40 Cory Ross days until kick off

ross%2040_zpstqs2knl0.jpg

We had this guy the season before Ray Rice.  He was like the prequel to Rice.  Very short, super shifty. He averaged 6.0 yards, but had only 72 career yards ( 06 / 07 ).  Someone told me back then, "If you like Cory Ross, you will love Ray Rice. "  I liked the guy.

39 Alan Ricard days until kickoff

baltimore-ravens-running-back-jamal-lewi

He was Jamal Lewis' blocker for so many of his prime years. They were smash mouth and they didn't back down. They are still close, according to Jamal - LINK.

We've skipped a few days but it's now 36 BJ Sams days until kickoff

2005%2BRavens_600x400.jpg

BJ was a productive returner for us through the mid-2000s. His 2004 rookie season kickoff return yardage of 1251 yards is still at team record. I'm on record as saying his injury in late 2006 kept us from having a better shot at the championship that season... another player on this list - Cory Ross- performed admirably in replacement but Sams could have given us something extra, especially in the Colts game where there were 8 kick/punt returns.

Also, as a bonus - it is 6 Michael Campanaro days until the Ravens preseason kicks off against the Panthers

Baltimore+Ravens+v+New+Orleans+Saints+HD

His preseason number counts because this is leading to our preseason opener.

I have been working out of our Annapolis shop since last week. Life has been in a mild form of chaos as a result. Should be back to normal next week. Thanks for taking up the slack.

34 Lorenzo Taliaferro days until kick off.

I love the fact that to some of our players, faith matters, and they are not ashamed to express their connection to their beliefs.  Moreover, I  am proud of the team and organization that respects and allows such expressions.

Good ST player, he was the lead blocker for a lot of huge Jacoby returns

33 Priest Holmes days until kick off

No McClain4RB??

Holmes is a cool 'oh he was a Raven?' player, Jamal of course wrestled his job away

TBH it looked like we may have made the wrong choice at first. The Priest lit it up in KC before a litany of injuries. And of course, we know what Jamal turned out to be.

Still can't help to think what Holmes would have been if he could have stayed healthy. He was one of our greatest UDFA finds.

KC had a tremendous OL and he was a machine - a few awesome years in a row. He was an FF juggernaut before it was really popular. He was rivaling Tomlinson in the early 2000s

Meh production wise with Jamal I don't see an additional championship.   2001 with Jam out it woulda been nice but that's about it. Jam got yards priest got the TDs

I was so shocked when we signed him that I jumped and made a sound akin to a truck hitting an eagle mid-cry.

I didn't even know we were pursuing him in the first place. Every report mentioned the Cowboys Steelers and Raiders

31 Jamal Lewis days until kickoff

GettyImages-728708.0.jpg

Another 'under a rock' Ravens player. Jamal was a ferocious, rumbling monster out of Tennessee. He helped us win the Super Bowl his rookie season and rushed for 2,066 yds and an offensive player of the year award in 2003. Injuries took their toll on him later, his playing style was so savage.

Another bonus: 1 Randall Cunningham day until the Ravens open the preseason against the Panthers

Randall+Cunningham+Son+Dies+Hot+Tub+Acci

Randall was only here a short time in 2001 and had a previous connection with Brian Billick. He performed pretty well, judging by his stats and won the two games he started. Maybe someone who watched him could fill us in?

Cunningham played very well for us in the short time he was here. I've told a few people in my passing that care about Ravens football that yes, Randall Cunningham was indeed a QB for the Baltimore Ravens and most people don't realize that.

He played in 6 games, subbing in for the first four. In one of them he showed off a bit of his old self, rushing 4 times for 40 yards, one of them being an 11 yard TD score.

The two games he started for us were very close victories over the Jacksonville Jaguars (18-17) which came down to a 2 yard TD pass to "The Missile" with about 4 minutes left in the game to take the lead and the victory.

The win against the Steelers was a defensive struggle, it was a lone TD pass from Cunningham to Shannon Sharpe early in the second quarter, then it would be Matt Stover's leg and the defense that won the game 13-10.

The numbers were rather pedestrian, but Cunningham did what Dilfer did for us and just managed the game and got us in a position to win them.

Not really so much wrestled the job away. Priest actually got hurt the season before the Ravens drafted Jamal (5th overall) and Priest was about to become a free agent. First round high draft pick versus UDFA, injured, about to get a raise...the writing was on the wall really. Holmes was really good and is is a shame the injury bug caught up to him. Then not too long after that KC finds Larry Johnson. Then he gets the injury bug only a couple seasons later.

I was just getting ready to get on here and hunt down a picture of Jamal.

I knew from the get go #31 was going to be Jamal.  He was my first favorite Raven.  Still my favorite Ravens RB.  He was simply a beast.
Watching him play was just amazing.

Happy birthday! Your birthday, in addition to being the Ravens preseason opener, also marks 30 Bernard Pierce days until kickoff

baltimore-ravens-bernard-pierce-top-trie

Bernard was a 3rd round pick out of Temple who showed great promise his rookie season (another rookie RB who helped us to a Super Bowl) but injuries and off-the-field trouble eventually derailed his Ravens career. He's now on the New York Jets.

And, yes, that is him hurdling Eric Weddle in the 4th&29 game.

San Diego's defense was a mess that day lol
