[News] John Harbaugh Expects Ronnie Stanley To Be A Starter

15 posts in this topic

Ravens No. 6-overall pick Ronnie Stanley has only worked out at left tackle (not left guard) and says things are going better than he expected they would so far. He’ll have the chance to beat out Eugene Monroe on the field.

Hard to image any Ravens players sleeping too soundly these days with all the competition going on. There is only one position I can think of that doesn't have most players than potential roster spots and that is place kicker, which honestly Tucker is pretty much locked in. I am okay with that one though, cus he pushes himself hard as well as coach Harbaugh being a special teams coach back in the day.

I don't doubt that Monroe will be back sometime soon to increase the pressure on Stanley. There isn't a clear LT right now but that could change if Monroe comes back healthy in time for training camp. We found out last year that Flacco will suffer if we don't have solid depth at LT.

I get so sick of these lame writers yakking, just too afraid to tell the truth. The truth is that Monroe stinks. Stanley had better be ready. Otherwise Joe is in for a tough time. Monroe proved he couldn't block last year. Why the Ravens signed him to a new contract is beyond me. That money could have been used for Osemele.

Monroe proved he couldnt block last year? When was that exactly?? When he was on the sideline? Don't get me wrong, its frustrating that he hasnt been on the field, but when he has hes been a solid player. If Stanley is an upgrade - great - play him... and by all means i hope he is. I want the best 5 guys on the field. But if he needs a year of development to become a dominant force, or if the battle is very close but Stanley is leaps and bounds better than our LG options then I'd want Monroe and Stanley manning the left side together... But, go ahead and knock Monroe for his availability (though injuries are largely out of a players control unless theyre suffered doing something wreckless). But his play, when on the field, has been good... not great, but good.

Perfectly said and I said almost the same thing on another article. Monroe is one of our best linemen when healthy. He has been on the sidelines more the last two years than playing but the rest of his career he has been one of the healthier linemen in the league. Sure he has been injured but who hasn't been? I think we have probably sent more people on IR the last couple seasons than anyone else. Which is why the Ravens are changing up their nutrition program and are practicing differently to try to avoid injuries. Stanley will be a starter but the question is where. For now he is our LG but if he beats out Wagner or Monroe for their tackle spots so be it. But You are not going to get a tackle even close to Monroe's skill level for the 4-5 million this season that we would save. If Stanley went down or Wagner went down we would be hosed. The only reason I would see the Ravens cutting Monroe is if they think he is studying more about medical cannabis than he is about football.

First of all Monroe is an above avg LT and a damn good one at that.

Secondly, what NEW contract did Monroe get w/ the Ravens?

Lastly, the Ravens offered what they were willing to pay Osemele.  BTW, we still have about $7M in cap space left, so if they wanted to pay Osemele more to keep him they had the resources to do it.  You're just typing to type at this point.

Being completely honest, it's not that Monroe stinks he's been decent when on the field, the problem has been he's been injured far too long leaving Hurst & Osemele to man the position...

Let's remember when Monroe signed in 2014 offseason, his 37.5M contract was thought to be a reasonable deal, considering B.Albert got 47M with Dolphins , & the Raiders offered Saffold 42M ( although the deal fell through )
And PFF had Monroe ranked as the best FA Offensive Tackle. https://www.profootballfocus.com/ranking-the-2014-free-agents-offensive-tackles/

I'm not sure how the Ravens could have used the money from 2014 Free Agency to pay Osemele, whom was also coming off of injury ( Back Surgery remember..?) The Raiders just overpaid for Osemele a player no one knew about outside of Baltimore until he got offered a huge contract of 60M and it's reported he's going to play guard still... The Ravens made an "aggressive offer" in Harbs words to keep him in hopes of him possibly being the future LT to which they had little film on to know if that would be a natural transition..

The bigger mistake of that offseason was the Pitta extension coming off the Hip injury, because perhaps that money could have kept Art.Jones in house or went towards an early extension for McPhee ( but being honest prior to him exploding for sacks McPhee seemed like should have been a simple re-sign)

Agree with Harbaugh.....if Stanley doesn't start @ the number 6 pick, we missed.

As far as mistakes go in recent years, Ozmund has made a ton of em. If folks were fair about his record since 2012 you'd rank him bottom of the league. Hes at the very bottom of my list.

I can't tell a lie I saw a special on Ronnie Stanley and was like Ummmmmm hmmmmmmm but when the the Ravens selected him I still had a couple question marks but knowing how the Ravens roll I'm getting pumped for him now and have to wait and see what happens! Shaq Lawson and James harrison are coming so it will be nice watching him grow and maybe he will make an impact like KO did! Time to let Ozzie and Co enjoy the fruit of their labor while their still ripe! NO MORE EXCUSES!

Clearly you didn't do any research on what other teams have done in the draft lately...

...Maybe in a perfect world Stanley could step into this spot, but honestly would feel better if Stanley played guard this year. I think he would learn a lot and would buy some time for the weight room. I really thought Monroe has played well for us enough to not count him out of the equation despite his injury woes.

Harbs is just trying to talk tough to light a fire under Monroe for added trade bait/competition

I did not evaluate Newsome strictly upon the draft.  His total record was considered.  We need new blood in that office.

i think its very clear that the FO are ready to let Stanley take over at LT. He was the 6th overall pick in the draft. Usually when a LT is pick that high they tend to start. That doesnt mean they do well, but some have come in and did their job. Here's to hoping Stanley is one of them lol. I think trading Monroe is the best option. Get his contract off the books for next year to resign big boy Brandon Williams. Also Tuckers deal is going to get done soon...hopefully. Jensen played well last year at LG i wouldn't be surprised if he somehow wins the LG position.
