I like reading stuff like this.

Weddle:

Totally agree with another member that compared the weedle signing to the SSS signing but for the defense

Defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan appears to be in superb shape now wearing number 99. He ran from drill to drill and appears to have tapped into some newfound speed. He made an appearance in the offensive backfield on numerous occasions.

Quote

Those in attendance were treated to a show from Mike Wallace. He displayed blazing speed and stunned opposing cornerbacks during both one-on-one drills and team drills.

Quote

Rookie running back Kenneth Dixon put on a solid display running both inside the tackles and outside the tackles throughout the 2 hour practice. Quick to hit the gaps, the former Louisiana Tech standout had several long runs including a would-be touchdown early on in 11-on-11 team drills.

Dixon also fared well in check-down drills, flashing his ability to catch passes out of the offensive backfield. The Ravens 4th-round pick was able to get separation over the middle of the field and turned the receptions into big gains.

Quote

Third-year linebacker C.J. Mosley led the first team unit. That group consisted of rookie Kamalei Correa at the rush linebacker spot and Zachary Orr opposite Mosley in the middle. The Ravens will likely continue this trend as the others heal from injury. For now, Correa will get all the reps he can handle.

Linebackers Arthur Brown and Albert McClellan ran with the second team defense while Brennen Beyer and Chris Carter manned the third team unit

Quote

Cornerback Jimmy Smith was on the field Tuesday, however he did not participate in team activities. He did work with his positional coach at times throughout the afternoon. Shareece Wright andJerraud Powers started with the first team defense in his stead.

Maybe it's just the roster nerd in me, but I find it interesting that Beyer and Carter and playing inside.  That's a ton of bodies in the competition at ILB.  Mosley, Orr, Brown, Correa, McClellan, Beyer, Carter, Luckett, Onwuasor.

Love what I'm hearing about Weddle. Mini-Camp should be taken with a pinch of salt but it sounds like he's really settled here.

Just read a great article on NFL.com about Steve Smith and his decision to return for another year.

You can read it here:

http://www.nfl.com/curtaincall

Lots of interesting stuff and great read overall. But this really stuck out to me -- and gives GREAT insight into Flacco's leadership... even though many try to doubt it. This tells me everything I need to about him and how great a leader he is.

Smith is talking about how after the game he was injured, in the locker room he was all emotional with players/coaches telling him he could play again if he wanted to. But he says, Flacco had the biggest impact on him.

"Joe walked over to me and said, 'There is nothing you need to be ashamed of. The impact you've made on us in a short amount of time has taken people years to do. You make me better. Whatever you decide, you need to be proud of that.' " Smith recalled. "That broke me down."

Pees said they aren't moving to a 4-3, but expect a lot of different looks.  He singled out Arthur Brown and Maurice Canady as two standouts so far.

Dumervil had surgery on his foot earlier in the offseason but said he'll be good to go at some point during training camp.

I'd say you're looking at 6 CB total at the most.  You know, assuming health, that Jimmy, Shareece, and Powers are all safe.  It doesn't sound like Jimmy is doing too well right now, according to reports, but that's another conversation.

After that, it's wide open.  Young will get a spot as a 4th round draft pick and backup nickel option.  There have been reports that the team really likes Will Davis, but he also only has a touch over one game as a Raven to his name.  He is an option for both outside and nickel duties, though.  Price is in the fortunate spot of having his name dropped and likely being a better option than Canady and Wilson on the outside.  Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn't.  Based on how everything is constructed though, you'd have to think Arrington's chances are very slim.

I'd say you have 4 spots (Smith, Wright, Powers, Young) locked in, and 3 guys (Davis, Price, Canady) fighting for 1 or 2 spots.  Arrington, Wilson, and Sam Brown all look like long shots at this moment.

Yea I've heard they really like Davis and the fact they traded for him helps. Can't wait to see him on the field running around.

Could Price be another version of Cary Williams? PS player for another team that has a similar style of play to the Ravens but can't seem to crack the roster, then a injury here allows him to catch a few eyes of the coaching staff. I'll definitely be keeping a eye on him now.

I think Arrington is insurance on Davis. That might not be how the coaches see it, but if Davis is healthy i can't see both he and Arrington making the team. If Davis isn't the same player then Arrington has a pretty good shot.

Tweets by Jeff Zrebiec on today's practice:

Darren Waller also made a couple of nice catches, Dean Pees singled out rookie corner Maurice Canady and Arthur Brown for their play.

Dean Pees: "we're not changing to a 4-3 defense. We're not going to make wholesale changes." Pees said Ravens play everything.

Jerry Rosburg said Ravens are getting Keenan Reynolds as many reps at returner as possible. Reynolds had good practice. Made several catches

Reply

Tweets by Brian Brower:

DC Dean Pees says he thinks LB Arthur Brown is having a heck of a camp. Has improved greatly.

Trestman says there is an extreme sense of competition on offensive side of football.

Pees says he thinks we will all be surprised at just how improved the secondary is.

Running back @realbuckallen had a stellar day with the first team offense, ran like a man on a mission. #Ravens

Tight end Darren Waller took advantage of his reps today by making several nice grabs for some big gains.

Quote

Not a great day for Ryan Mallett as he turned in his worst performance of minicamp. Several errant throws and batted passes. #Ravens

What's going on with Mallet? Hopefully a better defense makes him look worse?

But it talks about errant passes so that's more on him

Qbs rarely look consistently good in otas. They force as many throws as possible to get a feel for their capabilities in gamelike simulations. They have no caution in these situations. They also want to get a feel for what their targets are capable of and it helps greatly with timing and chemistry to make harmless mistakes together.

That said... Its Ryan mallett.

He is significantly better than Flacco, right?

I was merely mocking the people on here who were all about Mallet last year when he started for us.  Some people actually thought he should be our starter over Flacco, no joke.

Yea.  Remember last year after week 1, this thread title- "Will Trestman's Offense work."  Good times.  Its the slow time of the year.

Its the offseason.  There isn't much to talk about, but hearing about how players are developing and look in practice at least gives us an idea of how they are.  No one is saying that so-and-so looks good, hes going to be elite, its just a way to look at players.  But I bet if BP was out there dropping passes and looking terrible you would be the first to say something about the negative and ignore all the positive.  Its minicamp reports man, chill out mr positive.

I read that Pitta and Watson have the 1st and 2nd TE spots on lock thus far in practice....

Thats all well and fine, but I was really looking forward to seeing the continued development of young Maxx Williams ( after all not many TEs make an impact in their rookie years.

I hope this kid can show out and really earn some significant playing time this season!

I don't remember what kind of paycut Pitta took to come back, but I was kind of disappointed we kept him.  I wanted to see Crocket and Maxx get more reps and now its going to be that much harder, unless injury of course.  Those two are our future and I think they need more time on the field, getting Watson was good for veteran preference, I just didn't see a reason in bringing back Pitta, not too mention Boyle looked good as well.

Kind of exactly I how feel as well, although if Pitta and/or Watson goes on to put up stellar numbers you want see me complaining. I like to see young players develop rather than sitting for 3 years then on the 4th year get some action play well and overprice themselves.  Kind of like McPhee, Kruger even Ellerbe guys that played well or sparely for a few years then saw a big boost in production when given significant PT and well hit it big on free agent market.

We all knew about McPhee, and we hoped and waited for him to look as impressive as rookie year again. Finally he finds his nitch and becomes a free agent.

We watch Kruger get shuffled between DE & LB then finally he becomes situational rusher finds success boom end of rookie contract...

I think we underestimated Canady around here. Nobody seemed to like the pick, yet when I watch Senior Bowl practice he was owning it, and all I've heard about him is positive. I think he may surprise us.
