[News] Late For Work 6/30: Media From AFC North Rivals Say Ravens Won't Make Playoffs

65 posts in this topic

I like it better when everyone "has negative reviews" on us and our chances. We were the early season darlings last year and look how that ended up. I know that what these guys say has little to do with what happens on the field, but for my money I'll take them bad mouthing us 25/8.

When people consider us a shoo-in to win, we usually have disappointment. When we're counted out, we usually contend. I'll take the shade from the national media every season - fuel to the fire.

Football cant come soon enough.

Last year was a PERFECT example of that.  Many had us going deep into the playoffs.

We were also "projected" to do very well and make deep runs in 2011 and 2012 as well...

The media discredits the Ravens??  Well that's a new story!!

Well, remember, this is also the media in Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. What are the Browns' reporters going to say? "Looks like another year in which Baltimore, the city who stole our team, is going to the Superbowl, while the replacement Browns will have another 2-14 season."

Regardless of who we play the NFL always seems to put in a bad stretch for the Ravens. Maybe they should turn out the lights when they do the schedule...

Can someone please explain how Flacco makes 22.1 mil per year? It seems they are only going off his extension, which is 2019-2021. But does his salary #'s for the years leading up to that just disappear and not get factored in? Shouldn't it really be considered a new 6 year deal with the extension + remaining years from the last deal?

I never understood that last year since we opened with five out of seven away and mucho trips out west. I guess it is just more NFL noise.

Browns beat writer says we won't make the playoffs for two years in a row? Well Brownie writer - what in the world do you know about playoffs to pontificate about anybody's chances at making the playoff or not? Seriously?

It's ironical that our last great defense was in 2008. The last year of Rex Ryan. What happened to us? Where is that Baltimore defensive swagger? I miss it so much. Do something to get that swagger back Ozzie and Harbs! Not that you aren't trying, but it isn't happening.

Its mostly smoke and mirrors. He's averaging $20.8M over the next six years. That's all that matters.

I find it very hard to believe that grown up and sensible men are making serious predictions about the regular season NOW. Anyone who can't see how absurd it is, just take a look at the predictions on the Ravens' 2015 season from a year ago...

Well... if there's a beat writer who should be excellent at spotting the signs that a team won't make the playoffs, it's the Browns beat writer ;)

All that really matters is the guaranteed money - $89 million. Flacco's was only $44 million. That's the amount the money the team is on the hook for if he sucks (or gets injured) and they have to cut him.....

Being doubted is the Norm, and this team has always been good with that.....This team thrives on it....

Well, the $89M isn't the "real" guaranteed money either, since a lot of that is guaranteed for injury only. The "real" guaranteed money for Luck is $44M... $32M signing bonus and first year salary of $12M.

The rest of the "guarantees" are roster bonuses that the Colts technically don't have to pay if he sucks (only have to pay him if hes injured).

Basically if Luck goes out and murders somebody this year, the Colts could cut him prior to the 5th league day of 2017 and only have to pay him a total of $44M (what they paid him in 2016). They wouldn't owe him another dime.

In the realistic world, all that matters is how much you get in the first three years, because after three years, it becomes "beneficial" for a team to cut a player who isn't performing from a salary cap perspective.

Luck's contract is actually structured quite well. Its one of the few big deals I've seen where the Colts could actually achieve cap savings by cutting him in year 3 ($5.2M in cap savings with $19.2M in dead money).

Bottom line is what team wouldn't pay a QB Flacco money for 3 AFCCG, 1 SB win, Most playoff road wins, and only missing the playoffs twice in his career???? Haters gonna hate....

ironic:
containing or exemplifying irony
ironical
coincidental; unexpected

ironical:
pertaining to, of the nature of, exhibiting, or characterized by irony or mockery
using or prone to irony

I suppose it was a little too English.. my apology.

I understand what you are saying. No one could have predicted all of those injuries. So to predict what a team is going to do now is only a guess with many question marks. i just think maybe they have nothing else to write about.

Yup just looked it up and you are correct sir. My bad it sounded off, but it seems like they are interchangeable in this instance.

Too funny!  And true! They took the word "playoffs" out of the Cleveland dictionary.  :P

That cracked me up! Good one ;)

I am one that highly criticized the NFL the past two seasons over the raw deal they handed the Ravens. Frankly I was right because it was so unfair what was done. This year it's a tough schedule but I'm not complaining because when you have a tough schedule to end the season then it gives you the best opportunity to walk into the playoffs full power. If we fail those last few weeks then we're out. But in no scenario should we start the season with a loosing record.

Well I mean people can't complain about the schedule in terms of opponents or location, because those are largely set years in advance.

So the only real complaints fans have is when the games are scheduled. Frankly, to me, its largely irrelevant, and I'll never really bash the NFL for scheduling because they have to manage 32 NFL teams at the exact same time.

Plus, lets be honest... 32 NFL teams think their schedule is unfair 100% of the time. Most of the time, they are wrong.

Well there you go extremely valuable reasoning indeed! So, he must have really well honed skills then especially if all you must do is ascertain the qualities of a team that won't make the playoffs vs ascertaining the qualities of a team that will!!:D
