[News] The Competition 2016: Safeties

Webb is certainly the favorite to start along side of Weddle based mostly on the size of his contract. It remains to be seen if he can outplay the rest of the competition. I would have to see it happen to be sure.

I have a lot of faith in Webb's abilities at safety.  I don't think there's any question that his speed and coverage abilities will be better than pretty much every other safety we've had since Reed left.  Durability and experience at safety are really the only questions since he hasn't played there since college.

My biggest concern is Webb staying healthy. Hes really small for a safety (18 lbs lighter) especially since a lot of teams are throwing to running backs and tight ends a more. Can he hold up? That's my question with him. I see Brooks making the team over Elam. And Levine's versatility probably will get him on the team.

Webb is only 30 but looks like he 40. That returning players list, I'm just not "feeling" it with these guys.

I think part of the reason we are moving Webby to safety is his age, inability to stay healthy at corner, and his straight corner skills diminishing with age and injury factoring in. Having said that, I think he could be a top tier free safety if he stays healthy.HUGE IF at this point. He has range, ball skills, and won't have to try and stick on somebody's hip the whole play. The staff has also talked about the versatility of playing W&W at both safety spots. Although this will happen occasionally, I DONT LIKE IT. Let Webb perfect his back end free safety defense, and keep him out of the box in hopes of keeping him healthy. The occasional Blitz is ok though considering he's not bad in that department. Weddle has always been one of my favorite NFL players. HUGE pick up there. W&W will be awesome if Webby picks up on the position at all. Weeks 3-6 should be an early test for that theory as we'll play gunslinger Carr, then Bortles with A&A, then Cousins with all his receiving targets, then Eli and Beckam after that. Of course Brady will be the ultimate test for Webby, which conveniently enough is towards the end of the season and close to the playoffs. As well as being at the gold standard of where to win on the road right now. I'll be pretty upset if Elam wastes a roster spot. Time to accept it and MOVE ON. Could be time with Arthur Brown as well, but I hope not. Painful, Painful draft that year. Lewis is a very solid back up, but needs to make more plays. I think this year is the year we really find out what T. Brooks will have to offer now, and in the future. Definitely not getting my hopes up with him, but there is a lot of potential there. Unfortunately he hasn't shown us much yet. Lewis, Webb, and Weddle are the top 3 safeties. With Brooks and Levine battling for 1 or 2 spots. Bottom line, looks like our best safety group since the hall of famer left.

Pretty scary group. All the good corners are usually gone by round one and def gone by the second. Hopefully, our D-Line can make up for another make shift secondary.
