Best all time receiver 2-5

31 posts in this topic

So I heard this debate. And it's not as easy as it seems. After Jerry who are the top receivers all time?

I think Randy Moss honestly.  Imagine if he would of had any of the work ethic of Rice.  He coasted by on raw physical talent, the guy was just insane and a blast to watch.  Its too bad he went out the way he did.

T.O. is easily number two to me and Randy Moss is number three.

After that, guys like Hutson, who basically sculpted the receiver position, Tim Brown, and Lynn Swann may be up there. I personally really like Marvin Harrison, but I think some people may be turned off because he played with Peyton Manning.

I think I'd put Owens 2. Which I questioned myself, but honestly he was way more complete of a player than Moss and he never had a bad season on the field. Moss had the Raiders time plus when he was dumped by the Pats and floated around doing nothing.

I also think Irvin has to be up there as well.

I think I would have to go Hutson. Did so much for the position and his stats compared to other WRs at the time is pretty crazy.

I don't know if I can rate Moss or T.O. at 2 either considering the shenanigans they brought along(still stupid T.O. didn't get in on the first ballot). Top 5 for sure but it knocks them down a peg for me.

You ever watch that episode of First Take where its Skip, Chad Johnson, and TO.  For the life of me, I don't know how Skip can say TO isn't a HoFer.  Guy is insane, as we all.

That is Skip Bayless for you. We just nod and ignore him

If you had to go with a deep threat Randy Moss is the best ever. Id go with Calvin Johnson as the big target. Steve Largent as the best rout runner. Wes Walker as the waterbug and Jerry Rice as the do everything greatest. If I was building a core that would be my top 5. Id replace Welker with TO for my overall top 5. Sorry not going back before the 80's. Gotta go with what Ive seen

I'd say:

2: Moss

3: Tim Brown (the poor man's Jerry Rice)

4: Lynn Swann (On a modern offense he would have put up insane numbers)

5: Michael Irvin

Honestly not sure how anyone can justify leaving TO out of the top three.

If it's because of off the field, then that's just silly to me because he was one of the greatest on the field.

2. Derrick Mason
3. Anquan Boldin

I feel like Michael Jackson should replace Torrey and Steve should be 3, but otherwise, good list.

Depends on your criteria. If you want him for one game sure, over an entire season though his shenanigans can add up and start to hurt the on field product. There is a reason he went through as many teams as he did and I take stuff like that into account.

One thing I wonder is just how good SSS would have been if he had a QB like Peyton or Brady throwing to him. Even last year he was one of the top WRs in the NFL before getting injured.

His on the field shenanigans didn't stop him from being top 3 in receiving yards and touchdowns and sixth in receptions all time. No doubt a lot of teams couldn't deal with his flamboyant and very outspoken attitude, but as a receiver, I'd put him on my dream team.

SSS is easily my top Ravens receiver ever, honestly. I remember a question was posed to all the AFCN writers as to whether SSS was a HoF player or not and two said no. I was shocked to hear that two would say no.

Smith I believe is a better all around player than Moss or TO. Easily.

I just value Chemistry more in my all time teams and he was tough to work with. Plenty of players out there who did very well for themselves and didn't bounce around like him or Moss. Obviously a great player and all but it knocks him down just a peg for me. Probably would be between him and Moss for #3 on my list though with all that said.

Yeah I think he deserves to be in the hall, I'd still put Mason over him for Ravens since I only count years that players played for us but if we had SSS in his prime with Flacco, it would be no contest

Better all around than Moss? Easily because Moss only ran the go route, really.

However, bettet than T.O? Can't get behind that.

And I'll still maintain that both were better players than Smith

I haven't followed the whole T.O. drama just because I thought he was an idiot, but was it an issue in the field with his teammates or just the F.O.? I know he went out and played in the Super Bowl on a recently broken leg. Something like six weeks, right? That's guaranteed to earn respect.

I count them as well and SSS, for me, has been nothing short of incredible. While I'm not expecting another 2015, I wouldn't be shocked by it just because he's so damn tough and determined. I think he's a dark horse for CPOY.

iirc it was a broken ankle, and that gained a ton of respect from me. I remember one specific play where he caught a ball and was headed to the sideline but the safety was coming at him full speed so he stopped, stiff armed the safety and then walked out of bounds.

Well, the ankle is part of either the tibia or fibula, depending on if it's inside or outside, but yeah, one tough butt dude.

Forgot about the Super Bowl but my brother was an Eagles fan at the time(he was pretty young) and I remember T.O. saying a lot of bad stuff about the team. Combined with injuries things pertty much self destructed for those Eagles. Think Eugene Monroe had he not been injured and said worse things about the team as opposed to just going on about Mary Jane.

Yea I get the point your making, but if you're basing it off talent alone which I think most are he has to be up there.

Based on talent alone, Randy Moss is #1.

Moss has more natural talent than all of these guys including Rice. But he did not translate that in to being the greatest all time reciever and in fact had multiple below average seasons which can't be said for any of these other players.

To and Smith there's tons of pros and cons for both so I could see either way.
