[News] Ravens Looking For The Best Mid-Round Wide Receiver

26 posts in this topic

Can't believe as he was describing all the different types of receivers that "slow" was a word used lol.

I am sure he is talking about the Mike Evans and Boldin type players. Very productive, yet, without type flight speed.

Interesting answer to the question about a Jerry Rice. I would have thought he say thats what we're aiming for. Instead he says who know's. LOL
I thought GM's would have a pretty good feel for the draft long before the draft. I also find it strange or alarming that you'd wait until 3 weeks out to set up your board. Most fans started the process of that before the seasons ink was dry. Sure it will change millions of times but the early bird catches the worm. Lastly why you tell your opponent where you plan to look for specific position. Thats seems dumb. To me if you can't get the first round right in terms of a receiver then why heighten the need and opportunity to acquire one until the 3rd and beyond. In a poker match the Ravens have gotten fleeced for a player(s) in multiple drafts. Ozzie usually plays it pretty cool. I said usually. DeCosta tends to leak information that they live to regret. Mums the word

Agreed but probably should've used the word possession instead of slow... I honestly had to double check the article

Well stocked are you joking? Out of those 5 Aiken was the only guy that actually played throughout 2015.

If there is a Jerry Rice the Ravens wont find him in round 6 if they want another Mellete then wait until RD 6.

I see the names of Doctson and Sheppard being mentioned but there's a couple of other guys I would add to the list:

Braxton Miller: Former QB that had to move to WR due to shoulder issues. Has all the good measureables and hands seem pretty good. Will need to be coached up, but what mid round players don't need this?

Charone Peake: Has some focus dropsies issues and had two knee injuries in college, but everything else you'd be looking for in a WR is there. May drop due to iffy hands and teams questioning his health but worth a shot in mid rounds I think.

Leonte Caroo: Got into some trouble in college with missing curfew and more alarmingly an assault that the alleged female victim did not press charges on. Doesn't have great speed and needs route work, but if his character checks out and his hands are for real he could be coached up.

Alonzo Russell: 6'4'' and around 200lbs. and while his combine 40 wasn't terrific he ran a 4.47 on his pro day. Reading his draft analysis he looks like a guy that needs to be ridden by coaches constantly and needs some structure around him to keep him motivated and to get the most out of him.

Guy to take a chance on in later rounds: Moritz Boehringer. Sure the talent he played against wasn't great so you take his production numbers with a grain of salt. But the size of this guy combined with his athletic ability has to make you take a look. Even if he's nothing more than a special teamer and kick returner that's something we can use. Most kick return guys are not 6'4'' and 230lbs.

If the guys stay healthy we got a good mix of possession (Steve Smith) and outside speed guys in Wallace and Perriman. Aiken is serviceable and if his hands get better might actually make it as a #2, but as is can be useful in the slot. I think Marlon Brown is on the bubble big time. He's done nothing but nose dive after his rookie campaign.

It's clear the Steelers have a blueprint for the receivers they want for the most part - smaller, speedier guys, the exception being Bryant although he can move when he needs to. To me, Joe seems to like wideouts that understand how to run routes well like Mason, Boldin, SSS, Camp. I'd look at Sheppard or Boyd early, later (although they might not be there) I'd look at Michael Thomas, Rashard Higgins, Carroo, Robinson. Very late, possibly as a UDFA, I'd look at Nelson Spruce out of Colorado.

malcolm mitchell -wr-uga -would be a top 10 pick if he stayed healthy ...he is that talented and we could land him in the 4th!

Some of these listed names aren't even any good. Any Steelers fan will tell you Wheaton sucks. Sanu getting supremely overpaid doesn't make him good. Cecil Shorts got tons of junk yards on a bad team as a de-facto #1 WR and then fell back to mediocrity. Martavis Bryant is addicted to drugs.

But point taken: there are some decent mid to late round WRs out there.

Kolby Listenbee in the 3rd, he won't last past that. He ran that time with two groins that needed surgery that he had. He is a higher round talent than where he will go due to those injuries. You can't teach speed and you can't teach twitch. Cincinnati was all over TCU pro day, everyone was there including Dalton who had private throwing sessions with those guys....

Please, just no.  I get there is massive upside with this guy but you have to look at the level of competition he had in the league he was playing in.  It literally looked like Mike Evans playing a High School team,,,just faster.  Now, if we were a team that was great at developing WRs (we aren't) then I would be all for it, we can barely draft a WR let alone develop one.  Sadly, I think he would be worth taking a shot on for the Steelers, they develop project WRs well.  Plus, he might not even get drafted, in that case I wouldn't care to bring him in but I would not use a pick on him.  Just my opinion though.

I would rather take a chance on WR Jakeem Grant  from Texas Tech.

Straight line track guy...pass until the later rounds. They got Wallace to do that. They need a like SSS or Boldin to carry the torch of toughness.

That's the issue. Fans do not have clue as to what it takes to stack a board. They see a guy that produces well in college and automatically assumes he's be great in the pros. Doesn't work like that. It's been plenty of All-Star players that never transition to the pros. Why? Different animal.Their evaluating EVERY player that declares for the NFL and not just the popular ones. So their could be a guy that no one knows about and we pick them. Did anyone really think we were going for C.J Mosley? I sure didn't. I was a little upset we did until I saw him play and I knew that pick was perfect. This guys has been doing it for years so I'm quite sure this isn't the first time they waited until April to stack their board. It's a business and business must run on a schedule. They have a schedule and they stick to it. They have a system and they stick to it. As far as giving information. It's a jedi mind trick lol. EVERYONE does it because they want teams to aboard their moves and go after someone they think the Ravens are getting. They do it on purpose haha. I've noticed that, especially during draft. They mislead the media and keep their information private. Do you really think Ozzie or even Steve would allow their information to be out? lol No Way!

Love Malcolm Mitchell and agree that he would be a steal (maybe the~ steal of the draft) if we landed him with one of those fourth round picks. I also think the defensive equivalent to Mitchell is OLB -Travis Feeney from Wash... injuries are the only reason both of these guys are not 1st rounders!

i think listenbee will be there in the 4th.... he is fast but not a great wr... i like him for a kr /pr guy ...with hopes that he can develop into a legit wr in a few years (he has the raw skills)

I like Sterling Sheppard but I don't think he makes it to round 3 I see him going in round 2.

Sadly I agree. But Sheppard in the 3rd would be perfect. As the first two rounds will be bigger needed positions. And positions that the Ravens don't regularly strike out on.
