keeps a full compliment of 53 men on the roster at all times.

So Wesley has one accrued NFL Season, but since it wasn't more than nine games, he can go back to the PS provided he clears waivers.

Yep so we were both a little off in some respects.  Regardless, Wesley will be eligible and I imagine that's where he ends up, which could be bad news for someone like Nembot.

I think Nembot will be fine. If they really like him they could sign him to a futures/reserve contract. That way he doesn't have to be on the PS or the regular roster and he can get a chance to make the team again next year. Then they could cut him if he's still not ready, let him clear waivers, and practice squad him again. The rules are that if you sign a guy off another team's practice squad that they have to be on the roster, you can't simply stash them on your PS. So if somebody else would want to try to get Nembot from our PS they would need to place him on their active roster.

With how raw he supposedly is I doubt any team will consider him for their team. He's not really close. He's a developmental prospect and I think the earliest he may be ready is in 2-3 seasons.

There are a lot of guys the Ravens aren't going to stash on PS because they drafter them too high. There are guys they have on the roster who are not eligible. A lot of the UDFA's probably won't make the grade.

Can't sign a futures contract until after the regular season is over, and I imagine someone would try to PS a guy like that throughout the season.  It sounds like he was coveted by a few teams after the draft.

Nembot could end up making the PS, but the question becomes whether they want more than one OT there.  We've routinely carried 3 or 4 OL on the PS in the past, so his chances are good, but you never know.  I mean, Wesley could be all talk for all we know and they really aren't enamored with him.

I don't think there's any threat whatsoever (at least as far as it currently stands) that he's in consideration for anyone's 53.  The only real question will be if we want him on the practice squad, assuming he shows a bit of potential.

Right, there was some hype around Matt Skura and Anthony Fabiano. Fabiano has played every position on the offensive line in college save for center. He's viewed probably more of a guard in the NFL and might be able to fill in at RT. Skura is a C and just in case Urschel hangs onto LG, it might be nice to have another option at Center once Zuttah's contract runs out. Pretty much everyone thinks Alex Lewis will make the 53 man and if he doesn't he will not clear waivers to make it on the PS. Be interesting to see how everything shakes out, but with Stanley and Alex Lewis in the mix I won't be so worried if Nembot doesn't stick with the Ravens.

Yeah not worried if we lose him, but you do have to have some hope for the guy after the story.  We have plenty of other OL options though.

Since you mentioned Fabiano, our site did make mention that he would be converting to C for us, so I imagine he's solely an interior guy.

Yeah, I saw that he is listed as a C on the roster and found it odd that he'd be listed at the only position he didn't play in college. Guess he's going to get a trial by fire.
