[News] Ravens Sign Veteran Cornerback Jerraud Powers

52 posts in this topic

Good. We need some competition and depth at CB. I trust the Ravens brass took a long look at who was out there and decided Powers best fit our system. Not a big interception guy, but a solid player. Wonder if Leslie Frazier had a hand in picking him up?

The competition is going to be insane at the CB position, we have a lot on the roster so far.....

I like the move. We need young veterans that have game experience to be playing alongside rookies with talent. Great formula.

Competition is the theme for this year. Nothing is given you gotta earn your spot. Great way to keep your players hungry and motivated this year. Absolutely love how the team is handling this offseason.

I would love Canady and Julian Wilson to make it both bring the size i like in CB's with Wilson being 6-2 and Canady at 6-1....Young brings the swag and nasty with his game, Davis looked solid before he went down....Powell not sure of only because i watched the AZ secondary get torched a lot last year, i think BB had a 500 yard game against them....And Arrington has to have a superman camp or i see him gone.....JMO.....

So Powers has been in the league 8 yrs already and pretty experienced and most importantly very durable. We can't say that of our existing corps of CBs. Hopefully by the end of TC, the best players shine through and we have a cast of the best CBs on the 53. Does anybody have any info on this guy? Videos, etc.?

i like the move and i like the fact that leslie frazier has the opportunity to improve the secondary with his solid background as a secondary coach and def coord.

Always good to have competition and depth at any position and Powers seems like a solid guy however, it depends on for how much. Both Arizona and the colts have a better CB now that he's gone I would imagine, otherwise he would still be there so I'm not thinking he's any more than depth at this point. Also, can we get a CB over 6' for gosh sakes??

Good 6'+ CB's aren't just floating around, they're treasured commodities in today's NFL. Powers is a really solid player, best CB who was on the open market regardless of size. Started outside on a very good Cardinals defense. Size isn't everything, Brandon Browner is 6'4 and can't play a lick anymore, I'll take the most technically skilled and fundamentally sound player every day of the week.

isnt this the guy opposite patrick peterson that gets picked on and beat constantly? I hate signing all these weak basic corners

Powers is will help our rookie draft pick learn how to play the position.  He might not be the best CB in the league, but experience matters, too.

Ravens are proving that they are on a mission, can't wait to see these guys in action.

Don't get too hyped up like i did last year; it's a hard let down. Just looked at PFF top 101 players: Ravens - 1 (Yanda - God bless him), Pats 7, Bengals 5 & Steelers 4. Hope we picked right in the draft this year - lot of misses lately.

Finally, a corner move i can like.
This kid is plenty capable, i feel good about having him around.
Starting opposite Patrick Peterson is tough.

Colts have Vontae Davis and who?

Arizona has no idea who they're going to replace Powers with, except maybe Tyrann, but he's pretty committed to playing safety.

its not that hard to look up peoples' depth charts.

Excellent acquisition and have been impressed by his play throughout his career. He will be asked to be extended after this year. He has more than held his own.

The Ravens have had good luck with guys like this.

Josh Wilson was an average corner in Seattle that was traded Baltimore, became a quality starter and earned a big contract in Washington.
Cary Williams was signed off of the Titans squad, was a starter for two years and left to get paid a lot of money to play in Philadelphia.
Corey Graham was only considered a special teams player in Chicago, but when Webb got injured Graham took over and he played an important part in the Ravens beating Denver in the playoffs. Then he left to play for Buffalo.

Let's hope Powers is another average corner that can become a star in Baltimore.

On a side note, I can't believe there is no mention of the Ravens releasing Marlon Brown, defensive end Nordly Capi, safety Nick Perry, and defensive back Jermaine Whitehead, to make room for Powers and draft picks Stanley, Kaufusi, and Reynolds. I know a lot of people like Brown, but I think it's time for the team to move on without him. I am actually more surprised the team let go of Perry before the preseason started.

We are on a mission this offseason and it all started with the decision to change the Field, Expanding the Castle making a room just for injury prevention, Hiring an excellent trainer and coaches, An exciting FA and at the very least a Solid draft.

Now the first step in the 2nd half of the Offseason has been made and I absolutely love the signing, he will come in and compete from day one. I see him winning the Slot position and upgrading our already impressive secondary. One of the best things is he will allow our rookies to get a year of learning before being thrown out into the battle.

Now call me crazy or for thinking we have made some amazing moves and yes it would of been nice to keep K.O or sign Ramsey and Jack. But I'm extremely happy with the way our offseason has went and think its the most successful one we have had in a long time, in every aspect of the game.

Oh by the way....I heard Ray Lewis was looking for a job and personally I think Assistant LB coach sounds real nice for right now, Coaching up our guys every day would be a dream come true..

This guy appears to be better than all those guys.

He might easily be back later. Or, if he isn't, he probably didn't show enough development on the PS... We don't know - they do :)

I like this signing. I give Ozzie credit.....he said, I am not done yet" and he meant it. Playing CB at the NFL level is one of the most difficult positions to learn. This guy has NFL game experience under his belt and (IMHO) it seems like he held his own.
