[News] Ryan Mallett 'Light Years' Ahead As He Leads Offseason Offense

18 posts in this topic

Ryan Mallett beat the Steelers with less than two weeks to prepare last year. Now the Ravens’ No. 2 quarterback has the reins of the offense with Joe Flacco sidelined, and Mallett is trying to make the most of it.

Let's just hope he's grown up since his time in Houston. Let's be honest, we are hoping Mallett literally never plays a snap for the Ravens because we want Flacco to come back healthy and play for the next 8 years. When Mallett was relegated to back up duties with his former employer he acted like a petulant child, showing up late for meetings and missing team planes for away games. His talent on the field has never really been a concern, but at the end of the day... good for him for taking advantage of these reps and helping the other players with their development.

Glad to hear Mallett is progressing and getting his timing down with some of the starters. You really should have a good backup quarterback.

Hoping he's mentally matured from the Houston days. I do like him as our back up (much better than Mr pick 6)

I'm hoping he absolutely lights it up in preseason even thou some would scream to start him any time flacco makes a bad throw

In my judgment we can't expect to have a better #2 that can pretty much run the exact same offense Flacco does taking advantage of all the new weapons we have speed wise. So, I'm happy as long as Mallett understands he's a back up to Joe.

No harm in him challenging Joe to step up his game. All on the field of course.

Mallet is a solid #2 going into the season. He gives you exactly what you want a solid signal caller that can give you a chance to win ball games.

It is important to have two solid QB's in today's NFL. We hope Joe never goes down again but Mallets presence makes me feel a little more at ease if we had to survive any time without Joe moving forward.

Ryan technically is only in his third year. Somebody out there is going to get a decent QB and its probably going to be AFC team.

Wow, two hours has gone by and nobody has called for him to be the starter yet.

Maybe some of the "fans" on here really are starting to get it...

Lets see how good the Offensive line is first. Nobody might not have to call out to replace Joe. Joe will shine or get clobbered again. My guess clobbered.

I may be overly optimistic but I think our o-line will be good this year. Wagner will play better and I'm thinking Jenson claims the guard spot

Having Mallett this offseason will only make this team better. Obviously it will push Joe to pick his game up, but I think it will help improve a lot of people on offense and defense. Having a qb that can run the same plays as Joe will give guys like Moore and Reynolds a chance to get to a better understanding of the offense, without playing on the first team offense. And Mallett's play should present a challenge for the second team defense, and hopefully pushing them to play better during practices.

Guess you forgot about that fat contract extension Joe got.  Mallett's off season play isn't going to force Joe to pick his game up.

The front office isn't going to pay that much to a QB who needs a backup to make him pick his game up.

No harm at all. In fact it's in his nature to keep pushing I think. He has all the physical tools that Flacco has except Joe's temperament I think. Otherwise I think Mallett plays with a fire and is a passionate guy for sure. But, just going by his history at other teams, I don't want him to become a destabilizing force within the locker room is what I meant really. I don't want him to start playing politics with Joe's position as our #1 QB option.

Mallet should want to strive to be our number one if not you never get the best out of a player.  I met Ryan and he seems to be a great guy with a great sense of humor and incredible arm.  The part in this article that stands out to me is he believes he has learned more this offseason than ever.  That speaks volumes for our organization as well as Ryans's growth and maturity.  Good luck Ryan and keep getting better.  Perfect world is you get another shot and with another team because of your growth and maturity.

He's also had no trouble playing a full season with a weak offensive line before either, so not really an assumption that he gets injured or even "clobbered" behind a bad Oline.

Somehow managed to win 8 games and almost make the playoffs in 2013 behind a dreadful offensive line and about as little a talented offense as I've ever seen.
