Hmmm... interesting.

Idk how long this keeps him out, but i almost hope he gets injured so we can IR for him the year... bc i doubt he makes the team. If he goes on IR we can control his rights for the year, keep him around the facility so we can monitor his progress and show him how we want him conditioned, be in the class room, etc...

And then next year when we've likely cut a couple guys from this competition and Forsett will likely be moving on, Richardson can have another shot at making the team so we maybe roll with Dixon, Buck and Trent.

From everything im seeing and hearing, he's not ready to make the team this year... but he was out of football completely for a year. A full year in a great organization with our coaching staffs guidance may be what he needs to reach some of that potential... but i also dont want to cut a useful player this year or waste a needed roster spot on a guy whos not ready just based on his potential. And i dont necessarily want to give up on him just yet.

To be honest, I'd be surprised if he even made it all the way through camp unless he comes back from this and does well right off the bat.  There's a legitimate chance that he'll be waived/injured and released with an injury settlement.  If he's not going to crack the roster this year, I don't see us having any interest in keeping him around for next year.

Never know, we held on to Rolando when it seemed like there was absolutely no reason to do so based on potential if he ever did re-commit himself. And we got decent value for doing so.

And i just think if you can hang on to a player with upside, without having to use up a roster spot or PS spot... do it. Especially since he's only making like the vet min. I'm all about accumulating and keeping assets. May turn into nothing, but i dont think it would hurt to bring him back for the off season next year.

And id give him a much better chance at improving while being at the teams facility under the microscope of the medical staff, trainers and coaches then being completely out of football and on his own like last year.

Now, again, all of this is assuming that the coaches see something they like or lots of potential in him when he was on the field, and that this injury continues to nag him throughout camp and he can be stashed on IR.

The numbers make it so tough, but you never know what happens with injuries.  Still, you're looking at 4 TEs and maybe 8 WRs (Chris Matthews has been very impressive, apparently) ahead of him.

Yea, which is why i dont get moving Daniel Brown to TE at all. Theres absolutely NO WAY either Waller or Brown has even a remote shot of making the roster as a TE. I mean Pitta probably will, but its no sure thing.

I think both would have a better shot making it at WR especially with Camp and Perriman out with injury questions and no guarantee theyll be ready for the season, reynolds just now learning the position, SSS injured and no timeline for return, etc... I mean right now at WR its Aiken, Wallace and Moore as the only guarantees.

So theres anywhere from 3-4 spots open hypothetically until all those guys get back on the field and prove theyll be ready for the start of the season. And the competition there with guys like Butler and Mathews isnt nearly as difficult as Watson, Gillmore, Maxx and Pitta. But maybe these are moves for next year and they plan on trying to stash one or both on the PS.

To be fair, I think the only reason McClain stuck around is because he didn't cost a penny sitting on the retired/reserve list.  Although only the minimum, are we really going to want to pay Trent to sit on IR for a season?  I'm doubtful.  He very well could, though.  I won't deny that.

I think WR is going to be an interesting battle.  With SSS and Perriman on the mend, they might opt to carry an extra guy to start the season at least.  It sounds like Moore and Reynolds are doing well, but still need some work.  I think both are likely to make it, but I think it's too early to say whether they're comfortable or not with those guys as the only other options if SSS or Perriman can't go week 1.  Someone like Jeremy Butler or Chris Matthews could factor into the roster conversation, or maybe someone like Waller sticks around, but there's not much experience or track record there, either.

The current injuries are going to make this tough, especially with so many of them aiming for week 1.  Regardless, we're going to have to see some players we like get cut.  Just not enough roster spots to go around.

Yea, WR looks crazy to me. Harbs loves Camp (so do i) but he cant get healthy. If he does get on the field for training camp though i see him making the team.... which then would make it hard for Reynolds imo, but i dont see putting him on the PS as an option bc he'd be scooped up by someone.

I love Butler and Matthews, but with SSS, Perriman, Aiken, Wallace, and Moore basically locks we're literally looking at 1-2 spots for Butler, Matthews, Camp, Reynolds, Clay, Brown and Waller. I'd hate to lose any of them. If camp stays injured idk that theyd IR him for another season so he could be lost. And we're not going to keep 5 WRs on the PS... so theres gonna be a lot of tough decisions to be made.

Camp/Reynolds have very similar skill sets as slot guys with return skills so i cant see keeping both, but theyd be my 1st two to keep out of that group. Clays only shot is as a return guy, but i cant see keeping him as only a returner. Butler was very solid last year when given reps, so i think he has a chance. Matthews, Brown and Waller are all big bodied guys with Matthews having the most experience and production, but Waller offers the most athleticism out of that group.

Idk... its just a murky situation. No idea what will happen or how many guys we'll keep.... and with all 3 skill groups being so deep its hard to decide where you want to keep an extra guy bc thats going to push a really good player off the roster at another position.

Now, this is just my opinion of course, but I'll run down the WR/TEs and what I think their chances are after the 5 you mentioned.

Jeremy Butler - I've heard that teammates love him and rave about his potential, but he might see his way to the open market again.  I think he'd be a decent replacement/insurance for Aiken if we can't re-sign him, but that's probably a minor concern.

Chris Matthews - I like the height, but he's in another tough spot with just not enough roster spots.  He could factor in if they really want some height on the outside.

Keenan Reynolds - I think he's a lock as long as he's not awful.  They raved about him too much for me to believe that they'd risk putting him through waivers.

Kaelin Clay - Clay is a prime PS candidate to me.  Despite reports that he's been making some plays in camp, he's still primarily a returner.  He'd be a guy I'd think would clear waivers no problem and be available if needed.

Michael Campanaro - I refuse to even put him on my roster until I see some semblance of a clean bill of health.

Daniel Brown - I just don't see it in him.  I wouldn't be concerned at all if we lost him.  I think he's one of those classic UDFAs that get overrated based on preseason.  He got a shot last year and didn't do much of anything with it.  Lost a lot of playing time down the stretch.

Darren Waller - I'd love to keep the guy, but Pitta's return makes it complicated.  4 TEs is reasonable but 5 is pushing it.  He really needs to continue to stand out on ST if he wants a shot.

HeJ sneezesimple fact gAnd. Monroe could verHrsell be hea lth y this year and  not have issues. With  him our O line is better. He's a proven left tackle in this league when healthy. He was our best linesman in 2013 and was excellent for the jags in the previous two seasons. Hes only 28-29..in his prime

what do we have now? aside from yanda?

nothing.

Thats Pretttty far from the truth. Im actually pretty excited about our Line this year. Stanley is much better than ppl give Him credit for and he wont Need much time to get up to speed. for some reason ppl keep forgetting about jensen too. Hes Been steadily improving and could be in for a breakout year.  And whos To say with the savings from  monroe Being released we wont Bring in another vet lineman? Yeah it Would have been nice to keep him around for depth purposes but 6 mill is nothing to Sneeze at for somebody who wasnt Very Durable anyway.

The Cap savings trump the dead money all day. Thats An overrated issue. Esp With it Being split over two years.

Stanley is much better than given credit for, based on what exactly?

I hope hes a stud just like the next guy, but saying anything definitive about his play based on a cpl comments from coaches and players doesnt mean or prove anything... and even if it did, his play against our back up back up pass rushers without pads on doesnt really say much.

Jensen isnt even getting first team reps at guard. Hes the 2nd team center right now. Granted things can change, but it doesnt say much right now about his potential as the starting LG. I thought it was his job to lose, but Urschel is the 1st team LG right now with Lewis rotating in first. Confusing, but thats the case.

If theres anything to hang your hat on with the line outside Yanda, its that Wagner will return to form with a clean bill of health. Outside of that, theres stuff to be hopeful for - but theyre hopes based on potential... not much concrete.

And again, signing a vet FA worth anything is a huge question at this point. Theyve had the money to do it, so the Monroe release doesnt really effect that. Theyve brought in Ducasse and Herremans already. Neither of those inspires much excitement. Maybe if someone gets cut we could grab someone, but if theyre getting cut from another team - again, not much excitement.

And the cap savings arent $6m. Its $2m. Yes, we get $6m in relief this year, but we have $4m dead money next year. Since we're likely going to carry some if not all of Monroes cap savings over to next year, that $4m dead money cancels it out. What does "cap savings trump dead money all day" mean?? If the savings are less than the dead money - the dead money very literally trumps it.

Dead money is literally just a negative cap savings.... theyre the same exact thing. So i really have no clue how one trumps the other in importance.

Right now this is how I see the wr corps but injuries could shake things up.

1) AIKEN

2) SSS

3) PERRIMAN

4) WALLACE

5) MOORE

6) CAMPANARO/ REYNOLDS -thiswill be the battle to watch. Cant seeboth of them making it unless injuries occur.

7) MATHEWS/ WALLER - both tall receivers and waller has value on special teams which could give him a slight edge. Tough to say  bc it seems like the coaches reallyare high on both of them. Not sure what to think about wallers move to tight end ..I don't think it will be a permanent thing by any means and he Will only line up there in certain packages- but from the little I saw from him he did look to have put on some weight and looked rather impressive. Mathews could be stashed on IR. tight ends will be watson, gilmore, maxx and pitta. Yes were keeping 4- which means only 3 rbs. Sorry Richardson,  talioferro and west- the numbers just don't work. Again unless injuries occur- I think one of these guys also gets stashed on IR.

Then you tell me why They made the move? and Dont Give me that Crap About us distancing ourselves from hisstance on marijuana. Im Fairly certain the F.O Knows what theyre Doing much better than we do. . It seems like ppl are overlooking Stanley Just bc They wanted to go in a diffrent direction with a sexier position. Really he was rated above Tunsil by many anyway. He was the 6th Pick in the draft so ofcourse hes Expected to come in and start right away.  And i Fully expect him to be a beast. His durability is a Huge factor as well.

Well - i think they made the move bc hes been injured and hasnt been a team guy... and since hes pushed back in small situations like asking to take a pay cut, or bulking up, they really expected push back if he was projected to be a back up.

I also dont think they wanted a vet breathing down Stanleys neck to start if he struggles, or take the chance that Monroe looks better in camp which then runs the risk of the team losing trust bc they see one guy clearly outperforming the other  - yet the coaches hand the younger guy the starting job anyways.

I think they felt the potential negatives outweighed the positive. They clearly just didnt like Monroe at this point - having Stanley just made it easier to do.

But, what im saying is - i dont think Stanleys performance in the off season has anything to do with their decision to release monroe. Whether he was tearing it up or struggling doesnt matter - they decided a while ago that Monroe was gone.

Btw I agree they had stanley rated above Tunsil - not sure what that has to do with anything i said though. I also thought Stanley was the better pass blocker which makes him the better prospect imo. I dont know why youre acting like i have an issue with the stanley pick.

All im saying is, if youre saying that people are under valuing Stanley bc they wanted to keep Monroe... then by the same token youre over valuing him... bc all you have to base your opinion on is what you thought of him coming out of college and where he was drafted. Unfortunately, that says absolutely ZERO about how he's playing right now.

Btw, Ogden was selected higher, and was not expected to start at LT right away. Start? Yes. But even the best LT ever wasnt ready, or at least wasnt the best option to start at LT his rookie year. An average vet starter did. And having that option for stanley, so he wouldnt be forced into starting if he's not ready is why i wanted to keep monroe. Not even necessarily for Monroe, but if Stanley struggles and loses confidence theres nothign we can do. Hes gonna just have to ride it out. And that can ruin a young player.

Not having a back up plan for a guy you just invested so much in, to me isnt a good idea or a great way to protect your investment.

All good points- but like i Also said- training camp hasnt Even begun Yet so theres Still plenty of time to add a backup plan/ vet as insurance or to start infront Of stanley.

I reserve my optimism for players that really impress me. I do not like judon at all. And Correa I like as a LB, not a 3-4 rush olb.I know it is unpopular to say that bout any ravens player. But not every player works out. Judon will be on the practice squad if that. Correa has much value but not on the edge. When Preston says a player is not impressive he is usually pretty accurate.

Just curious, which rookies (undrafted ones count as well) are you most looking forward to watch this season? Before you ask me the same question, my answer is twofold: none of them AND all of them. None of them because I don't pay attention to college football/film like a lot of our fellow posters so I only go by what you guys say, but I also say all of them because....well.....they're Ravens. Lol.

You're right - there is.

I just don't know what's out there worthwhile. There are always camp cuts, but it's rare that a team would part ways with a decent tackle. I mean Oher just got $21m over 3 yrs. if Oher is quality, just shows the absolute lack of options league wide at the position.

Maybe something gets done -- but I'm afraid we're going into yet another season with Hurst as the primary backup.

Hurst did not have a good year last year but he is entering his 3rd yr and has played well in the past but right now I'm comfortable seeing if he can perform better and see what Lewis and Wesley have to offer as well. If we do need to go get a vet we imo its best to wait until end of preseason to sign one.

I see Wallace as the clear-cut number one receiver right now.  He is the experienced deep threat that teams will be game planning against regardless of his down season at Minnesota last season.  Aiken earned the right to compete as the second wideout with Steve Smith Sr. simply based upon his production last year.  Yes, we might see Perriman later on in the season, but I seriously doubt that he will be ready for preseason or at the start of the year.  I don't see Moore at number 5, but either Campanaro or Reynolds will edge him out in preseason.  Matthews and Waller are long-shots because the team might not carry a 7th receiver except to fill in STs positions.  There is a potential for a late preseason pickup, but please don't let it be someone like Lee Evans (ooopsss).

When did Hurst play well? I remember us surviving his play... but never him playing "well."

Not that its the gospel, but PFF had him rated like the worst tackle ever.

Kube's use of the play action really helped Hurst out a lot. I wouldn't trust him at LT with Trestman calling the plays. He uses the play action well, but Trestman is far too pass happy to trust Hurst as it stands right now. But as a third year player it'll be interesting to see how he develops.

I'm honestly surprised he's still on the team. He better have the preseason of his career.

He wouldn't be on the team if the coaches believed that he was that bad. He's there on the roster for a reason.

Lol.

Will henry, Chris Moore and Kufusi. Will Henry is a freak. How often can a penetrator line up wide and win with explosion and bend so decisively on a couple plays the tackle could not even get his hands on him. Then 2 gap on a different play and hold up without giving an inch. He is a hard worker in the gym and will only get stronger and leaner in a ravens training and nutrition program. A little coaching up on techniques and he is a pro bowler in my opinion. Kufusi is out of position. He is flexible with very good burst for 285lbs. He is out of position and a little out of shape. He is not an interior player. His best position is 4-3 defensive end. He needs to lean out about 16-20 lbs for the position then tack on 10-12lbs of muscle. But he could very well be as good as Jared Allen. He has the raw athleticism, strength, motor and technique to be great if he gets his body right for 4-3 defensive end. And Chris Moore is more complete than advertised. He has top end speed and that extra gear with play making balls skills. But he is a far better route runner and explosive in tight areas to win intermediate in traffic.

He wouldn't be on the team if the coaches believed that he was that bad. He's there on the roster for a reason.

Yea, and that reason is theres literally no other LT on the roster. You have to have someone take the 2nd team reps, and be your back up.

Not strictly a mini-camp update, but could allow us to keep a couple of extra guys that we thought were out of chances:

That's actually pretty huge news.
