[News] The Competition 2016: Cornerbacks

Jimmy Smith is clearly going to start at one cornerback spot, but the spot opposite him is up for grabs. The Ravens also have several players fighting for the last few roster spots.

Nothing improves cornerback play like a strong pass rush. Let's hope we see the in shape and motivated Suggs in camp... not the other one.

I don't think Arrington makes the cut.  If they go w/ 6 CBs, I would have to say;

J. Smith, Wright, Powers, W. Davis, Canady and Young.

100% Agree.  Davis is more versatile, younger and cheaper.

Smith and Wright take the outside,  Powers and Davis back up on the outside, Powers takes the slot/nickel, Young takes Nickel/Dime and Canady is a ST player (maybe a weekly inactive).  Arrington played alright at nickel last year, but I feel better with Powers and Davis there, with Young stepping in as well.

At this point, I'd say Price has a better shot at making the team than Arrington does.

I agree that we will go with 6 corners this year with Smith/Wright the starters on the outside, Davis as the main cover and Powers the 4th outside corner. The only reason I have put Powers as 4th corner is because will be the starting slot and will only have the rookie Young behind him. Canady as the 6th corner will need to make special teams to be active on match days.

I think the guy starting opposite J. Smith is not on the team yet. These young guy may need time to grow. Hopefully Ravens can get a vet to add proven experience to this group. I am not that sold on Wright and Arrington . I think Chargers had a worst pass defense than Ravens so adding Weddle as a starter may not be enough alone.

Personally I think Wright is going to have a great year opposite of Jimmy. He got thrown into action last year and while he struggled as every true football fan knew he would, he owned up to it and ended the season doing great for us. Having an entire offseason to practice and gain chemistry with the team will only improve where he left off last year. Weddle wont be Reed by any means but he will be a lot better than what we have had since..

Pretty scary bunch actually. Only two proven starters out of that group and one of which sat on the market a while. Any injury to Jimmy Smith and the Ravens are screwed. Price you pay when you need an Offensive tackle and no good corners fall to the second round.

i hope at least one or two 6'1 CBs make it, i like big CB's....excluding J.Smith of course as he is a starter...

I think we keep 6 CB's:
1. Jimmy Smith
2. Shareece Wright
3. Will Davis
4. Jerraud Powers
5. Tavon Young
6. Maurice Canaday

To me Kyle Arrington is the biggest question mark. I really don't see either Young or Canaday hitting the PS which would leave Arrington out. If Canaday would go on PS (which I don't think will happen) then Arrington will be # 6.

The only other way that Arrington makes it is an injury to any of the six mentioned above. I think Arrington is talented and can play in this league and I would hate to see him go. I would love to keep 7 but IDK if that is realistic.

Finally I think it is still a possibility that we sign another outside CB (and maybe should) and if that's the case... it may mean that Canaday ends up on PS - but IDK... I think Canaday has a very high ceiling.

It will be interesting but a good problem to have!

I agree with the list but if Will Davis doesn't come back to form I wouldn't be surprised if Sheldon Price challenged him for the roster spot. He was starting opposite of Shareece so far with Jimmy Smith out. Coaches seem to like what they have seen out of him so far. He is also 6'2 that gives the secondary the height advantage.

We're going to find out a lot more after pre season games. There is a long time left to go between now and the first game of the regular season. Injuries can happen and that will have huge implications if any occur.

Several things to consider when it comes to Canaday. The first thing to think about is that his evaluation so far has been in practice time, with no pads, and against the second and third team offenses. He's not defending passes from Flacco or Mallett. He's defending passes from the Johnsons (Jerrod and Josh), both of which will probably never see time on the active roster and one of which will definitely be cut.

He's not covering the top talent on our roster. He's covering the lower tier and camp body guys right now. So it is great that he's performing well you have to take it with a grain of salt. Obviously this is better than hearing that he's been getting schooled out there.

He was also taken in the 6th round in a draft that wasn't deep in talent at the CB position. If he's not good enough to get a 53 man roster spot and he gets cut so be it. Another team has got to decide that he's better than what they have in house already and roster spots are at a premium. If he doesn't look too good in pre season games I am sure Canaday will be able to be stashed on the practice squad.

So far I think Pees has talked about Canady more than anyone.. Yes it is early but that is a good sign. And to go with that Tavon Young also is going against back ups and he hasn't generated nearly as much applause as Canady...

You also have to consider how these comments from Pees were obtained and in what context. I would think that Young is going against the ones and twos, not the twos and threes.

The way the article about Canaday was written it looks like Pees might have been asked who was the most impressive ROOKIE in camp. The answer comes as "high on the list" included Canaday. Which means other guys were as impressive or more impressive.

All will be revealed in game time evaluation.

If you listened to his entire press conference he talked about how Canaday was the cornerback that made the most plays besides Jerraud Powers. Tavon Young is playing the same competition as Canaday, as Wright, Price, and Powers. You can watch the entire conference on this website in the videos.

"He is one of the team’s top defenders and most important players" That's not saying much.
28. Baltimore Ravens
Top CBs: Jimmy Smith, Shareece Wright, Kyle Arrington
Key stat: Smith surrendered six touchdowns last season, a career-high.
In the first four seasons of his career, Jimmy Smith surrendered only six touchdowns, a figure he matched during a disappointing 2015 season that also featured a career-high 10 missed tackles. A return to his fine form of late 2013 and 2014 (before injury cut his breakout season short) would be a boost for a Ravens’ secondary that is relying on veterans like Shareece Wright, Kyle Arrington, and Jerraud Powers to produce at levels that they have only shown sparingly.

The answer is both will probably start during the season, Wright will start day 1 but as Davis gets back from his injury he will take over the no 2 spot ... Arrington was just plain awful last year and wont make this roster ..

The only reason why I wont rule out Kyle Arrignton just yet is because of a guy named Darian Stewart. Remember him? He was silent while with us, then the broncos signed him and he was Ed Reed reincarnated.

So lets hope Arrington is reincarnated into Chris McCallister or something this season. Although his personalty says otherwise. No offense but he doesn't have the tenacity of McCallister

Downing drinking the purple kool-aid with Mink- Love it!

CB Fact: The Ravens haven’t drafted a CB in the first three rounds since they took Jimmy Smith 27th overall out of Colorado in 2011. The Ravens have drafted 47 players since 2012 and only four have been cornerbacks. Three of those are no longer on the roster.

Ozzie has amnesia on draft day when it comes to the CB position. We won't be making playoffs this year folks and maybe not in 2018. We are definitely in a downward spiral right now.

I'm sick of having quantity over quality- who cares if we have ten 4th round comp picks- I'd rather us get a stud in the first couple of rounds and not trade back and get projects.

Darian Stewart is nothing like Ed Reed... He benefitted by having one of the best safeties on the opposite side of him, the best cornerback trio in the league, and one of the best pass rushes in the league.

Darian Stewart is a middle of the pack SS

Our secondary was first in the league the second half of the season. Furthermore:

1) jimmy was still recovering from the foot injury. Him at 100% will do wonders for the secondary

2) shareece was solid after the first game against the niners

3) Jerraud is a strong addition and will excel in the slot

4) Will Davis obviously tore his acl but looked to be a beast before he went down.

5) Tavon and Maurice are nothing to be thrilled about but reports are they are both progressing well and if anything will be solid depth and works in progress for next year.

6) The back end has drastically improved. People seem to almost be forgetting the addition of Weddle - and the move of Webb to safety has been tremendously underestimated.

Not to mention adding Leslie Frazier to the coaching staff. If that's not evidence of improvement i don't know what is. Just BC we didn't make some big sexy free agent splash or draft Ramsey doesn't mean we won't get better. We have gotten much better under the radar and people are going to be pleasantly surprised. I expect the entire defense to go back to playing the Baltimore football we know and love.

Actually you are kind of right. I remember our defense was ok, but our D-line could hardly get any pressure. Hopefully this season some of our young guys break out. And I'm really anxious to see how Suggs has carried himself this offseason.

Yeah suggs going down week one really killed us and caused a ripple effect throughout the entire defense. More double teams on doom- couldn't use zadarius like we had planned as a rotational please like mcphee and overall less pressure made things harder on the secondary. Guys were coming in  and out asnd having to learn the defense very quickly. A lot of the blame was put on pees which some was certainly valid but a little overblown and unfair. Which is why Ozzie was smart enough to realize he wasn't the problem and give him another shot but bring in somebody as a plan b if  things continue to go sideways (Frazier)  and take over the reigns. On the offense side of  ball it was something similar- perriman going down caused a ripple effect BC we had no contigerncy plan with someone to stretch the field. This effected the running game and we coylkdnt succusfully run the play action. We tried to bring in givins but at that point it was too late and he failed to live up to expectations and click with joe. That's why its important to have the qb and wrs go thru camp together and learn each others tendencies and develop a rapport. Just like pees- trestman took a lot of heat which was entirely unfair consdidering the scraps he had to work with. Despite some questionable play calling here and there he STILL did an incredible job. Now that both trestman and pees are both sticking around we will actually have some continuity for once and I expect the entire team to rebound well. We also have contingency plans in place this time on both sides of the ball. A rackload of pass rushers- 3 guys to stretch the feild ( perriman, Wallace, moore)  4 beast tight ends - Frazier ready to step in if peas continues to screw the pooch -and even a strong armed backup qb if Joe goes down who doesn't throw nothing but duck farts and pick 6s. We have strong depth all around and were ready for battle. We will show these fools that last year was an abberation.
