He was asked to bulk up to play TE, wouldnt be surprised if he was popped for PEDs.

It was substance abuse.

This means it was his 3rd positive test since he got the 4 games. Do guys not learn?

In other news, I just read a report that Daniel Brown put on 30 lbs of muscle in his transition to TE this offseason ???

Waller needed the exact opposite of this suspension to happen.

The sad part is Waller did find a niche on the team, as he was a pretty good special teams player. But now I wouldn't be surprised if he got cut.

That's too bad. Wasn't really excited for him as a TE, but he's a stud on special teams. Wonder if he's going to get cut now. There's a logjam at both offensive positions he could play.

This cost him 1/4 of this year's pay, so over $100,000 off the top.  Then there's a very good chance he'll never see a regular season game again with any team because of this, which potentially costs him millions.  I can't understand how someone would make that choice under those circumstances.  I was really rooting for the guy.  What a disappointment.

This is one reason I think very little of the 53 man roster guesses at this point in the off season.  Injuries or addiction/stupidity (not sure which in Waller's case) will, unfortunately, trim people right on out of it.

On a soapbox-esqe topic, I do wish the NFL would move on from suspending players for recreational drugs, unless there is a crime (DUI, etc.) involved.  Hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars for something that has no effect on game day is crazy, in my opinion.  Not excusing Waller though.  The only thing more stupid than the policy is throwing one's career away while knowing the policy.

Actually this might help his chances. Ravens can hold his rights for 4 weeks without putting him on the roster or PS.

Thats 4 weeks where someone could get injured and a spot could open up for him.

Or, at the very least, makes it almost a sure thing he would clear waivers if they wanted to keep him on the PS.

I don't know that it spells the end -- they did stand by Boyle after his 4 game suspension.

something I haven't thought about... Since it mentioned Waller can still practice and play in the preseason - does that mean Boyle is doing the same? Haven't heard as much as a peep about him and never thought to wonder if he's even practicing. I would imagine the same rules would apply.

Yes this means they both do not count against the 53 man roster until they are able to play. So in this case it actually may benefit the Ravens if in the first four weeks a tight end or wide receiver gets injured and they need depth at the position. If he didn't get suspended and got cut another team had a chance to sign him.

So if the Ravens still want to give him a chance after this incident this actually probably gives him a better chance at making the roster. Stil stupid thing to do and costed him a lot of money in the long run... But that may help the Ravens roster situation for a few weeks.

Can we please drop some loads off of these fringe players with 'potential upsides'???

We have so many players that we know will do didly squat.  I want some major flash in training camp.  Bring in another guy from diff camp that fits us.

Well reasoned post. You covered all the variables in a mature manner.  In the end however stupid the policy and organizations response to it, the player's stupidity is primary because the policy is still in effect.

Substance abuse? Well that is dumb. I would at least understand if it was some PED because of his transition in a short time to TE, but this? Just dumb and foolish. Hopefully he learns from this because he seemed like a good kid.

Eh, since he doesn't count to the roster for the first 4 weeks he may have bought himself a little more time.

Still, if he doesn't perform well during this TC/PS time, what's the point of keeping him?

While that's true, I was more looking at it as Daniel Brown now having the opportunity to make Waller irrelevant.  If Brown goes on the PS for 4 weeks and does decent between now and then, there might not even be a spot for Waller there when he's eligible to return.
