30 posts in this topic

Cornerback Jerraud Powers could have signed a multi-year contract with a couple teams but decided to gamble on himself and ink a one-year offer from the Ravens. The playmaker wants to prove that he’s a valuable utility cornerback by excelling at nickel.

I'm very excited about this signing as well as Eric Weddle. I f everyone stays healthy we could really be a top 10 secondary.

Easily. I believe we were ranked as a top 5 defense at the end of last season when we finally figured out how to work with all the injuries. Powers was an excellent signing, wish we could've gotten a couple years.

I just want to point out that Corey Graham could not get a starting spot on the Bears because they told him he was such a valuable special teams player that he would never get on the field defensively. Can you imagine? He came here and like the Ravens have a tendency to do, they give guys a chance to prove themselves and they give them the job if they earn it. Graham quickly showed that the Bears made a terrible mistake and after leaving here was able to ink some substantial contracts based on the chance that only the Ravens would give him. The NFL players, especially Jerraud, knows that the Ravens will give everyone a fair chance (if you stay out of the dog house) and if they prove they can do the job, they will get it. Competition competition competition and the best players get on the field. Cornerback, TE, WR, RB, all have incredible competition which means we are going to get some incredible players and plays this year.

That's great now freeze dry him and put him on a shelf until game time. We don't need him getting hurt.

Then Ravens hire Bear's coach. Go figure.

Powers had a couple of impressive interceptions while working against the first-team offense in minicamp. He jumped one out route and would have likely raced for a touchdown in a game. He made a diving end zone interception in red-zone drills another minicamp practice.

Minus Flacco.

That being said, if Smith comes back healthy, how can you not be excited about this revamped secondary??

I think our secondary is going to be exceptionally efficient this season and that is going to help our pass rush for sure. But, given the pass rush itself is retooled, I expect both units to be in the top 5 in the league.

As a fan, I am always optimistic about the team going into pre-season. The secondary is going to face some fierce passing attacks this year. On top of the two against Roethlisberger & Dalton, they face Brady and Romo. Those six games will tell us if this secondary upgrades have taken the team to the next level. If the pass rush improves as well, it will be a fun season to watch!

If this is our starting secondary, Smith, Wright, Powers, Webb, and Weddle,  J. Smith is the only player in our secondary

that started last season in the same position.  YIKES!!

About what I was thinking except the other way around... our pass rush will do wonders for our retooled secondary :D

Don't want him getting stale either.

Eight years in the league he should be to smart for that to happen.

I think Ozzie should've gave Powers a 2 year deal just in case he's performs well with the Ravens. Now if he's dominant with us this year than we can't afford him next season. 2 year deal would've been a insurance and smart move.

Powers only wanted a 1 year deal. This IMO is the genius of Ozzie. Sign a FA to a 1 year deal. If he sucks, you cut him and no big deal. If he plays good enough to get a big contract where we can't afford him, then we get a Comp pick - we get a good year from said player AND we get a draft pick. TE Owen Daniels helped get us to the play-offs AND got us Maurice Canady.

I think the pass rush is going to be the key to the season. Our offense was ranked 11th last year before Flacco went down, even though he was throwing to 3rd stringers and had no one to protect his blind side, so I'm very confident that the offense will be good, if not great this year. The secondary was very good in the second half of last season, and now they'll have a healthier Jimmy Smith and a bunch of additions. We always stop the run. The pass rush is a big unknown since we don't have any proven players in that area that aren't over 30 and we don't know if Suggs will regain his explosiveness at his age coming off an achilles tear. If the young guys can contribute and Suggs and Dumerville can return to form, we should have a great defense to match with an explosive offense, and we'll be right back to contending for a super bowl.

Good-bye, Kyle Arrington.

Personally I would keep Kyle around for another year with the amount of injuries we tend to have at that position, it would be foolish to cut a great depth player so early in the season.

The 2 new rookies, Young and Canady are supposedly looking good.  Might be hard pressed to keep Harrington when he can be replaced by cheaper rookies.

Agreed. As I mentioned in another thread... this could turn out to be a very good draft

he had several multiple deals on the table, but most likely didn't take them because it wasn't the amount he was looking for.  He's betting on his talent to be able to land a much more lucrative offer. IMO, he may not have signed a two year deal.

Practice is one thing. Live action..........that's a whole 'nother deal. Let's see how he does against AJ Green and Antonio Brown.

Still learning but green and brown are usually on the outside aren't they?

I'm sure they'll figure out who the weak link is and go after him. If you ask me, there's a lot of those on the Ravens secondary.

If our pass rush steps up and guys stay healthy... our secondary should be fine

I think many see it your way.  I know both Newsome and DeCosta see it your way.  In fact, DeCosta has created a new Managerial Stats Category.  I refer to it as "The DeCosta Code".  Its a situation where you let a player walk that you didn't deem significant enough to keep and when a needy team picks him up, your Front Office want's credit for it because someone else valued that player more than your team did.  Usually its' with Draft Selections not given a second contract, but they'll want a "Kaching" for a Free  Agent transfer as well.

However......a compensatory pick is a bit of an unknown for having let a decent player walk don't you think?  First your Front Office has to draft someone in lower rounds that will show something.  I'm not gonna beat up on Maurice Canady, but he didn't have a pick last year. What did Owen Daniels do?.........anyone remember?  How many games did he play?  Now this year we had to give Ben Watson 4 big ones because our F.O. felt we were light on T.E.'s with six on the roster, granting a couple have issues currently. Bit ironic?

Yes, many here believe in the omniscience of Oz. It's a bit of smoke and mirrors at this time however.

I want to say something as I write and pray for Newsome to depart by the end of this year.  When Newsome was 40 years old, he essentially took control of our Drafts.  To my knowledge, no G.M. won a Championship as quickly as Newsome.  His early moves were incredible. The Jags were very, very close under Coughlin, but Newsome gets full credit for our remarkable  start.  He made some mistakes, but from 2002 to 2010 he made solid selections to get us back to the Championship.  Then it all fell apart. He is sixty now and it's time for him to be enshrined in the Ring of Honor.  His current failures will not diminish his accomplishments, but it is time to pass the torch to the next Decision Maker to carry the Ravens into the future.
