My Current Guess At The Ravens 53-Man Roster (Merged)

524 posts in this topic

I know this will not be popular around here, but it's early and every prediction (whether that is 'conservative' or far-fetched) is equally distant from the final picture.

OFFENSE (24)
QB (2): Flacco, Mallett
RB (3): Allen, Dixon, West
FB (1): Jusczyck
WR (7): Smith Sr, Aiken, Perriman, Wallace, Butler, Moore, Waller
TE (3): Watson, Gillmore, Williams
T (4): Stanley, Lewis, Wagner, Hurst
G (3): Yanda, Jensen, Urschel
C (1): Zuttah

DEFENSE (26)
1/3 T (3): Williams, Davis, Henry
3/5 T (4): Guy, Jernigan, Urban, Kaufusi
DE/OLB (5): Suggs, Dumervil, Smith, Judon, Correa
ILB (4): Mosley, Orr, McClellan, Brown
CB (6): Smith, Davis, Wright, Canady, Young, Powers
S (4): Webb, Weddle, Brooks, Levine

ST (3)
K (1): Tucker
P (1): Koch
LS (1): Cox

PR/KR: Moore/Dixon

Practice Squad/Injury reserve
Michael Campanaro, WR (IR)
Dennis Pitta, TE (IR/PUP)
Kapron Lewis-Moore, DE (IR)
Matt Skura, C
De'Ondre Wesley, G/T
Vladimir Ducasse, G
Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB
Victor Ochi, OLB
Daniel Brown, WR
Keenan Reynolds, WR
Patrick Onwuasor, ILB
Julian Wilson, CB

[Nick Boyle, TE and Matt Elam, S are suspended]

My take is:
1)I don't believe the Ravens, who badly needed defensive playmakers, drafted an OT if they weren't sure they couldn't start him day 1. We have to consider that two QBs went overdrafted at #1 and #2, which leaves us with one of the 5 highest rated prospects in the draft. For what we know Stanley could have even been a top 3, at this point. This leaves us with a new starting LT, while our former is unable to switch position; Monroe is too soft and injury prone to play G. Thus, he's a waste of money.
Also, I don't believe our #1 pick is going to play out of position, not even for 1 year. Not only he doesn't fit inside because of his style (Tunsil would've been better in this case) but Harbaugh also made it pretty clear: "have you ever seen him playing inside? no".
The 4,4M that we retain by cutting him now are much needed, as we must extend B.Williams and try to keep Wagner before the end of the season.
2)Same goes for Forsett. It's 2,3M savings for a guy who was never meant to be a bell cow. In such a crowded backfield, with RBs that complement each others well, that's a too high price to ignore. Kendrick Lewis is in the same situation: crowded position, below average play,  and almost 1M savings.
3) I don't get why everybody keeps listing Reynolds within the top 53 players on the roster. There's no way he can contribute after switching to a completely new position, nor he will help as a gunner or in any way on ST, which Waller will.

@Italian Raven here are my comments so I don't have to quote the entire thing.

1.  Waller officially moved to TE, so I doubt he factors into the WR conversation.  Of course, you can just move him to TE and it doesn't change anything.  I like him, but I don't think he has much of a shot as it currently stands.

2.  Pitta probably isn't going on PUP.  They'll let him practice and see if he can do it.  The only way he ends up on IR again is if he has a setback or actually hurts himself.

3.  Matt Elam isn't suspended.

4.  It's obviously early, but reports from OTAs have Forsett as getting nearly all of the reps with the 1s with no one even coming close.  I saw that some of the vet or obvious starters were sitting out a portion of one of the practices, and Forsett was among them.  Things can chance, but I don't think it's a money decision with him.

5.  For me at least, Reynolds makes the 53 because they're not willing to risk him to waivers.  There was a lot of obvious excitement over that pick.  Unless he flat out can't play, he'll likely make it.  Sure, he might be a weekly inactive, but I still see him on the 53 in most cases.  He might end up being the primary returner.

DL (7): Timmy Jernigan, Brandon Williams, Carl Davis, Willie Henry, Brent Urban, Lawerence Guy, Bronson Kaufusi

ILB (4):  C.J. Mosley, Kamalei Correa, Zachery Orr, Albert McClellan

S (5): Eric Weddle, Lardarius Webb, Kendrick Lewis, Terrance Brooks, Anthony Levine

ST (3): Justin Tucker, Sam Koch, Morgan Cox

Of course this is very early and this will change once injuries happen (sadly), players I had on the bubble to make the roster were players such as Terrance West, Trent Richardson, Jeremy Butler, Michael Campanaro, Darren Waller, VIctor Ochi, and Matt Elam. West has been reported to be in excellent shape which means we may stash an extra running back. I didn't list Campanaro because if this is his 3rd straight season with injuries in the offseason like it has started then he cannot be reliable for this team. Which gives 6th round pick Keenan Reynolds the edge as long as he is healthy. I could also see Jeremy Butler exploding onto the scene because he is in his 3rd season where wide receivers sometimes explode onto the scene.

TIght end could go several ways. Pitta is reliable and has proven to produce at the NFL level. We will see how his hip reacts in training camp. If it is questionable I think Waller has the edge because of his high upside being 6'6 and running a 4.40. The Ravens may start playing Za'Darius Smith at DE this season instead of OLB which may give the DL one less job to give and one more to OLB. I have us keeping Canaday for extra depth at the position we usually have injuries at.

I see us trying to stash away a couple of these players but I think their talent will be too high for other teams to pass up. There will be a lot of people screaming death threats at the front office once cuts begin. Way early and many things can still happen but that is my best guess as of now.

3

Canaday won't make the team. Just saying.. ( he's awful)

1. Yeah, Waller is a hybrid kinda player, like Funchess.. so it's hard to link him as a TE when he's likely getting most of the reps in the slot. And as you also say, it doesn't really matter into the equation.
2. do you think he's going to be in the final 53? I'm not sure he can fully heal as the season begins and we've seen many times some of our players ending up in the IR without a serious reason.. we could, perhaps, speculate about him not being ready and the team camuflages this with a "hamstring" (or whatever) kind of excuse just in order to keep him around but without having him counting against the '53'.
3. I also didn't know a brick bout Elam but I swear I read it before.. I'm looking for it in my google history and editing the comment.
4. of course just speculation.. it's way too early to predict eventual cuts. We cut Jacoby Jones for a mere 700k when he was our #3 WR and starting KR.. now we are 7-8M under the cap with Williams, Wagner and Tucker to extend.. I wouldn't be surprised if we cut Forsett.
5. I wouldn't know how to use him, seriously. You keep a #7 WR to play only short routes when another gets hurt? He can't be any better than a Givens or Campanaro.. also, he can't play ST but still take the spot of someone who can; we would have to change the gunner and likely see Waller go if let in the PS. I think he has a bigger market value than Raynolds.

1. It has already been said that Waller has bulked to play the TE position, but if anything he will be kept mainly for ST this season.

2. For Pitta, I don't think they waste time trying to put him on the PUP list.

3. If Elam was suspended we would have heard it from the team by now, so I doubt that's true.

4. One reason I think Forsett still makes the team is because without him we don't have a true veteran presence at the RB position. You would be left with a second year RB, rookie, and a RB believed to be immature in West.

5. Reynolds is actually working at being a returner. So if he picks it up fast enough that could be his way onto the roster. I don't even think he would make it to the PS, he would be picked up before that.

Any proof of this? You don't use a 6th round pick on a guy you don't think will make the team. If he shows any upside at all I think they keep him.

Elam is officially suspended one game, unless he won an appeal. Happened in October while he was on IR

That he was, but he served it while he was on IR.  He essentially lost pay and that was it.

1.  It sounds like Waller is playing exclusively TE though.  I get the ST value, but he also has an uphill battle with Pitta now in front of him.

2.  I do think Pitta will be on the 53 if he's healthy enough to play.  I don't think it's any sure thing of course, but the only way he's going on IR is if he's actually hurt and can't play.  If the comeback attempt fails and he gets hurt again or suffers a setback, he'll probably just retire and stick around the organization in some capacity,

3.  See above post of Elam.  He served the suspension already despite being on IR.

4.  I wouldn't be surprised.  I just don't think it's plausible.  If he is cut, it's simply because he was outplayed.  We're at the point where the money and cap is of little consequence.

5.  For Reynolds, it's not really a matter of him being better.  It's a matter of the team not wanting to lose him, which I assume is the case based on all of the comments they've had on him since he's been drafted.  In all reality, if I had to guess, he probably makes the team and only sees the active roster a few times throughout the year.  I'd think his only real shot to seeing the active 46 is to win the returner job.  He might not be a gunner necessarily, but he does have ST value, or at least that's the hope.  To me, he either makes it or gets the phantom IR, which I hate.

@rmw10

We'll be back at it in few weeks/months I guess.

My biggest wonder is why asking a guy to gain weight and apparently switch position if he has to be the 4th on the depth chart, or even 5th (assuming both Pitta and Boyle are back), then end up on the PS and get scooped by another team. I just don't find a sense in this nor a reason for the team wanting to keep the most unexperienced guy in a position we're extremely stacked at. Idk.. we'll find it out :D

For sure.  Still plenty of time to go and injuries (Perriman...) will always change the scope of things.

I think the ability for Waller to play TE makes him a bit more versatile. He can still line up at WR and he's a very good special teams player. I had a hard time trying to find a roster spot for him as well and it mainly depended upon Dennis Pitta not being able to play. He's defying the odds right now and I am really pulling for him to make it back. If he does, then the only way Waller makes it is at the expense of another WR. That group already has a lot of competition so it will really come down to health and performance.

If I'm the Ravens do I keep Waller at the expense of Daniel Brown, Chris Matthews, Michael Campanaro, or even Jeremy Butler? The first two I would say yes, Camp if he's healthy might be a tough call, and the team seems to love Butler.

One thing is for sure, it will be an interesting pre season and I bet a lot of other teams will be watching to see which players the Ravens cut. Somebody is going to be able to scoop up some good depth.

Well, looks like Eugene Monroe is off the roster. Thought that if that move was to happen it would be at some point after the June 1st time frame so that the dead money hit can be spread out over two years and at a lesser impact overall. The only thing the Ravens were waiting for was medical clearance for him to be able to play. Seems like there is enough interest in him to land a job elsewhere. It is a shame he kept getting hurt here in Baltimore because when he was healthy he was a very solid to good LT.

I had him making my final roster and had Alex Lewis as a bubble guy for one of the last roster spots. Looks like he's got a much better shot of making the 53 man now.

I think Forsett is a lock to make the team. We have a lot of young, promising talents at the position and Ozzies comments on Forsett having a hand in developing several outstanding backs still stick out to me (Lynch, Foster, etc..). His value to the staff goes beyond on field play. Plus his reps indicate he's the clubhouse leader so far this offseason.

I think Pittas a lock too. They've stuck with him this long, and all reports indicate he looks like his old self. Barring an injury or unforeseen complication, I think he's in. Chemistry with Joe, and his 3rd down/red zone presence are something that can be counted on. Again, his first team reps seem to indicate he's on top or near the top of the depth chart. I think he ends up leading a very productive group in catches, TDs and yards.

Reynolds inclusion will be dependent entirely on Campanaro. Slot guys with return ability... With roster spots at the skill positions at a premium I just can't see both making the team. Camp has the edge with experience and having proven he can perform when healthy, but every day that Reynolds plays while Camp sits out that edge is disappearing. Harbs seems to love Camp as he continues to get the benefit of the doubt, but I can't see the team risking losing Keenan if Camp doesn't get an extensive run of health during TC. If he does expect Reynolds to get a mysterious injury around the 4th preseason game.

Canady I initially thought was a PS lock, but he's apparently stood out as a playmaker in practice. He could push someone off the roster.

Weve taken a very high number of safeties recently. With Webb and Weddle likely to lock down the starting spots and play a majority of the snaps, I don't see the trend continuing. I could see only keeping 4, but definitely no more than 5. So, Elam, Brooks, Lewis, and Levine are fighting for 2-3 spots. Someone excelling in that S/LB hybrid role could be a path to making the roster. ST ability should also play a big part here since back up playing time likely scarce which could give Levine an edge over Elam/Brooks.

Correa playing ILB could spell the end of Arthur Brown, and give a guy like Ochi a path to making the team... But that's based on potential. Apparently Ochi hasn't shown much at all. Right now I think Orr, McLellan and even Brennan Beyer are ahead of Brown due to versatility.

Jensens, Urschels, and Lewis' ability to play multiple positions along the line could lead to comfort in taking only 8 OL which could open a spot at another position for a bubble player with potential.

Besides QB I think the position(s) with the most clarity is DL. I would say with almost 100% certainty we take 7 guys: NT (2) Williams, Davis. DT (2) Jernigan, Henry. DE (3) Guy, Urban, Kaufusi. Talented, deep, versatile but young. Can't see us taking more or less, or anyone threatening to shake it up so long as the group stays injury free. KLM could be the first one in if there's an injury, but I think he's very far behind anyone in that group.

I think it's a guarantee we take all 4 TEs. Unfortunate for Waller. I think he's a PS candidate.

T Rich will not end up making the team. It was already a steep climb, and hes done nothing but fall further behind. Juice's presence will make it hard for West or Taliaferro to make this team unless they find a spot from another position. Don't know eithers PS eligibility but both could be candidates (though id be shocked if both made it through waivers). Maybe Tali gets IR designation with eyes on him having a role next year when Forsett departs. West imo is too similar to Buck and Dixon to have a role now or in the future.

My takes on some popular roster questions.

I only regret that there is no place for Darren Waller, but I liked that he managed to include T West. I would probably have changed K Lewis for Elam or Canady.

Right now it sounds like Lewis is squarely the 3rd S.  He's been running consistently with team 2 while Elam and Brooks rotate in along side him.

Right, but I really don't like Lewis. There's honestly not many players (actually only him now that Marlon Brown is gone) that I don't like in the roster, but I rellay don't want him back this season.

I still remember his more than stupid charge on Antonio Brown that got the Steelers a PI and then a score...

There's a difference between not liking a guy and assessing his actual chances.

I know, and you're right he seems to have a legit chance of making the 53, I just express my opinion that I would be disappointed considering guys like Waller, West, or Matthews that have shown more thus far have slimmer chances.

Just some updated thoughts by position.  Not really a prediction, but how things may stand right now.

Quarterback:

Locks: Joe Flacco, Ryan Mallett
Bubble:
Out: Josh Johnson, Jerrod Johnson

Despite some shaky reports on Mallett in minicamp, he's a lock assuming health.  He's been the unquestioned #1 with Joe still on the mend.

Running Back:

Locks: Justin Forsett, Buck Allen, Kenneth Dixon
Bubble: Kyle Juszczyk, Terrance West, Lorenzo Taliaferro
Out: Trent Richardson

I'm not one that believes Forsett is in any danger.  When the veterans and starters were given off in minicamps, Forsett was among that group.  If he was in a fight, he's not getting any time off the field.  The real question here is if we can carry 3 or 4.  If 4, it sounds like West has the edge after a great minicamp.  I'm still of the believer that Juice will make it, but is no guarantee.  Thus, the bubble designation

Wide Receiver:

Locks: Steve Smith, Kamar Aiken, Mike Wallace, Breshad Perriman, Chris Moore
Bubble: Keenan Reynolds, Jeremy Butler, Chris Matthews, Michael Campanaro
Out: Kaelin Clay

It'll be a nice battle once again for the back end of the WR depth chart.  There might be 1 or 2 spots for 4 guys.  I think the edge would go to Reynolds as a draft pick and with how much they seem to love him, but don't overlook guys like Butler and Matthews, either.  Clay is firmly an out for me unless someone completely falters in the return game.

Tight End:

Locks: Crockett Gillmore, Ben Watson, Maxx Williams
Bubble: Dennis Pitta, Darren Waller
Out: Daniel Brown, Nick Boyle (suspended)

Pitta is only on the bubble due to health concerns.  If he makes it through TC and preseason unscathed, I think he's a lock.  Waller could make a push based on ST ability, but he's in a very tight spot.

Offensive Line:

Locks: Ronnie Stanley, John Urschel, Jeremy Zuttah, Marshal Yanda, Rick Wagner, Ryan Jensen, Alex Lewis
Bubble: James Hurst, De'Ondre Wesley, Vlad Ducasse, Matt Skura, Jarrell Broxton
Out: Anthony Fabiano, Stephane Nembot, Blaine Clausell

OL could be interesting with an 8th and maybe a 8th spot up for grabs.  There isn't a true LT backup in the locks, so Hurst looks to be in a good spot right now, unfortunately.  Don't overlook Wesley in the race though.  Ducasse could be a sneaky roster entry just based on veteran status, but I'd think we might opt to use a roster spot elsewhere.

Defensive Line:

Locks: Brandon Williams, Timmy Jernigan, Carl Davis, Lawrence Guy, Bronson Kaufusi, Willie Henry
Bubble: Brent Urban
Out: Kapron Lewis-Moore, Trevon Coley, Michael Pierce

Coming from a fan of Urban, I hate putting him on the bubble, but I think he's squarely there.  It's another case of a number's game.  His saving grace might be Kaufusi being a weekly inactive while he develops a bit.  I don't view him as a guy that's ready to play day 1.

Inside Linebacker:

Locks: CJ Mosley, Zach Orr, Albert McClellan
Bubble: Arthur Brown, Chris Carter, Brennen Beyer, Cavellis Luckett, Patrick Onwuasor
Out:

I'm not sure there's a more open battle at this juncture.  The 4th ILB spot could go to any or none of the bubble guys.  It might be someone off the roster.  It might be Correa.  It might be one of them.  It's a giant mystery right now.

Outside Linebacker:

Locks: Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Za'Darius Smith, Kamalei Correa, Matt Judon
Bubble: Victor Ochi
Out: Mario Ojemudia

I have Judon as a lock solely for potential.  The team wanted pass rush and they did what they could to bolster that, and I doubt they'd give up on someone like that so soon.  Ochi could factor in with a nice camp, but that obviously remains to be seen.

Cornerback:

In: Jimmy Smith, Shareece Wright, Jerraud Powers, Tavon Young
Bubble: Will Davis, Maurice Canady, Sheldon Price
Out: Kyle Arrington, Julian Wilson, Sam Brown, Jumal Rolle (injury)

The top 3 are settled assuming health, and Young is a no brainer based on draft status.  After that, any of the guys on the bubble could make it.  It sounds like Arrington had an awful minicamp and put himself firmly on the outs.

Safety:

In: Eric Weddle, Lardarius Webb, Kendrick Lewis
Bubble: Matt Elam, Terrence Brooks, Anthony Levine
Out:

Someone has to go, and I know there will be a ton of disappointment that it's not Lewis.  It sounds like he's firmly entrenched as safety #3 and rotated in with the first team when Weddle or Webb took a breather.  Elam and Brooks have been rotating in along side of Lewis on the second team.  Never count Levine out as one of the ST aces.

Special Teams:

In: Justin Tucker, Sam Koch, Morgan Cox
Bubble:
Out: Wil Lutz

Another year of no questions at this spot.

Guess I should reformat mine so that it is easier to look at quickly: PS = Practice Squad

7: OL: Eugene Monroe, Ronnie Stanley, Rick Wagner, Jeremy Zuttah, Marshal Yanda, Ryan Jensen, John Urschel (PS: 3: Alex Lewis, Matt Skura, Anthony Fabiano/Stephan Nembot/DeOndre Wesley)

Alex Lewis being a fourth rounder is not going to be cut.  He would not clear waivers and would be gone.  Ravens don't have a lot of players taken in the fourth round that are cut.  Since Urschel and Jensen can both play center for clearly less money, I see Zuttah as the odd man out.  With Urschel apparently being looked at as the starter at LG, you've either got to find room for Jensen or trade him or Zuttah outright, leaving Lewis as the swing guard.  Wesley will end up being our backup tackle along with..........Hurst.   However it is formatted, Lewis will not be risked in waivers by cutting him.

Additionally, if they cut or trade Jensen, Kubiak may be in the wings looking to grab him up.  That leaves you with a rookie left side if Zuttah is injured and they have to slide Urschel to Center.

You don't have to do anything with Jensen or Zuttah.  Jensen will be an interior backup.  Lewis will be a combination of a tackle and guard.  They're likely your 2 primary backups.  Hurst could factor in, but still, no need to cut or trade anyone.

@rmw10

Been too busy with summer semester in college to really pay attention to the battle this year, but what makes you say the following:

Juszczyk, Reynolds, Ochi, Will Davis, and Brooks being on the bubble? Just curious to hear if they haven't done well in camp or whatever.

There's a Juice thread hanging around, but I'll mention it in short here.  For Juice, I think it could simply be a number's game.  It depends how much they value his lead blocking.  I've maintained that he's still likely to make it, but no guarantee.  The number of TEs and RBs we have could make it tough.

I've also maintained that I think Reynolds makes it barring him being awful, but I won't classify him as a lock.  Nothing bad to report on him.  I just can't in good conscience consider him 100% in.

For Ochi, I'll never put a UDFA as a lock, especially this early.  He'll have to show at least something in camp for me to even consider him for the 53, but he's on the bubble simply because he's a pass rusher.

For Will Davis, I have him on the bubble because he hasn't really practiced yet.  We'll see where and how he plays once he gets back, but it's still early on him.

Brooks could be in some real danger.  Lewis is the 3rd S while Elam and Brooks have rotated in as the 4th alongside Lewis.  It sounds like it's been more Elam than Brooks.  Levine could have the ST edge, and I'm finding it hard to justify keeping 6.

I think Juice makes the roster. A fullback that can catch 40 balls and lead the way for our running backs is a lock in my eyes.

Reynolds is making plays so far this offseason. I'm hoping they go with him over Campanaro with his injury history. To me we can keep Campanaro but he is battling West who is looking solid and Pitta who is also looking solid.

Ochi will have to make plays to make the roster. I know everyone here was excited to get him but with how many OLB's we have he would have to make a lot of plays to make the team. And if he does I see Z. Smith playing more of a DE role which is his natural position and I wouldn't be against it.

Will Davis is a huge question mark. And it is a huge loss he is not on the field. It sounds like Canaday is making plays this offseason as a late round draft pick. And one would think you do not cut Tavon Young when he as been a back up slot cornerback behind Powers. It is a numbers game at cornerback if those two continue to play well.

Weddle, Webb, Lewis, and Levine are most likely the four safeties we go into the season with. I do not see us carrying more than that. Levine will be on the roster primarily for special teams. Cutting Lewis saves like 1 million but after the way Harbaugh was talking about him always being in the right place I think he is a solid player for us in a situation where Weddle or Webb go down. Plus he is a safety that can play more in the box.
