[News] Will Eric Weddle Or C.J. Mosley Wear Defensive Headset?

26 posts in this topic

Sounds like Wettle is a much stronger person that we had previously assumed - if he can defer to CJ "Because CJ is in the middle of things..."

Don't think that his decision to elevate CJ will go unnoticed by the rest of the team!

Class act that one.!

We have 2 guys who have experience at calling the plays on the defensive side of the ball that's a nice situation to be in.

In fact, we have even more. I'm sure Webb, Suggs and Dumervil could also do the job - although its rare to give the headset to outside guys like Suggs or Dumervil - it's better to have the headset in the middle.

If we have to choose between Mosley and Weddle - well, it's a tough - although pleasant - choice. Weddle has the definite edge in experience and proven leadership, but Mosley knows the D squad better...

Couldn't we have a constant conference call between the two? :D

Is it age before beauty, or beard, or is it experience before youth.

WEDDLE  is a no brainer here, has seen more snaps, studies more film, has seen more tendencies and deception, and can see the whole field.

cuz Weddle wore it a lot more years. I don't think Weddle needs the coaches telling him where every one is suppose to be.

Why does this really matter? If Mosley has worn it for the last 2 yrs, why would you change it?

Because its the off-season and we need to talk about something.

Its not really about the coach telling him where everyone should be same. It's more so about who the coaches feel is the right guy to be giving calls on the field and transferring info . Intelligence, being adaptive, and discipline also plays a factor. For a good 15 years we had Ray Lewis.

On one hand, I don't want to see another 4th & 29, so I would like Mosley to wear it. But on the other hand I'd like to see our defense play a lot better than they have the past few years. So idk

Weddle will still be able to give input and project his influence with our without the headset. It makes sense to let C.J. continue to rock it, especially since he has been moving along progressively the past few years.

Did anyone catch the Kudos to the Ravens defense on CNN today? Hines Ward is their new sports reporter. He was reporting on the Army Golden Knights. He jumped out a plane with them. When asked how it felt, he indicated that that it was even scarier than playing the Ravens. Second place to jumping out of an airplane is not too shabby.

No brainier! C.J. Is the heir apparent on the defense. Weddle is the leader in the secondary. The way the organization sees it, C.J. will lead this defense long after Weddle is retired.

If anyone had been paying attention, the defense needs two captains, one at the line of scrimmage, and one to set up the defensive backfield. We had that with Ray and Ed, no matter who wore the helmet. C.J. has not proven he can "lead the defense". I like the guy and hope that he gets there, but he is not there yet. Let him wear the helmet, but Weddle, not Mosley, should manage the secondary.

Don't really care who wears communication devices. More interested in Mosley getting better in coverage and being a top3 lb and Weddle squeezing out a pro bowl caliber year at 31. If those things happen ravens defense will be be at least good. Mosley has the athleticism, speed, power and instincts to excel in coverage. It is a matter of him performing. He needs to outperform telvin smith who I wanted the ravens to draft and find a tandem in one draft. I knew telvin would be comparable to Mosley but not outperform him. A round5 player at same position outperforming Mosley looks bad!! Mosley has the athleticism explosion and instincts to cover and do everything else as good as telvin but hit with far more authority than telvin can. It is a matter of him doing so. More interested in that than Mosley wearing communications devices. And Weddle playing like his best.

It's way too early to compare the careers of Mosley & Smith. 5th Round pick LB Zack Thomas (Defensive Rookie of the Year) outperformed 1st Round pick LB Ray Lewis in his rookie year - how'd that turn out? And you are also comparing 2 different positions. Mosley plays MLB in a 3-4 defense whereas Telvin plays OLB in a 4-3. Telvin is too small to play LB in a 3-4 defense - he's more of a Safety anyway (which is why he is better in coverage) much like Deone Bucannon or Mark Baron.

His weight at the combine was that of a big safety. However he was a lb. It is not like he is a safety convert. He has a bigger bod than bucannon but very lean. He is just good in coverage. And he could play lb in a 3-4. He is doing everything 245lb lbs do taking on and beating blocks. He may be 230 lbs but he plays big.

How can a guy like Weddle, who played of a defense worst than the Ravens, walk in a just take a leadership role? That's the biggest difference in this Ravens team these days. There are no Dogs, alpha males, or guys with swagger on defense. The Webb's, J Smith immediately deferred to Weddle's leadership. Chargers did not have a great defense so this hype like Weddle going to turn things around concerns me. Harbs got rid of the younger hungrier dogs and have a bunch of guys that follow the first vet that walks in the door without proving anything wearing Purple and Black.

Another nice fluff piece for Weddle. To answer the question; "who wears the headset?" Lets just go with a guy that has at least played a down for the team he is wearing it for..... i'm really not sold on Weddle at all.
