67 posts in this topic

I don't know about this it's risky to release him this early with not knowing Stanley can handle the spot week one.

The future starts now. Clearly the front office believes Ronnie is motivated enough to maximize his own potential without any clear competition.

Yeah, when he called out the Ravens FO I knew it would happen. Too much of a distraction.

Now he can talk about marijuana 24h a day. I couldn't care less.

This was the right move. He has not earned that starting salary here.
add in the Marijuana advocacy and I think he is likely to end up with a suspension this year if not injured. the suspension will be for Banned substances.

This does not surprise me either, he has not been a reliable O lineman for the last 2 years, but I do hope Ronnie Stanley will be ready to go come September ?

He was actually not bad - according to the stats - when he was on the field. The problem was that it wasn't often enough...

From what i have heard, Lewis could be a legit backup, and IMO has a shot at the starting LG spot.....

hopefully we have a reliable backup in place when the season starts

This development seems to suggest that.

possibly or they could pounce on a veteran that gets cut in training camp. we shall see how it all unfolds

Risky move... reminds me of when we dumped "Q" and came to bitterly regret it.

Agree. And its one they have never recovered from.

Vastly different production history from those two guys. We dumped Q right after he took Joe and company to the promise land. Monroe hasn't done anything even close to that. The only thing we're going to regret is extending him his contract in the first place.

every pick, and every signing is a risk, and we took the risk with Monroe, and he has been injured for a better part of his short stay in Baltimore, and we certainly haven't gotten our monies worth with him, so who better to replace him than the #6 pick in the draft......Top 10 picks are supposed to be plug and play players, so FO got more cap space by this move, that will allow us to be creative for the rest of the season, if injuries hit us again....and get some extensions done....

Actually, there's nothing in common about the two scenarios. Not a single thing.

What surprises me is that a trade couldn't be worked out. I mean, seriously, what could the Giants have been offering which was less valuable than cutting him outright and getting nothing? Doesn't seem to make much sense.

The talks broke down because Monroe wouldn't agree to a new contract

It is a shame we couldn't get at least a little something for him. In the end, it is hard to trade well compensated veterans with a shaky track record.

Pushing all chips in on Stanley.

What we did get was a bundle of dead money against our salary cap.  I might have opted to keep him around for the season even if he was a backup just for depth.  In the end, we will see how Stanley handles being the starter for the next 4 + years.

Well the only reason the Ravens released Monroe was they weren't convinced he would want to play an entire season without feigning injury. This is my opinion only. Also, his off season activity was a huge distraction as well to the team. When a player's distractions outweigh his potential value and production to the team, that player is typically cut, released or traded. Since nobody wanted to trade for Monroe, the only option left was to release him. I'm willing to bet he'll clear waivers and the Giants will claim him off waivers and sign him to a veteran minimum deal.

There's absolutely no reason to keep Monroe, better to eat the money now than later. If we were to release him next year we would still have dead money in 2017 and then in 2018.

Having the 3rd largest cap hit on your team be a backup severely hurts the team, and hurts it in the long run. By creating more cap space now the Ravens have the ammunition to go out and aggressively pursue any quality veterans that may (some definitely will be as they are every year) be cut this off-season.

We have several positions that are very deep. Cutting players that have no future with the team creates more room for others that can contribute. Dumping Monroe likely means we'll be able to keep another WR, maybe both Campanaro and Reynolds as opposed to one or the other. Or we'll be able to hold onto another DB for depth.

The point being that Monroe will not only not contribute to the team in any way on the bench but he'll hurt it by eating up a roster spot and a lot of money that could go toward a quality veteran that likely will be released sometime before the season.

How does this move make us a better football team?

It doesn't. Although we don't know all details. Have to trust the FO I guess.

The Ravens wanted him gone period. He either accepted a contract that was friendly to another team and in response that team would give the Ravens a draft pic. So this means that Monroe was not willing to lower his asking price enough to allow another team to take over that contract and still give up a draft pick. The Ravens were not gonna continue to hold onto him. Whatever they get for him was icing on the cake.

...not surprised if the trade talks did break down due to Monroe being inflexible with his contract because he was a problem earlier on in his career with us after we won the Superbowl. He didn't want to give us a hometown discount or anything...came up with some lame excuse why he wasn't gonna do it. Like somebody said, get rid of him now and free up a!roster spot for someone who's gonna contribute to the success of the team!

It was sad to see the relationship devolve like that but I can understand both sides. Personally I find the whole "soft" talk pretty disgusting, it's not like he was ever out of shape he just couldn't stay healthy, injuries are a part of the game he couldn't prevent that and we couldn't predict it.
