Updated: Ravens not signing OT Jake Long

143 posts in this topic

If Jake Long can come in and prove that he's healthy enough to suit up or back up the starter, this was a great move for two reasons. The first is obvious that it makes the O-line and depth better and second is that with Jake's experience, the young bucks on the O-line will have an experienced tackle to help them along their journey to become NFL starters.

I believe this was always the plan by Ozzie and gang even prior to Monroe's release which in their mind was inevitable. So, the contrarians who wish to ridicule the signing by saying it was a scramble after Monroe's release are just wrong. I believe that Jake had to overcome some health conditions before the Ravens signed him. He's only a good signing if he is available to play and I believe he'll be ready by the end of camp.

If he's healthy we are immediately deep at the tackle position.

He will be competing with James Hurst, De'Ondre Wesley, Alex Lewis, Blaine Clausell, and Stephane Nembot. As long as he is healthy I think he can beat all of them out for a back up spot. I am not sure he beats Wagner or Stanley out for a starting gig, but I don't think that's the plan anyway. The way I see it he and Lewis can make the roster, but it would be at the expense of either Ryan Jensen or Vlad Ducasse.

He seems to be healthy till the moment its time to play football lol.

its a low risk high reward move and he has the talent and the ethic to make it work so i understand the move.

also id keep jensen over ducasse at this point.

I agree with you. Jensen is going to have to have a horrible pre season or get hurt while Ducasse looks like a beast in order for him to win the battle. To me Jensen is a known quantity and I think he played pretty well last season. Meanwhile Ducasse has fallen out of favor with every team he's been on. Not a good pass blocker, but is good in the ground game.

Have the contract details been released yet? Kinda curious if this is a one or two year deal.

Likely just a one year deal. I can't imagine he'd want two

One year, but no amount stated yet.  He's yet to technically sign.  His physical was scheduled to take place today, so I'm sure we'll receive an update at some point later.

I'd also recommend to pump the brakes a bit. He's signing for what is likely a veteran minimum deal.

At best, he's competing for a roster spot right now. Far from a guarantee he seizes one. Could easily be talking about this guy on the street in a month.

Hasn't passed the physical

Ugh.

Didnt pass the physical?? Not the conditioning test?

Odd bc he was cleared to play for the falcons last year - how would he be cleared to play there but not here? I know different medical staffs have different standards, but we're talking months later.

It's all over Twitter.  Going to see Dr. Andrews.

Dang, man. That stinks.

EDIT: I just read that "his physical is ongoing, and is visiting Dr. Andrews..." which doesnt seem the same as failed. Maybe they're looking for a 2nd opinion before signing him?

Andrews did Long's previous surgeries, so let's hope it's a mere checkup from someone that knows what's going on in there.

Mike Wallace failed the conditioning test - commence freak out!

And, omg, Flacco is going to have to wear a brace all training camp and season.

THATS IS !!!!!!
I am done with this team.

We should tank training camp, preseason and regular season.

Ravens are doing their due diligence with Long and it makes sense. Let's make sure he's as healthy as he says he feels. If he's okay then I am pretty sure he's getting a 1 year deal that might be a bit more than the veteran minimum.

Wallace failing his conditioning test doesn't worry me. Lots of guys have failed it in the past simply by not knowing what the test is all about. And it usually happens to guys that are new with the team. I guess the Ravens run theirs a bit more rigorously than other teams. I stated in another thread that I think it may have been Torrey Smith that failed his as a rookie. Now I am thinking it may have been Webb. The point is they stated that they ran the thing flat out max effort from the moment the whistle blew. When they took it the very next time they passed easily because they understood more how to run it. It wasn't due to the fact that they were out of shape and suddenly got themselves back into shape. I will start to worry when we hear Wallace continues to fail it.

Joe Flacco and the knee brace: a little mental cushion for Joe. If it makes him feel a bit more confident and safe then I am all for it.

I think I read somewhere yesterday that the deal was a 1 year for 885,000 (somewhere around that) and has playing time incentives. I don't know how high those incentives can go up but I don't think it could be that much.

Jake Long has his exam with Dr. Andrews today, per Downing.  Hope all goes well and he's back here tomorrow to sign a contract.

If he fails, hire him as an O-Line consultant and lets move on.

Ozzie should be fired for signing a WR that cant pass a conditioning test on his first try. Clearly hes lost it.

It was Jacoby that failed, i think he failed twice. And Ngata used to fail his first try pretty routinely.

Webb failed first try once after returning from injury.

I think it was Webb who made those comments then. I think Jacoby failed his in his second season with us, after that infamous off season issue with Sweet Pea. He got clocked over the head with a champagne bottle.

Yep, that was the year. McKinnie failed that year too... actually that may have been the same year as water-skate gate when McKinnie allegedly slipped on the wet tile in his bathroom and injured himself so he wouldnt have to participate in TC.

Just goes to show you that hanging out with Bryant McKinnie on a bus with stripper poles in it probably isn't the best way to spend your evening.

The Baltimore Orioles have had their fair share of bizarre injuries landing people on the DL.

Marty Cordova fell asleep in a tanning bed and burned himself so badly he had to take time off. Sammy Sosa sneezed and threw out his back. Glenn Davis got in a bar room brawl and had his jaw broken. He came back and was promptly hit in the face with a foul ball in the dugout and broke his jaw again. David Segui would just simply wake up and fall apart.

Let's revisit that year.

McKinnie started 5 games for us and we went 3-2 in those games.  (Someone fact check me here, I can get a little foggy with the memory.)  McKinnie was a value player. I mean we were getting him for a song, especially compared to Monroe.  I believe he was 33 years old. Now he had a weight problem, but he was working on it. Anyone here a little pudgy?  A little soft around the middle?  When you're working at it is it fair for folks to call you a lazy fatso?  I don't think so.

Anyway, in his 5 games the Raven's allowed 14 sacks.  That's a heckuva lot of sacks and the folks here called McKinnie a Lazy Fatso and said he was the reason our team was playing poorly.  I stood up for McKinnie. Yes I did, now that was 2013 and my profile says I've been a member since 2014. But think back to the guy that exclaimed it was foolish to sign Monroe to big money when McKinnie was more than adequate.  Think back to the guy that was saying take the PFF stats and file them where they belong.  Think back to the guy that said, Monroes objective stats were no better.

Remember something else about McKinnie?  He became a starter in 2012 heading into the playoffs. I forget who we removed from Left Tackle. I'm sure the real fans here can let us know.  McKinnie played great in the Championship run, but like the other veterans that helped bring us that Championship, McKinnie was scuttled...in his case for Monroe.  I didn't like that. I still don't and I believe it speaks volumes about the direction we have been heading since the Championship.

Now  on to Monroe.........He started 11 games for us in 2013 and we went 5-6.  Of course, we sucked. Ray Rice had a bad leg and couldn't get out of his own way. We were missing Boldin and we had other injuries including Osemele.  Hmmmm.......Osemele?..........hmmmmm.  Nahhhhhhhhhh!!!  GO PURPLE!!!  Anyway, I digress....but we did let in 34 sacks in Monroes 11 games.  And from that year forward....Monroe played less didn't he?...Didn't he?????.........DIDN"T HE?

So this year we signed a rookie and cut Monroe. Actually we cut him before we were sure we had a backup plan...you know, an insurance policy. But we have one now don't we?  We got us security!!!!.......we got us Jake Long and all he has to do is pass his physical.  Hmmmmmmmmm..........I don't know........maybe its' just me, but I think I'd ask Long to take that physical before I cut Monroe.  I know...I know.....you just gotta have the faith.

Good Luck Jake, we are gonna need it.
