Red Star Black Dot players

28 posts in this topic

The Ravens have always had a system of giving red stars to players they really like and black dots to players they want to avoid. As the draft is right around the corner and this is another one of those yearly threads, who are some guys you think are red star or black dot players? Can talk about who the Ravens might have as those players or who you personally have.

I'll post mine later tonight

Anyone with a DV history gets the black dot - so Jalen Mills and Leonte Carroo to name a couple.

I think Jalen Ramsey is a red dot.  Leadership, passion, hardwork, and a good player.  That's a big reason why I believe he's #1 on our board.

I think Alexander would have a red star on the Ravens' board due to his film study habits.

Reading about his film study habits really impressed me about him

Carroo situation doesn't seem to be as clear as Mills situation but I can still see him as a black dot player.

Red Stars:
Reggie Ragland.  I'm not saying we draft him, but the front office seems to love talking to him.
Manny Alexander
Jalen Ramsey
Su'a Cravens
Tyler Matakevich?  I think we met with him.  He seems like a clubhouse guy we'd like.

Black dots:
Carroo and Mills, as already mentioned.
This makes me sad, but I think Noah Spence may be a black dot.  Personally don't agree, just a hunch.
I think Buckner is a black dot.  We've never even talked to him.
Myles Jack.... I think it's the knee.  Or maybe we never thought he'd fall to us.  But all the time we've spent on other LBs makes me wonder.

A guy out of left field that I think may have a red star would be Keanu Neal, S, Florida, just to mix it up a bit. I know we are traumatized by Florida safeties but to me Neal is similar to Joseph except he doesn't have a habit of leading with his head when laying someone out, he's got just as much power when hitting as Joseph - during the Alabama game he knocked Henry backwards which is a feat for anyone let alone a safety. I think Joseph's coverage skills have been way overblown by his interceptions at the start of the season. Neal isn't perfect in coverage but he has the athleticism to get much better there, like Joseph he is a SS though. Also he's known to be a high character guy off the field, so that's always a plus.

Another guy I think we have a red star on Elandon Roberts, ILB, Houston is supposedly an amazing leader, something I think we've been sorely missing since Ray retired.

Schobert from Wisconsin seems like he'd have a red star player since he has great instincts and he's that over achieving type of linebacker that the Ravens generally love.

Red star has to be Su'a Cravens for me. Love his tape and off the field he's got a great passion for the game:

Quote

Su’a desperately wanted to play football like Siaki, who’s five years older. When the day of Su’a’s first Pop Warner game finally arrived, his parents found him fully dressed – including pads and helmet – at 6:30 a.m., watching ESPN. The game was at 4:30 p.m.

I really hope so.  He seems so well-rounded; I think he could back up a few different spots for us right away.

We've met with Noah Spence twice so I don't think he's off our board.

i really do hope he's not off the board, he's got tremendous upside - i imagine that both of those meetings may have been centered on his efforts to combat addiction and insuring against relapse

Yep. One of the many reasons why he was a huge target of mine in the forum mock

Red Star - Su'a Cravens, Alex Mackensie,  Karl Joseph (despite the ACL), Ronnie Stanley (got a weird feeling we have him higher than most)
Black Dot - Anyone you could label as a "Cleveland Browns" type

Remember guys, not many red stars are given out. Each scout and occasionally a coach or two pick out 1 each.

Apparently every one of his opponents--the #1 receiver on the other team--he would watch their tape and find their weakness so he could expose it. He faced Will Fuller and held him to 7 yards because he knew he was a glorified one trick pony, so he used an aggressive bump and run to keep him from getting to the next level and pretty much shut down city. His only slight knock is turning his head with the ball in the air, but guess what? Look at Jimmy Smith's combine profile, they said the same exact thing and he was easily coached on getting his eyes on the ball. I am praying to god we land him at 36.

Black Dot: Nkemdiche, DeMarcus Robinson, anyone with DV (Caroo, Mills, Oakman), Michael Thomas (supposedly has poor work ethic for studying the playbook, received poor advice from Cris Carter)

Red Star: Lawson, Alexander, Ramsey, VH3--potentially anyone who studies the game like Ray and Ed did and shows leadership

Orange Country Register I believe. I can't find the exact one anymore, but I think Rand Getlin tweeted it out a while ago.

I don't have one person in particular this year who I like above everyone else(no DeAndre Carter or Aaron Donald for me) but there are a few prospects I do like

Kendall Fuller: As everyone on here should know

Braxton Miller: Raw but I trust his intangibles and the fact he made such a great leap in one year

Will Anthony: Probably an undrafted guy but I liked what I saw on film even if I don't know where to put him

Jarran Reed: I think he is probably the most underrated player in the draft. Won't turn into a great pass rusher but he is one rock solid player.

Andrew Billings: Adding him in here because he is being mocked in the 2nd round now where I think he would be an absolute steal. Another rock solid DL

If I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably have to take Reed although Fuller is right up there as well.

For my black dot player, it would have to be Nkemdiche, all the talent in the world but not much production and off field issues to boot.

My red star will be Adolphus Washington. If pound the table for him as I feel he's criminally underrated and could now be had potentially third round. He's going to cause a ton of interior disruption. I've been a fan of his. I like him better than Bennett last year.

Black dot for me is Jack. I've been saying way before these latest reports its got to be a huge concern for a team investing such a high pick on a player that hasn't even run yet.

I really have have no qualifications to comment on any character for these guys so I'm sticking with this.

Why are you giving those players a black dot? (other than Hack, which I can understand). Never heard anything bad about the character of Floyd, Apple, or Fuller.

Actually, not true, I heard that Apple can't cook, although this turned out to be false: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25568551/a-scout-says-eli-apples-cooking-skills-are-a-red-flag-in-the-nfl-draft
