[News] Ravens Safety Matt Elam: 'This Is My Last Chance'

18 posts in this topic

The former 2013 first-round pick had two disappointing seasons, then missed last year because of a torn biceps. Now he feels wiser and more prepared to contribute, in whatever capacity that may be.

Is Webbs spot at safety really that secured? As far as I know, he still has to learn a new position. I'd really like the idea of a punishing safety like the Pollard's and Ihedigbo's next to the free roaming safety like the Reed's. Maybe Elam and Weddle could be that pair?

Webb, played Safety in college, and as along as he has been on the team, he understands this defense, on top of that he did finish the season playing Safety....I think he will not only make the back end better, it should prolong his career....I love the move IMO...But knowing Webb is 30 and Weddle 31 we want guys ready to step in when they move on...JMO

I would honestly like to see Elam turn things around. He was drafted first round for nothing. His single biggest challenge to consistency is tackling, that has to be locked down at this point. Bodies are too big to not wrap up or else you pinball and look like a fool. This might not guarantee your roster spot, but it will certainly guarantee a quick out if not able to become a solid tackler, especially in secondary these days.

Sorry, but let's not pretend that this is a charity community - this is a business, and the players are employees who are expected to deliver nd get their jobs done. As one former "employee" famously said: "Talk is cheap. Let's play ball." So, Matt, we've all heard all your committed words - now go and back them up on the field. If you do, you're fine. If not, then sorry, but...

Even if Webb was really a novice in playing S - which he isn't, since - as others have already pointed out - he played safety at Nicholls, he was even drafted as one - it would be no problem. Vested veteran corners and safeties routinely play the other position if they have to, usually without major hiccups. Huff, who we brought in from Oakland a few sesons ago, was a safety, but he played most of his last season with the Raiders at CB, as their depth at the position got seriously depleted. Our own Anthony Levine, a safety by trade, played CB at times.

So, I don't think we have to worry about Webb making the transition.

We'll see what happens with Elam and Brooks. I want them to succeed but it will really be up to them. I am glad we have Weddle and Webb.

Matt Elam I campaigned for you hard bro! Smh it's on you!

I also campaigned for this guy over and over again. Now it's absolutely upto him or Ozzie and them won't have a choice but to let Elam go. Brooks is a baller. And I believe it's only a matter of time till he steps up and contributes.

I absolutely agree! We will be fine and Webb will be great as our deep safety "if he can stay healthy"
