OLD SCHOOL SMASH BALL

Now that we are here, What should the Ravens Top Priorities be Going Forward?

14 posts in this topic

Lets hear it. Its now the 2016 season, the draft is over, you have had a couple camps, kinda see what you have going forward, based on health, etc, a couple of question marks, but:

What new schemes should be devised, what improvements do we make anywhere, what is still broken, what should our top priorities be, and what should we be focusing on to right this ship....5-11 still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, has a certain odor to it, we have some unfinished business here, so lets hear your thoughts

You can never have too much offensive line depth. Your franchise quarterback is coming off acl and mcl injuries and you have young receivers that need to learn to get separation. You also need to run the ball better than last season. If you can upgrade the offensive line at all that would be my priority. I know we have a bunch of young guys with upside but Jensen, Urschel, Stanley, and Lewis are all still very questionable as they are young in the league. Losing Monroe was a key player at tackle for years who was solid and they need to make sure Stanley and Lewis are both ready for the task. Wagner is coming off an injured season and did not perform the best. If you can upgrade there if a free agent drops you take them in a heart beat.

Other than that possibly outside linebacker. Suggs and Dumervil are aging and no one beneath them on the depth chart has too much experience. If you can bring in a veteran pass rusher for depth such as Dwight Freeney if possible who can rush the passer. Yes I know at this point in his career he is just a sack artist but you know he can get to the quarterback which is what the team may need in their pocket if Suggs and Dumervil struggle to get back as fast as expected.

Lots of improvement all around except maybe ILB.  Lots of weapons for Joe.  We could go deep or use short passes to our TEs who I think will be one of the best groups in the league with or without Pitta.  Running game should be better with the addition of Dixon who a lot of people considered the second best RB in the draft behind Elliott and also considered to be close in talent.  Our secondary seems improved even after finishing strong the last half of the season especially with Weddle and Powers now on the team.  Pass rush has a lot of potential especially with Doom and Suggs coming back.  My thoughts concerning unfinished business?  Let's blow the competition out of the water.

agree building the oline. Yanda should have one more all pro year in him. I like Jensen and Urschels potential to be top10 at   guard and center. I'm not to crazy about Alex lewis. Would liked to have traded next year's round1 and round 3 picks for a round2,3 and 4 this draft. Being this draft was deep with players with round1 traits. Oline player would be one of the positions the picks used on. Which brings me to the what the ravens should prioritize. My opinion is a commitment to young talent!! From draft , free agency and trades. Trust drafting and player evaluations. Trust the better scouts regardless of where he is in the pecking order. Do not be hesitant to trade for players with breakout potential on teams that do not surround players with tools to perform to optimal potential. Stop going to the well so many times with aging vets and begin trusting the scouting, drafting, coaching and performance trainers. McKinney was a shining example. Draft replacements for great players before he retires or becomes liability. As opposed to riding a player til he announces his retirement or becomes a clear liability and caught with a void then reach for a player in the draft. Harbs begged SS to return. That is fine and totally cool. However at 37 coming off an Achilles injury I would prefer to of drafted an extra wr in round4 like Malcolm Mitchell or Demarcus Robinson and if SS plays like he did last season to treat it like a bonus.

As for the drafting I would like to see the ravens make moves for rare talents at the right time. And trade down and stock up on BPA's at the correct time. As opposed to counting on 35 yr old players with no thought of his replacement. When it comes to drafting it would be cool for management to draft for talent and not treat every character flaw the same. And realize teenagers do stupid things and identify the difference in a teenager doing something immature and and a true nutcase or thug.  To put it bluntly, ravens management needs to place priority on young players with best football on its way. go back to bpa and just stockpiling very good and great players and show confidence in drafting and maturing young players.

OL depth, LT and C specifically. Trim the roster down by cutting bad weight like bum rb's who showed potential in 1 game as a rookie(ahem LT, maybe Terrence west). Coach some damn wrs for once.

For defense we need to start tailoring the scheme better, put correa in an under front where he could be elite, put Kaufusi at 5t, same with zds, stop forcing guys into uncomfortable roles and let our talents use their talent.

West and Pitta are both guys that I see being questionable at making the 53 man roster. Not sure if the Ravens need 4 running backs and a full back. Not sure if the Ravens need 4 tight ends.

I agree I don't know where they have plans for Kaufusi with him having that back injury but Za'Darius I think can do some good damage as a defensive end rather than an OLB like Upshaw. Seems like they are putting Correa everywhere to see where he sticks.

I laughed at coaching wide receivers. We all know that doesn't happen... I'm actually surprised Aiken has produced this much in his career. Everyone else has less than to be desired at production.

I think the top priority is getting Flacco 100% healthy and in sync with his receivers.  Admittingly he has barely

thrown the ball while recovering.  He has a bunch of new receivers he needs to adjust to and timing is key.

Flacco stated he will start throwing to  receivers between now and TC to get his arm ready.

On that note, another priority is getting Mallet up to speed.  Sounds like he had a mediocre mini-camp.

If for whatever reason Joe is not where he needs to be for the 1st game, Mallet needs to be ready to take the helm.

You bring up an excellent point. We could do a much better job of developing our schemes to take advantage of the specific skills of our players.

What do you guys want to see out of Joe? I wonder if he will wear a brace? Any info, inside skinny on that?

Joe mentioned that wearing a brace would help make him feel more comfortable with the mental component of the game.

Sucks for Joe. I guess we'll have to live with losing his insane speed for safety and piece of mind ;)
