2016 Draft a Franchise: Discussion Thread

Ya'll are awful at this not discussing players that are still available thing. I'm an outsider this year and not paying too much attention, but it's so easy to tell who you guys are talking about.

We're following the letter of the law, if not the intention.   But seriously, it's hard to talk about any draft in a vacuum of just a couple of picks.  It'll be easier as the draft progresses.  But the early picks get the most conversation and the least context.

Bortles.  I was talking about Blake Bortles.

I had him higher than Carr and Mariotta, personally.  That may be subjective.  But yeah, the way he fed two good receivers enough for both to put up legit WR1 numbers all year, usually from his back, really impressed me.

I had him higher than Mariotta but Carr ranked a bit higher for me. Bortles is a bit of a risk taker that got bailed out by his receivers at times, but he has a lot of upside and things to like about him. He was someone I had my eye on, hoping he'd fall just a little further.

Just by the numbers I definitely think the interceptions were a problem.  I'm believing a lot of that, and the sacks, will be helped out by the offensive line improving.  But just head-to-head,  outside of their teams, I like him better than Carr.

In 2014 I drafted Bortles 227th overall (8th round), now he's a top 15 pick.

He only turned 24 last month.  I prefer Carr a bit more due to the consistency, but Bortles is not a bad young guy to gamble on.

Yep, I'll be picking 30th.  Please leave me some bread crumbs...

Look at this way, you'll get two top non-QB (and pass rusher) players.  You'll have to roll the dice on young project QB or take a veteran stop-gap.

Was planning to go more proven the whole time with my pick but the run on young made me good with this. I was not a huge fan of Winston when he came out but he proved me wrong quickly, love his attitude (thought it was brash at the time of draft) and competitive drive. Expecting a good year from him this year

The run on QB is back on.  Six straight QBs after alternating QB-Pass Rusher for six picks.

I'm actually sitting on him in my office's dynasty league.  I'm pretty much making the same bets you describe.

Basically it's a case of Carr having the better mind and Bortles having the more raw talent. Carr will read defenses better and get the ball out quicker, and have more consistency. Bortles will sometimes make horrible judgements and frustrate people, but when he gets hot he can just take over a game in a way Carr can't. So it's safe bet vs upside.

I see the same things, but I think there's two big factors for why that is:  one is the time Bortles doesn't get to make a decision.  Dude gets rushed a lot.  I'm not allowed to mention the other reason yet.  If Bortles had Carr's support, I think he'd be a safe bet.

Can't say I expected that.

So the Shufflers are gonna need a QB for weeks 1-4.

But he gets to meet Giselle.  Worth it.

It wasn't an easy decision, but if I was trying to build a franchise, I'd have to go with Taylor over the other QBs available. He's in his prime, will likely get better, and doesn't have a long history of injuries like a certain other qb.

He went 15th so moved up a spot lol. Was looking at a couple QBs potentially over Donald but the only one I was really considering was Carr who already had went. But yeah you all know how I feel about Donald.

Especially if you're running a spread. He'd actually be very good in San Fran with Kelly

This is probably a searing hot take, but am I the only one who doesn't expect Taylor to be a starter – at least for a good team – by the time 2018-19 comes around? I feel like he's kind of a stop-gap for Buffalo. He was good at times, but I just don't see franchise potential for him

Well, he got them over 3,500 total yards and ranked in the top ten QBs on PFF. I think he's definitely capable of being a long term starter in the NFL.

I tend to be in that boat. Like him a lot but tend to view him as a journeymen type of guy who will help teams have a chance if they have a gap at the position. I was impressed early on by him and he has all the tools, he really can sling it
