[News] Eisenberg: 5 Outside-The-Box Questions For Ravens

How are the Ravens going to replace linebacker Daryl Smith?

Ideally, I would love to see the Ravens fill this void w/ Myles Jack.  But the recent news about his knee being a "time bomb"

must have everyone concerned who have him high on their big board.  Could be just a tactic to lower his draft value, but you

never know.  If Myles Jack is not an option, roll with Orr.  I envision the Ravens using their 3rd round picks on an ILB.

Too bad Boyle put the Ravens in a position where they had to sign a somewhat pricey free agent at tight end. In the event (however unlikely) Pita makes a real comeback it looks even worse. Watson is a class act and hopefully won't get lost in the shuffle.

I think Watson would have be signed regardless, especially w/ Gilmore having shoulder surgery.

Agreed. I think the knee concerns with Jack will turn us away from taking him on draft day.

I think a 3rd or 4th rounder will be drafted to compete with Orr and Art Brown for the job. I think they like the idea of youth and speed at ILB, and not to mention the fact that we play plenty of nickel and dime packages already, which makes having two ILBs on the field at the same time not as common as it used to be. In 5 or 6 DB packages, there's just no room for two ILBs on the field.

I think the Raven's will probably draft a LB in the 3rd to 5th round, especially with four picks in the 4th. If there is someone they consider really out-standing they would draft higher.( Jack would be tempting if still there at #6, but his injury concerns may scare a lot of teams away.) I also would assume that we will look hard at players released after the June 1st roster cuts. Ozzie is a master (usually) at finding good value veteran signings. I'm not sure which players are expected to be released, but I see us bringing in somebody, although I doubt it would be anyone flashy...

The only way I see a veteran signing later (probably August timeframe) is if we go into training camp and realize that guys like Brown, Orr and maybe a draft pick simply aren't good enough to play significant snaps.

Just think we are going to focus on emphasizing speed at that position, and its hard to see any veterans getting released that fit that mold.

The only way I see a veteran signing is for a early down run stopper. I don't see a veteran signing in the Daryl Smith mold, with the expectation of playing 90% of snaps.

I also think the elephant in the room for me is that I'm beginning to think that the coaching staff is going to give Elam and the other safeties (Brooks included) every opportunity to win significant playing time. If that's the case, you may see some frequent 3 safety looks, with Elam in the box in more of a ILB role. Ideally, had we still had Will Hill, I think this scenario could have played out tremendously, but alas that's not going to happen.

I see us shifting in the direction of more of a "best 11 guys" approach on defense, regardless of position. If that's the case, can easily see a ton of 5 and 6 DB looks, making the need for more than 1 ILB not that strong.

If we don't draft one between rounds 2-4 i could see us signing a post draft cut vet, because some teams will be selecting the top ILBer, that would could leave solid vets out....

I see this being a defense heavy draft... I don't see us taking an offensive player until we get to comp picks... way to much talent on the defensive side of the ball not to select some insurance for the future in this draft...

That's what I was thinking as well. Especially when we start talking about trading back, it makes a lot of sense.

If we don't trade back, expect heavy deffense early on, but if we do than I could see us mixing a bit with a 2nd round receiver...only immediate spot I think we really need to upgrade besides LT.

Personally hoping Tunsil or Ramsey falls to us. If not than I would vote on trading back even if Jack is there.

you're totally right.... i say we grab Leonard Floyd by trading back in the first round then trade up from the second round to the SEA 26th pick and get Derrick Henry... Draft Derrick Henry Ozzie... Draft Derrick Henry...draft Derrick Henry... I'm Calling it now he is the next hall of famer...

forget the needs of our team.... I thought Ozzie Newsome drafted Best Player.... i say if you want the best player you make moves to get him..... We Need a eddie George of the new era on the ravens. please ozzie hear ya boi out from the west coast... My Friend Derek Carr is killing with the raiders....Reggie Mckenzie came down here with Mark Davis and HIs coaching staff and got him in the second round...they haven't regretted since.... Derrick Henry is the best player in the draft over Ramsey, Jack, Elliot, Goff, Wentz, and Tunsil ....

Draft a Su'a Cravens or Deion Jones that can play in the box.

They have no answer for Eiffert, Barnidge and along comes Ladarius Green.

They sure as all hell know Brown isn't anything but a core ST and Orr is a complete unknown.

"Does the cornerback they’re probably going to take with the No. 36 overall pick immediately start?"

Whoa, John... have you heard something? :)

IDK.... I see us going in one of two ways at this point and assuming that we do not trade out of the position....FIRST:
1. Tunsil-T-Ole Miss
2. Will Jackson-CB-Utah
3. Bronson Kafusi- DE-BYU
4. Cyrus Jones-CB-Bamma
4. Malcolm Mitchell- WR- UGA
4. Travis Feeney - OLB -Wash
4. Yannick Ngakoue- OLB -MD
6. Kolby Listenbee- KR - TCU
6. Reggie Northrupp -ILB- FSU

or

1. Ramsey -CB -FSU (if he falls)
2. Shaq Lawson - DE - Clem (or Kevin Dodd- DE -CLEM whoever is at 36))
3. John Theus - T - UGA
4. Jaylon Smith - LB - ND (with all the 4th rounders we can grab and stash)
4. Malcolm Mitchell - WR -UGA
4. Travis Feeney - OLB - Wash
4. Stephen Weatherly - DE -Vandy
6. Kolby Listenbee - KR - TCU
6. Brandon Chubb - ILB - Wake

I really like Derrick Henry but over Ramsey, and Tunsil???? IDK... even Zeke seems to be more suited for the NFL...I think Henry will have success but look at the Bamma backs in the NFL... (Glenn Coffee, Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson, TJ Yeldon, Eddie Lacey). All decent but not the Todd Gurley / Adrian Peterson type that takes games over. The knock on all of them is that Nick Saban over worked them at Bamma and by the time they get to the NFL they are already mostly used up and lost a step (Richardson, Lacey, Ingram) or they are injury prone (Coffee and Yeldon)? IDK .... like I said... I really like Derrick Henry but I think both Ramsey and Tunsil will be super stars in this league!

@steelcityraven l actually like your second list way better than the first one. The first list is not exciting that much. ?

I think that Arthur Brown is ready to step in and play beside CJ... he is the athletic type who can cover the field and play the pass. The knock on him is he needed to add bulk and be more stout at the point of attack (v RUN)... he has begun to grow into his frame and looks different then he did when he came into this league.... plus now we are asking him to play a different role (as CJ is now doing what we drafted Arthur to do)...His athleticism beside CJ will be fun to watch... (and Z Orr can be our sub on run downs or goal line beside CJ)!

This would be ideal, but who knows whats happening with A.Brown. Honestly gave up on him last year..

Derrick Henry is not even close to being the best player in the draft. he isn't even the best running back in the draft. The guys is a thumper and just gets what is blocked for him. He isn't making anyone miss. I suggest that instead of looking at the highlights (highlights make everyone look like an HOFer) try watching an entire game. Some people don't even think he is the second best RB.

If Shaq or Dodd is there in RD2 catapult up to the podium

IMO, the biggest knock on A. Brown is from the neck up.  He seems as though he has all of the physical traits, but he's STILL having issues grasping the concept of the game/defense.

I wonder can Myles Jack slips into the 2nd round due to the knee concerns he has. Can this be possible? If that the case than it would be a great pick for Ozzie in the 2nd round but it very unlikely though.

"IF" he slips at all, it won't be past 10.  Bet on it.

not in my book...stats tell stories... the story i see is yeldon helps jags qb blake blortles play at his fullest with yeldon as his bell cow last year..leaving hurns and robinson as a possible top 5 WR tandem this year....as for E. Lacy when he first arrived he drastically had an impact with a balanced run and pass game as A. Rodgers made the defense play honest and A. Rod capitilzed on it with RB Eddie Lacy selected as the 2013 Offensive Rookie of The Year, the first Packer chosen for the award since RB John Brockington in 1971.... That same year i begged for ozzie to get lacy or even L. Murray ( rated 6th round) drafted by raiders who had great season of !,000 yard season last year and jumpstarted D. Carr for their fist win against th K.C.defense rated #1 with no rushing TD's on a primetime thursday night with a 93 yard tdburst from L. Murray (4.37 40yd dash) ... murray had another td for 20 yd or more...didn't draft him... last but not least Leveon Bell.... wow i wanted him the most and he ended up as a second round who had the best RB year 2014 and was the one i wanted the most ....all 2013 RB's ...regardless if we needed them with ray rice there before the mishaps we need to grab this best player and that means making moves to get em... Who did we grab in the first round and move up in the second to get? Matt elam and A. brown ....smh

btw Wasn't Matt elam SS. and A.Brown ILB drafted to replace our needs? didn't we lose Ray lewis and Ed reed and that following draft we draft in the first two rounds players in the same postion? 2013 NFL Draft after 2012 Superbowl Season

Derrick Henry is from Alabama....like C.J. Mosely.... Pro Bowler Rookie... that was actually the Best Player Available in 2014 draft....so if Ozzie did it once he can do it again...
