[News] The Competition 2016: Tight End

23 posts in this topic

I don't know if there is going to be a real clear #1 tight end. I think we will see a lot of 2 and 3 tight end sets and I see the snaps being evenly distributed.

No excuses this year for not scoring in the red zone. When you have 4 tight ends who are all good with the ball in their hands that, in theory, should create mismatches.

Well, there is no Waller and no Boyle which means the decision falls to Watson, Williams, Pitta and Gillmore. If Pitta doesn't make it through training camp then the decision is made. If he does, then there is no harm in keeping 4 tight ends, a week before Wallers suspension, people were talking about keeping 5 tight ends. I would like to add that they should be looking at Brandon Williams for some heavy blocking and a sneaky pass or run to him every now and then close to the goal line. Williams is far more athletic than Ngata was and I could see Williams doing one of his dances after he scores. Granted, his dance isn't what makes him a viable TE sub close to the goal line, but his athleticism and his hands make it viable decision. Harbaugh has a tendency to be a bit vanilla, so I hope Trestman feels comfortable enough we see a little something that might confuse an opponent.

WOuld love to see Trestmen start to implement some 2 TE sets, especially in short yardage and goal line situations. We could create a great deal of mismatches and with some of those big bodies TEs run the ball when we need to! Play to our strength a little!

Not so sure they cut Boyle. He did play better than second round Max Williams, and he is cheap. Think it's time to move on from Pitta. I know he is a great player, but it's time to let the younger ones a shot.

We should keep all 4 TE's if they're all healthy at the end of camp.  The chances that all 4 TE's, plus Waller, are healthy by the end of week 10 are pretty slim, so I'd guess that Boyle is safe (especially because he's a valuable blocker and STer).

Don't know if Waller and Boyle are smart enough to stay in the mix. Good news for them is that they can hang in the background just in case somebody goes down.

You want to keep Boyle who can't stay out of trouble but move on from PItta? Doesn't he deserve a chance to make the team? What if he turns out to be the best of the group? Patience is a virtue.

Boyle blocked well and surprised me with his hands but if he fails another test... he'll be suspended a full season, right?

Pitta's injury history versus Boyle's substance useage.... I'd pick pitta but it might be more about what the team is looking for.

Maxx is a receiving threat, Gilmore can block & catch so does the FO want the third to catch great, block great, or do both?

"Perhaps the deepest tight end group in the league," huh? NE has the deepest, with JUST Gronk! Watson may be the only guy left standing at the end of camp. Already two down, four to go.

I don't think you quite know what "deepest" means if you say they have the deepest group with JUST Gronk lol.  Deepest implies depth, not talent at the top of the depth chart.

The Ravens tight end position is the least of Ravens worries this year. Ravens have a team that's full of head cases right now. Joe, Suggs Pitta, Steve, Justine, Crockett, Zuttah and Jimmy Smith. You all seen how Smith played last year.

With NE using Gronk and Bennett we have to use our TE's in the same format and hold the best players no matter what. If we can elevate ourselves to the 014 team status and enter playoffs then stacking the team for offense is my preference.

Are you referring to the missed assignments and TD's allowed? The entire secondary should be included in that parameter

You are right. However, the system NE uses allows Gronk to be formidable. He has more opportunities than any other TE in the league. He is a match up nightmare.

For the TE squad I think Waller and Boyle are on the outside looking in. Watson will be to us like Bennett is to NE. Durable successful players are what make a championship team.

Watson's deal for 8mil is a bargain. Overall, in sports, the most ludicrous deal was 75 mil for FA Alan Crabbe from Portland to the Nets. Crabbe was a bench player the year before. Watson will be very important as the season starts.

Watson, Crockett and Max will be on this team. Waller a long shot and will stand behind Pitta if Dennis can make through spring training. Boyle will go on waivers and if cleared may make the PS.
