Timmy Jernigan poised for a breakout?

86 posts in this topic

Seeing the new picture of jernigan in LFW.. I'm impressed. He looks like a totally different person. He has been pudgy in his first 2 years and since college he has been known to have questionable conditioning and he has had some slight nagging injuries in his lower body, and he has been a powerful and agile guy but has lacked explosion thus far... This weight loss could really turn him into something special, going a long way in fixing almost every single flaw in his game. Could anyone confirm how much weight he has lost? And just how much of a leap do you think He could make in the next 2 years with this newfound commitment? Jernigan could very well become the best player on the defense if he is healthy. It's not a stretch to expect him to be top 5 or better among DTs in sacks and tfl

He's been getting better with more experience, and the weight loss mixed with the shade by Warren Sapp plus the influx of new pass rushers may be the final pushes he needs to become more dominant. Do I think he will be a major piece next year? Yes. Do I think he'll be a Top 5 DT next year? I doubt it, but its a nice goal for him to reach for

I don't know about his weight and condition, but count me in the Timmy hype train. He was dominant in the second half of last season, and this season he is hungry, it's clear. Just watch him speak in the last video.

Production wise I don't know what to expect precisely, but he's gonna be a nightmare. Him and C. Davis (who's also in great shape apparently) are goning to make our DL elite.

He does look good but what impressed me more is his demeanour. He clearly is maturing, sounds like completely different person. I can't wait to see him wreck the line.

If he can stay healthy idk why he wouldn't have over 8+ Sacks. The dline is stacked. He should be be fresh all year.

That's why I try to avoid some ota topics. To me we are extremely deep in the front 7 so I fear I'm overrating players

As an FSU guy I'd love to see Timmy dominate this year. His biggest issues in college was his conditioning and his knack for relying solely on his talent, I think those same issues showed up early last year. Timmy went into last season with high goals but his work ethic didn't match them. In the NFL, especially with the Ravens, not working hard isn't an option.  From his listening to his presser it seems like the coaches are staying on him hard and it'll only make him reach his full potential imo. Definitely excited to see him in his 3rd year take off.

I'm taking the wait and see approach with Jernigan. To this end, I heard a lot of hoopla, like steal of the draft, players to break out in year two,etc...But I have not seen any above average continual performances. Maybe, he will come alive as contract #2 is coming soon?

If he can put it all together for a full season his sack numbers would be ridiculous for an interior rusher.

If he was averaging like a sack a game as a rookie. There is no reason double digits aren't  on the horizon. He worked hard with Dockett but this year he cleaned his eating up. As Harbs is pushing for that as well as training programs for all players. Something that was always missing from Focketts training. A leaner body definitely results in speed and explosion. As much potential as he has, Henry has more raw skill. He just has so rare burst, bend, leverage and closing burst. Jernigan and Henry could be a devastating tandem

I know someone that knows him pretty well and he told me that Jernigan's whole mentality changed after his benching early last season.

Good post and observation and top5 is very reslistic. You know how I grade work ethic. Turns Geno Atkins to best penetrator. Lane Johnson becomes an athletic and dominant presence. Jj watt would not be the best player without work ethic. Leaner means faster. And it is exciting to anticipate his as well as Henry's potential. For Jernigan, being a little pudgy is the only thing standing in the way of elite explosion and athleticism for the position. As for will Henry the only player in the draft with more impressive combo of explosion, athleticism and power than him at his position is Nkemdiche who is roided up. Think if Henry was doing the same thing!! Rankins is more refined and active than Henry but Henry has better raw tools. A couple lineman did consistently  overwhelm Rankins in a man up confrontation. No opponent consistently overwhelmed Henry. And he just recently found and started his fanatical work ethic. With time of working hard  and learning from players like Jernigan and Ben Watson to refine his training, nutrition techniques he could become next to unblockable. Jernigan and Henry have awesome raw skills.

Obviously, based on his improvement at the end of the season.

I think he's looking at a very good year if he stays focused. That seemed to be his issue. Not the best conditioning, relying on his talent and assuming it'll always let him win. That doesn't work in the NFL.

The way you talk about Henry gets me excited, but then I gotta pump the breaks cause he was a 4th rd pick and our  4th pick in the 4th at that. But let's hope lol

Everyone had a late 3rd round grade on him, in the deepest DT class in the last 5 years and perhaps more. Henry is raw and plays inconsistent, but when he turn it on, he's a real freak. His game against Florida remains one of the most dominating performances I've seen from a DT this year.

Don't forget he is coming from a loaded draft for defensive tackles. Some have bigger names for various reasons. Not only that but he recently this yr found his obsession to be the fastest and strongest at his position. So he is definitely getting stronger and more explosive. Especially with the more advanced training and nutrition he will learn in the nfl. Especially  with the emphasis Harbs is placing on nutrition and players getting in their best shape. He ran a 4.97/5.0 flat with a hamstring that caused him to consider not playing at the combine. He should of run again at his pro day. He is seriously capable of 4.85-4.9!! He is already a gym fanatic. After working with ravens trainers/nutritionists and his teammates like Ben Watson for a while he is going to be a total freak!! This is a deep draft at the position. He got lost in the shuffle a little of players that have bigger names for various reasons. Like the Alabama tandem, weightlifting champ Billings and some hyped up and refined players with strong supporting casts. But when you actually break down raw skills that will translate to the nfl to be molded and coached up; Will Henry has a freakish rare combo of explosion, flexibility/leverage, closing burst, power and heavy hands. He changes direction very well to. Only player with a more impressive cocktail of raw skills at his position is Nkemdiche who is roided up. With time training and learning with ravens trainers and teammates he is going to be as impressive a specimen as Nkemdiche or anybody. He is easily capable of a 4.80 40 and 35 reps,7.3 3cone. He is athletic  enough to play rush olb yet has shown he can hold up when asked to 2gap. Not many penetrating tackles front that kind of raw skills. He is a rare specimen that walked under the radar in a very deep class. He has rare skills to work with  And a fanatical obsession to be the strongest fastest and best at his position. He and jernigan will stress Olines before you even throw the edge rushers Kufusi and Dumervil at them and blitz Correa. Ravens have a really good cocktail of qb pressure/blitz cocktails

I think Timmy's light bulb came on late last season and now sees the player he wants to be. Hard work all day..... Lets go #99!

We need Jernigan to break out and I expect him to, especially if we do actually transition to more of a 4-3. A one gap system with him playing inside more would really allow him to breakout. Williams, Jernigan, Davis and Henry has me really excited about our DT's.

Yeah........gonna have to see it. Possibly being in better shape is not enough.

He did have 4 sacks each of his first two years, but he definitely isn't gonna make us forget Haloti Ngata.

Ironic florida really recruited him heavily. He was on Florida's list of most underrated athletes in the country. His game agsinst Michigan state was dominant as well. He trashed double team blocks and displayed lb closing burst as well as edge rusher explosion, flexibility, bend and leverage. He bullrushed Conklin as well. Did not put Conklin on skates but Conklin was treading water to hold his spot yet was getting pushed around a little. With some technique coaching and he finishes tweaking his body he is going to be a monster that runs a 4.8 or better,35reps and sub 7.3 3cone. With a top notch work ethic and desire to be fastest and strongest in the game.

I cannot find a single thing on Florida recruiting him.

Not going to.lol. I Know somebody from florida that helps with recruiting and stuff. I actually did not find out about It til after ravens drafted him. Anyways I met Riley Cooper through her.  It would of been totally cool if ravens signed him. He could  be a raven yet however.

Yes but he was inconsistent against MSU. He was good not great for the most part of the game, and for the last 5-10 snaps he was unblockable.

Uh, so they wanted him, but didn't extend a single visit or offer? I mean, he was getting offers from like Iowa and Hawaii, so there's no way he turns down a visit from an SEC school
