[News] Terrence Brooks More Confident Entering Critical Training Camp

I always wanted Brooks to 'the guy', but that never materialized. I hope that he can show improvement in game situations and be our 4th safety. Given his ability to play a little corner, I see him as having more upside that Elam at this point.

I for one have a lot of faith in Brooks. He's a good tackler and he's probably the fastest safety we have, I think if he can stay healthy he'll have a good year. I reckon by mid year, he'll be the first backup to Webb and weddle.

Coming out of FSU Brooks was a developmental Safety. He's much more comfortable at CB. At FSU they just really asked him to play center field and use his speed to fly all over the field. He'd play down in the box at times and even cover. But being a true Safety wasn't really in the cards for Brooks, it was more like, hey TB, we have a ton of talented CBs, moving you to Safety allows us to put our best 5 DBs on the field at once.

So coming to the NFL and more importantly the Ravens it was a tough transition for Brooks because Pees ask a ton of his Safeties. The biggest problem for Brooks and even Elam for that matter is that they didn't have anyone to learn from at safety. Now you have a guy like Weddle, who Brooks' style of play really resembles imo, to show him the ropes.

If he can stay healthy, I think he'll have a really solid year and work his way to being that 3rd safety. Next year he'll be starting I think.

I've seen Brooks personify the definition of being lost on defending deep balls. The Saints game when he watched a bomb get hauled in for a TD. The Steelers game last year when he knocks out Antonio Brown a whole 3 seconds before the ball even gets there. Such poor ball skills, our secondary has been so lost the last 2 seasons specifically, I really can't stomach another season of pure incompetence.

As for Brooks, I'm echoing the sentiments I have on many players, I'll believe it when I see it. I remember one good play his rookie year when he made a big hit and caused a fumble, but I also remember being in Cincinnati watching Sanu burn him on a 4th down in the 4th quarter for the game winner setting us up for another loss in the same exact way with that team.

I think we'll carry 4 Safeties. Two free and two strong. We all know Weddle and Webb are the starters. I have Levine as our backup FS, because he is one of the best on Special Teams and can also play CB. That leaves 3 guys for one SS spot. I think Lewis will be cut. They will keep him as a camp body and an insurance policy in case there's an injury. But he's too slow and you can save over a million in cap space if you cut him. So it's either Elam or Brooks. You save more money if you cut Elam, and he's also in his last year where as Brooks has two left. Elam looked great in camp last year before he got hurt, and Brooks slowly regressed as the year went on. Basically it's a toss up. It will come down to training camp. Right now, I give it to Brooks, because of the business side of it.

In my opinion, a high ceiling player. There has been a disconnect between our secondary and the coaches for several years. Ed Reed and Graham were the last players to excel in our secondary. It has been a carousel of players in that secondary for years. It can't all be the players' fault. If you agree that Ozzie is a great talent evaluator, you have to somehow entertain the thought that some thing might not be right with either the scheme or the coaching or both.
That's why I am optimistic with Frazier's hire. I think Brooks is a vicious hitter. He plays fast and physical. I would like for him to flourish.

I think all the first, second and third year players in the secondary fro getting to play with Weddle. Unfortunately, even if they improve either Elam or Brooks is gone. I think they keep Weddle, Webb, Lewis and either Brooks or Elam at safety. IMO they will also keep 5-6 corners: Wright, Smith, and Powers are locks. Then the rest depends on how good Canady and Young look.

I'm pretty sure that was Lewis
