DROY Candidates

57 posts in this topic

It's early because we don't even know who these guys will be playing for, but who do you think are the candidates?

I don't think it will be one of the high profile guys. I think ramsey will face a learning curve, Jack may be still recovering a bit, bosa will be a steady contributor but may not be a massive impact guy, and buckner will likely face leverage issues.

I think the sleepers for DROY in a vacuum will be sua cravens, Noah Spence, Sheldon rankins, and vh3.

Cravens could have multiple interceptions, forced fumbles, sacks, and TFL. it fits his skill set to expect a statline like that.

Noah Spence I think likely leads rookies in sacks, he's the most natural edge rusher in the draft, he has the explosion to post flashy numbers in the modern NFL.

Sheldon rankins I believe will lead all interior linemen in impact plays(sacks and TFL) because he is explosive and agile with quick hands. If he ends up at a place like Oakland or KC who have strong edge rushes then I think he gets his matchups and flourishes creating a lot of quick interior pressure.

Vh3 I think will lead rookies in PDs and ints. His ball skills and anticipation and explosiveness to close in on the ball are all too good. If he is on a team where he has a solid cb across from him then he will be a stud, if qbs try to look His way because he's a rookie then he will capitalize.

Who do you guys think are the droy candidates?

I agree, among the blue chippers, only Jack has a big shot at it imo.

VHIII and Cravens are the favourites. Cravens will depend on the system he works in, though.

Thought for sure you were going to mention Lawson. He's a fan-favorite on this forum it seems.

I think Floyd will have a decent shot if he lands on a team where he can just be a DPR. Sacks are a gaudy stat that the public eats up.

It's always been hard for secondary players to get DROtY recognition imo, since big plays can be harder to come by in coverage (I know, Marcus Peters just won, but it's still difficult).

I like Lawson a lot but I don't think he has a skill set that gains him big time recognition. I think Floyd is more than a DPR and he excels in coverage as well, but linebackers who cover and rush the passer are harder to get instant recognition. 14 sacks from a rookie will jump off the statline more than 6 sacks and 1 int and double digit PDs, the best performers rarely get the award and it tends to be more about flashy numbers which is why I think lawson and Floyd Wil be longshots, along with bosa.

I like Cravens, but ill throw out Floyd, Dodd, and a dark house Darron Lee

I think dodd comes on strong in Years 2 and 3 but as a rookie he could be quiet. He's still very raw.

I'm personally not a fan of darron lee but he is a speedy and diverse type of LB so if he has it between the ears then he has a valuable skill set, so I wouldn't rule it out

Yea predicting this is pretty tough when we don't know what team they will be on.  I keep getting more excited about Cravens...

Darron Lee reminds me of Arthur Brown. Too light to be anything more than a weak-side LB, and lacks the instincts/recognition to be in the right spot

Exactly how I feel. Although when it comes to linebackers I find it hard to gauge their instincts unless they really jump off the screen by making constant plays

Mosley was an example. He was always beating the offense to the point of attack against the run and always had a knack for meeting the target at the pass location. I don't see it with darron lee but like I said I always find it difficult to accurately gauge linebackers instincts. I think db's are much easier to gauge.

I'll throw out a name that no one picked yet.... William Jackson 3. Hes long, great ball skills, quick feet, and ran a 4.37 40. The one thing that impressed me a lot is his stats. He had 27 passes defended and 7ints. I think that was I one year! Or it was a misprint.

I like wj3 a lot but I think he's gonna face a very steep curve and may take 2 Years to really shine

Some bad instincts in this game. Dropping into zones w/o receivers nearby, taking some bad angles on tackles, gets blocked out easily on some plays, unnecessary hit on the punter.

First play of the game he gets burned by the slot receiver because he was looking in the backfield

Depending on the team he goes to, Correa might rack up enough sacks and tackles for losses that he'll be in the running. Also, among defensive linemen, Vernon Butler could end up in the running too.

I didn't watch it, but that sounds more like bad discipline than bad instincts.

good call on correa, he has the explosion for sure, vernon butler is another guy who i think might end up a late bloomer, he either lacks discipline after initial effort or he lacks vision, i cant tell which one yet.

Yes, I agree, Myles Jack will be rookie of the year.

If Bosa gets 12 sacks as a rookie he will be DROY. If Ramsey gets 7 interceptions he will be. If Myles Jack gets 130 tackles he will. Just depends on what team they are with and how fast they get out the gate.

The answer is obvious... whoever the Ravens draft lol. Seriously though the fist prospect I thought of was VH3 I feel like he will be able to come away with a lot of INTs this year.

I think Hargreaves could also get DROY but I think he will struggle at cornerback his first year transitioning to the NFL. If he started his rookie season at safety then that is a completely different story.

Our MLB didn't :(

Yeah maybe we should ask Aaron Donald who won it 2 years ago. Great player but Mosley actually played all 16 games. He got robbed.

Absolutely Robbed!  That was disappointing at best.

I don't know; 9 sacks from a rookie defensive tackle is extremely impressive. I wouldn't say robbed. Just a real tight race.
