[News] Late For Work 7/21: Stanley Among Top-Rated Rookies In Madden 17, Monroe Announces Retirement

I wouldn't trade my life for playing in the NFL + the money that goes with it + CTE. I feel for the guy being worried at age 29 about his future health. I wish him the best. I think it says a lot about people who actually take the time to write derogatory remarks about the guy.

Monroe never complained about concussions before and from what i've read doesn't have a history of concussions. That said, he will be able to smoke all the marijuana he wants to now. Thank god for Ronnie Stanley.

Monroe is gone and thank God for it. Here's why. I truly don't believe Monroe would've played more than a few downs had we retained him. He would have feigned an injury and sat down resting his body while collecting free money. I don't think he was able to negotiate a contract that was guaranteed in any manner and that's why he retired. He may just be a charlatan after all. The fact that he comes up with these concussion stories tells me he is setting himself up for a payday from the NFL and is doing all the due diligence he needs to to make sure he will be handsomely compensated when that happens. I am just thankful that we were able to see through this phony and get rid of him. Sorry for the diatribe and this is just my opinion.

He actually retired as soon as the Ravens gave him that multi-year contract.

Wow, that's mean but could be true. He hasn't played much and was nearly always injured after that big contract.

Do we still owe him money?

Gotta agree with you here. He's a total phony. Now he's claiming he had his first concussion when he was 11 years old on his first day of playing football. Give me a break. The quote in the article is very telling: "This is very new,” Monroe said. “I've been released and it's been just a short amount of time since that's happened, so I'm weighing my options right now. I don't feel like I have to jump on one of the first opportunities that come up. And I'm just trying to be patient, wait on the right opportunity and also just decide what's going to be the best move for my family. I have a wife and three children, so there's a lot more at stake than just jumping on a deal." Now all of a sudden he can't figure out anything because of all these alleged concussions. Please, what a phony.

Clearly Monroe underestimated his actions when he decided to sit out games for the Ravens over the past two year that coaches and his fellow teammates felt he could have played in . I personally think that weighed into the decisions of other teams to offer Monroe just a minimum salary, which he wouldn't accept. He also underestimated the repercussions of being the poster boy for using pot to replace opiates. I don't disagree with his message, and I think it needs further research, but it was a poor decision to do that when he knew the Ravens would let him go and he would need to find a job. Also, in his retirement message, I think what he said was telling. He didn't want to go through the cycle of being hurt, rehabbing then healing over and over. Well, welcome to the NFL, where players do that week after week and from week to week. Sounds to me like he lacked a little intestinal fortitude (was a wussy) to do what everyone else around him was doing and I think that is why coaches and players couldn't tolerate his laziness any longer which is why he is out of the NFL. (Mark my words, some team will try to lure him back to play if their starting tackle goes down. Some teams will tolerate anything (Cowboys) for questionable players.)

He suffered his first concussion at age 11 and suffered one last year. There's 18 years inbetween there where he could have.

Not all players have to be vocal about injuries.

The awkward thing with all the above posts is that Monroe had serious interest from at least five to six teams and we know for certain that the 49ers, Seahawks, and Giants wanted him.

If he truly was only about the money, he'd have signed with the Seahawks for a good amount to play LT.

The pothead claims he had a concussion when he was 11 on the first day he played ball. OK, I believe him. NOT.

He would rather smoke pot than play ball which is why the Ravens drafted Stanley and cut him. Good move by the Ravens.

He truly wants to focus on his mary jane,

Funny how he worries about the concussive effects on his brain, but not the ones caused by the use of narcotics. I know...they all believe it will heal their brain rather than cause more damage. Speaking from experience, I wish I never found that drug 40+ years ago and used it as long as I did. I can blame some on old age, but the rest is surely due to the damage done in the 70's and 80's.

I saw the irony there as well. I actually just read about a study that shows that long term pot smokers had more of a decline in cognitive abilities compared to people who don't smoke it, and I've seen other studies that have shown similar results. On the other hand, prescription pain killers have caused their share of issues as well.

Maybe it just wasn't the money that he wanted or thought he should get? What I don't understand is knocking a guy on injuries. We really have no idea if he was concussed or not. Maybe it was not about injuries at all and just the plain old fact that he was asking for a certain amount that no other team wanted to pay based on his recent participation in games the last 2 years.

Too bad he was never suspended for pot use

Cannabis isn't classified as a narcotic and using medical marijuana over an opiate is certainly not a new idea.

Considering how desperate Seattle is for a LT, I can't believe he couldn't get the money he wanted.

He could have even held out for an injury, but he chose not to.

I really think he's just scared.

Peace. All I wanna know is does this effect our compensatory pick next year?

No. But from my understanding, Atlanta needs to retain Shaub and Upshaw on their active roster for us to get a comp pick. Anybody let me know if i'm wrong about this.

I don't think we get a compensatory pick regardless. From my understanding it's from player leaving in FA not getting cut.

I feel bud. My memory sucks and it wasn't concussions that did it. Monroe and his family should realize that it could be the marijuana making him forget things
