[News] Late For Work 6/16: A Look At Steve Smith's Hall Of Fame Resume

15 posts in this topic

I would have held Monroe until the final cuts. Just let him stay at home and chill out, work on his medical marijuana stuff and just stay healthy. Right now no one wanted to give up anything for him because they don't desperately need him now but lose a tackle or two during minicamp or training camp and all of a sudden there may be two or three teams in a bidding war for him. I don't get why we cut him loose so early. Are we going to find a superstar sitting at home that we could use that 90th spot on? Sometimes I wonder about our FO and some of the decisions they make. If they felt having Monroe there would be a bad influence then make him stay at home. If they felt he was going to hurt himself, wrap him in bubble wrap while he is at the facility. Maybe they just wanted to move on from him, but why invest all that money we already invested in him to help him out and let him go find another team. All he has done is bash the Ravens so I would have let him sit until someone wanted him or we needed to cut down to 53. Other than that, his butt would be riding an exercise bike until late August.

If they did what you propose, what do you believe the motivation of Monroe would be to come play hard if called upon? I don't think Ozzie is a guy that is going to penalize a player's livelihood and chance at getting an opportunity on another team despite how poorly Monroe conducted himself and I don't think his conduct was really detrimental to the team all that much. It was his production that was detrimental to the team because of availability. So he was released after making an attempt to trade him. I think it is a satisfactory outcome for both Monroe and the Ravens.

"An interesting note from the Daily News report is that the Giants would want Monroe to play right tackle. He has solely been a left tackle throughout his eight seasons in the NFL."

And that's why they are probably not gonna get him if either the chargers or the Seahawks - or a third organization - offers him LT money (as I don't think the Giants would hire him to man the right side for LT money...)

I myself thought he was to stay - but there may be things, important factors we don't know about, but Ozzie does... It sure seems a risky move to give the hardest position to a rookie with basically no fallback option (sorry, but Hurst doesn't seem like one...), meaning no margin for error (and hoping like hell Stanley won't get injured)...

But the decision was made by people wit the complete set of factors known to them - so we may just as well suppose this was the right decision.

Smith Sr. only needs 68 yards to reach 14,000 career yards. Not sure how his recovery is going, but 1068 (for 15,000 yards) could also be possible. Nine have eclipsed 14k and 5 are over 15k. Doable?

I see what Clifton Brown is saying with the triple effect, but Monroe was out so much I don't see him not being here as much of a factor. I say that losing OC was the biggest "hit" the Ravens need to get past. I think focus should be on who will be next to Stanley, that in my opinion is going to be crucial.

Also, I think it would be fair now to say Yanda is HOF caliber. I wonder when calling him future HOF is appropriate? GO RAVENS! 25

"Monroe in no rush to sign" tells me all I need to know. He doesn't want to do this anymore It's obvious once he became a Dad and signed the new deal he's been coasting and football is way down the list. It also took him an awful long time to recover from his torn labrum.

SSSr. will end up with just over the 15,000 yards and certainly add more than 39 catches.

Last season, not even a full season, he had 46 receptions and 670 yards. That was only over 7 games.

As a rough estimate, assuming he can hit his stride again, that works out to 105 receptions and 1531 yards.

This would put his career totals at 1066 career receptions and 15,463 career receiving yards.

I think it is safe to say at that point he is the clear favorite for HoF, even over T.O. for one single reason. SSSr. has been balling out his entire career while T.O. only played lights out early in his career when he had the benefit of Jerry Rice around to pull defenders his way. Not knocking T.O. but he will be best remembered for his on field antics vs his play making, and that was his own doing. The back half of his career was a paparazzi parade not a highlights reel.

like seriously?

a lot of players say that.

its a pretty wise thing to say and do TBH.

only dumb players would rush and sign the very first offer they.
it only makes sense if its the only offer you get and even then if it dont feel right you can always wait to see if a team suffers an injury  orso.....

Monroe is gone. Time to move on. Everyone and their mother wanted us to draft a LT. We got the best one in the draft. Top 10 picks should be thrown into the fire. They are supposed to be elite.

Can Hurst play guard?. Herschel and Myers are not very good. Or go with an all rookie left side of the line? Yea, that'll be great. I hope Monroe doesn't go to another team and become a stud. But hey, if he does, good for him.

I read somewhere earlier that steve said hes liable to break the 14,000 yard and 1000 receptions milestone and walk away immediately. Knowing him I know he was probably joking but it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Seemed like a selfish thing to say . I've always wanted us to send him out on top but it would suck if he really felt this way and didn't care about helping the team get to the superbowl. If we're 2-9 and he's already reached his record would he really walk away before finishing the season out?

The Steve I thought I knew surely wouldnt..maybe I'm looking too far into it.
