So many TE's, what do we do?

45 posts in this topic

We sure seem to have an abundance of TE's. Good ones, too.

Looks like Pitta could return to form, although I think we'll be very cautious with him. Who do we keep? What do we do with the excess?

Assuming health, Watson, Williams, and Gillmore all have a place on this team.  After that, the question becomes whether we keep 4 or not.  Pitta is still a wildcard. He might look alright in OTAs but let's see what happens when the contact starts.  Waller is transitioning to the position and we have no idea how that's going to go right now.  He could force us to keep him on the roster or he could show he needs development and end up on the PS.  Boyle is suspended for 10 games so we have some time to make a decision on what to do with him, and with how things have gone these past couple of years, I'd expect injuries to play a part in whether there's a spot for him or not.

Maybe we should give Pitta as many reps as possible in the pre-season games, rather than going soft with him. Then, we'll know with more certainty whether we can count on him. The hip is probably as strong as it will get at this point, so better to know sooner, rather than later. Opens up our options too.

west coast

our offense is set for it,

OC = Trestman

RB = dixon the future

WR, need I say anything

TE again all catching TE's

slot WR's

everybody is speed and catching

we really have the chance to see something special

Could Pitta be a worthy trade?

No, but Crockett could be. But I'd keep him and Maxx at all costs. Could be a lethal duo.

We will keep four tight ends. Williams is a lock because he is a young promising draft pick. Gillmore is a lock because he has shown he can be a well rounded tight end. Watson is a lock because we brought him in for his leadership and we gave him the money. That leaves one spot available between Boyle, Pitta, and Waller. Boyle shot himself in the foot with his second suspension which may lead to us cutting the draft pick later on. 10 games lost in his second season is not making a good impression. So if Pitta's hip shows he can still play at not have it bother him I think Pitta has the best shot at being the 4th tight end on the roster. I think we try to put Waller on the practice squad but he will probably get picked up elsewhere just because of his 4.4 speed and height if it comes to that. But there is still a lot of football to go. I think we will get a better sense of the situation once training camps start when the pads go on and then we can see who really makes the plays.

I keep Maxx at all costs and let Boyle and Waller continue to develop this year while Watson and Pitta get the load.  If the market is out there for Crockett this is the time to get value for him.

Why is Crockett the guy you would get rid of?

Unless Waller all of a sudden hurts his ankle. ( wink wink nudge nudge )

Do they verify players on I.R. ?

Hope none get injured.  We thought we had the same "problem" last year, didn't we?

Nick Boyle being suspended 10 games opens up a roster spot for at least 10 weeks. After 10 weeks he'll probably be put on the PS being a young player who's missed so much time. Yes you'll have to risk him to waiver but if you lose your 3rd TE I don't think you're too upset.

Waller will be placed on PS or IRed. He did well on ST but didn't show much of anything as a WR. It'll take time for him to transform his body to a TE and build the strength required to play as an inline TE. I don't even expect to see him much in preseason. Pure developmental Year for him imo.

Pitta is clearly a wild card. If he can return to Pitta form that'd be a great problem to have. Pitta would actually take snaps away from a couple WRs because of his ability to play the slot. Obviously you gotta see him actually play but if healthy, I see no reason not to keep him around.

Gilmore, Maxx and Watson are locks.

It should be interesting to see how things play out. Trestman definitely likes to use his TEs and he has a bunch of them.

Before OTAs, I would have said Pitta is getting PUP'd, but he looks good out there. Someone is getting cut or *hurt* week 10

Well from the looks of things right now it looks like we'll stunt Maxx Williams' growth.

We keep 'em all! I see us keeping all four TEs with the exception of Waller who will be on the PS this year. Boyle is out for 10 games, so we'll see how our TE depth holds up for the first 10 games. I think having all 4 TEs makes sense because our offense is going to run a lot of 2 TE formations.

May the best man win.

I just hope maxx is the one to win, because I think he's a top 3 talent at TE who needs the game reps before he's ready to produce at that level. Crockett has been injured often in his 2 years so Watson could be many things for us, veteran presence, top notch mentor(helping with the conditioning and fitness changes were bringing and taking maxx under his wing), insurance policy for a starting quality guy in case of injury, and a great 2nd/3rd option in a TE heavy offense.

Big picture Watson was a good signing, I just hope our young guys don't get their growth stunted

Maxx should progress in his second year, he had a solid rookie season. Gilmore and Watson are both talented and will provide versatility for us at the TE position. I see Waller being our 4th TE because of his contributions on special teams. Sadly I don't see Pitta being able to play in the regular season.

Exactly what I'm worried about. I like Gilmore as the main blocking TE but then you have Max,Pitta and Watson fighting for time as the receiving TE and I'm getting the feeling Max might be getting the short end of the stick. Hope Max shows something in camp and preseason to make them play him.

He had a fine fantasy season but Watson's forte is definitely blocking.

I have never heard he's a good blocker.

Yup. If he's in peak playing shape he reminds me of a harder nosed Jason witten.

I was already worried about that when we signed Watson, then Pitta decides to come back. I hope Maxx is the starter.

I just don't see it. There are so many talented TE's in the NFL these days. Maxx isn't even close to the top 3 IMO. He might not even be the most talented TE on our roster.

Maxx has to be the one to take that challenge. Nothing will be given to him, he'll have to earn it. I honestly don't think anyone will have a major impact at the TE position because all those guys will be rotated.

I agree his potential might be great but right now he's the 3rd or 4th best TE on the team depending on if Pitta is healthy or not. Can't wait to see his progression this year. He could quickly catapult himself to the head of the TE class and take over starting next year, but it'll take work on his part.

In fantasy leagues they'll probally list Baltimore TE as a player.

I think we keep Watson, Maxx, and Crockett, no doubt. I do think Pitta finds his way on the roster, but that is very iffy. I like Boyle, but after his suspension, he'll either be IR'ed or put on PS. Waller will face the same fate I think.

While I wholeheartedly agree, it's worth noting that his re-injury of his hip that occurred in Cleveland was entirely non-contact. It is somewhat encouraging that he is presumably able to make cuts, sprint, jump, etc in OTAs.

But I agree, tempor expectations for now, it would be something else to get him back on the field given his reliability and chemistry with his QB.
