"The Ravens have had a lot of success finding those big bodied diamonds in the rough on day 3 of the draft". If that's the case what diamond in the rough turned into an impact player vs a roster filler?

Define impact player?

In recent years, guys like Rick Wagner and Pernell McPhee come to mind.

Actually, looks like the Skins are going to school on the Flacco contract. Average Joe has been awful since he signed his contract. Fair contract at the time. Can't blame the Ravens. Don't think Washington wants to be stuck with an Albatross for the next five years, and be hamstrung with money issues for the next decade due to one bad contract. Jump Ball Joe at no. 10, huh? HAHAHAHA. 25 is about right.

How are they going to school again? By paying Cousins $20M on a franchise tag? What do you think happens when he performs the exact same in 2016?

He gets a large extension. That's what happens. His AAV will have a 2 in front of it.

Considering how irrelevant the Skins have been the last two decades and how desperately they've tried to find even an "average" franchise QB, I don't think they'll have any reservations about throwing more big money at a questionable player.

Players want the most money. A deal similar to Malik Jackson's deal is what it would take to sign him before free agency - 6 years $90 million. Is he worth $15 million per year?

The only players signing extensions before FA are the players getting offers to make them the highest paid players at their positions (Andrew Luck, Harrison Smith, Fletcher Cox, JJ Watt, etc). Jimmy Smith was 5 years ago - agents & players don't do that anymore coming off their rookie contracts.

That's why you pay him now. He'll be worth much more NEXT season, assuming his current play continues. They have more leverage now because he already has to play another season to hit FA.

He's not going to turn down some fair multi-year deal from us knowing that one injury this season cuts his worth heading into FA. Players want long term security.

Wouldn't pay any attention to him though. That Malik Jackson deal isn't anywhere close to what Williams will get.

Franchise tag.

no way - he'd get the money of an elite interior pass rusher and that's way too expensive even for one of the best nose tackles in the league

what happen if Tucker doesn't get a multiyear contract? Next season again with the franchise tag or to free agency ( :( ) ?

Tomorrow is the last day

There are a 1001 players out there. Who better to judge than A veteran GM? We can say all we want but Ozzie makes that decision.  Personally I want Tucker to stay.

Well, the Tucker situation has been taken care of for a number of years now and I am happy with the outcome. I think he will continue to be one of the best kickers in the game.

Now onto Williams. He is very valuable to us because he does everything we need him to do in our system. He would have to find another team that runs a similar style defensive scheme to ours in order for him to be more than a two down run stuffer. Right now his value isn't as high as some would think because the one weakness in his game is that he doesn't get the sexy sack numbers. That could change though because if you watched him throughout his career he does get his fair share of hurries and times when he's just a step or two away from planting a QB into the turf. If he turned in a season where he would get a half dozen sacks or more then he becomes a complete player.

Maybe a good comp to him would be Vince Wilfork. He did a lot of the dirty work for the Patriots for a long, long time but he personally never got high sack numbers. The most Wilfork made in any single season was $6.5 million, BUT he did get a hefty $18 million signing bonus from the Patriots while they kept his base salary very low. He most recently signed a 2 year $9 million contract with the Texans. Of course this is at the tail end of his career and he's not quite the same player he was in his prime. Williams is still in his prime and the economics of football are a bit different now.

The Ravens have to figure out if they want him or if they NEED him. He might be more valuable to the Ravens than any other team in the league. They can afford him if they need to keep him. How easily can you replace him? There is nobody else currently on the roster that looks like the same player he is. Maybe they will take some time to evaluate the younger guys they just drafted and see if Henry or Carl Davis start to show signs they are ready.

My gut feeling is that he's going to be a Raven for several more years to come. Without him dominating the LOS like he does this team becomes very suspect against the run and might once again be suspect to the passing game. He eats up blocks to free our other rushers. You have to account for him. At times you have to double team him. I don't know if there is another player that has earned that respect from defenses other than perhaps Jernigan, but he's not the same run game mauler.
