[News] NFL Adopts New Instant Replay Rules

12 posts in this topic

The Ravens wanted to make every play reviewable except for eight judgement calls. The NFL reorganized the rules to better clarify plays that can and cannot be challenged, but only added game administration items to the list of things that can be reviewed.

I think the Ravens have it right. The list should be a short list of what is not reviewable instead of what is. It will eventually be changed. There is just something about not getting a call right when the capability to do so is there that irks people.

These new rules appear to be as clear as mud.

I'm with you on this one. This clarifies nothing. Or at best, little to nothing.

It'll never get to that point.

For starters, you can immediately remove all "judgment calls" from consideration... they'll never be review-able, nor should they. Basically, any of your standard penalties that require judgment (PI, holding, personal fouls, etc.) won't ever be touched.

If it were me, I'd go almost the exact opposite direction. I'd almost scale back replay to a very small number of calls available, and I'd go back to the way it should be... it should only be changed if its blatantly obvious. The fact that on a weekly basis we can see plays on a replay that even two people sitting in the same room can't agree on what the proper call should be is verification enough of why expanding replay is a terrible idea. This notion that instant replay makes sure that we get 100% accuracy in the sport has never been practical nor proven.

Based on the direction I'm seeing this going and how complicated the rule book is, I'd be much more inclined to scrap replay entirely than I would be to expand on it.

I agree. I think plays that the fans can see are wrong calls should somehow be made right. Too many calls are impacting the game in negative ways. Like coach Harbaugh says it impacts the integrity of the game.

Or get officials who can do the job right in the first place. I get so upset with these officials sometimes.

That is still a lot to remember and make a judgement whether to throw the challenge flag before the ball is snapped or the play clock winds down. It is getting very complicated.

Not sure if it requires a challenge flag. A lot of these new changes are "administrative", so I believe the league office can buzz down to the officials and have them review certain things without a coach throwing a flag for it.

At least, that's how it should be. It shouldn't require a coach to throw a flag because an official marks off a penalty incorrectly.

Proper down and game clock sound like more of New England issues and their fans sabotaging the game.

I used to feel that way a lot too.  I still get mad when refs blow a call but not so much these days.  I changed the way I look at the game.  I now feel that if it’s a close call, like a receiver bobbling a catch or barely getting two feet inbounds, that it’s up to the player to make the legitimacy of the play obvious to the ref.  The closer the receiver makes his play to the edge the more likely the pass will be ruled incomplete.  So, in a way, it’s partly the player’s fault if the call goes against him if he has played too close to the edge.
