Matt Elam

89 posts in this topic

All of last offseason all the coaches were going out of their way to complement Matt Elam saying that he was working harder than ever, and praising how well his offseason was going. I know we kind of have a log-jam at safety with more quantity than quality, with the exception of Eric Weddle, but if Elam was actually making progress like the coaches said and he comes back healthy do you think there's any chance for him to play strong safety with Weddle playing free safety? It's just a thought I had yesterday what do you guys think?

He was not bad his first year here. Don't know what happened to him, wasn't too long ago he and Terrance Brooks were suppose to man the fort back there. With Weddle in the back they have a true safety they can be molded by in a perfect world. Will Hill failed my expectations (I felt he was top 5 safety in the league and after a year out of the game his first year with us proved it to me) but of course Hill could not keep his head on straight.

With Webb back there now it's going to have to be wait and see, he's going to have go out there and play very well for extra snaps...

That wasn't just chatter even one of the NFL  analyst showed up to The Ravens training camp and mention how Matt Elam looked more focused and etc

I don't have high expectations but will be curious to see him compete this year. Probably will have to do well on special teams if he wants to make the roster.

If he were to fix the mental mistakes though wouldn't you agree he would be our hardest hitting safety?

I feel like he will make the roster if he can show even some talent, since he is very cheap and knows the playbook.

Weddle

Webb

Elam

Brooks

Levine

Lewis

Perry? (one of these guys has to get cut or put on PS, if not 2)

perry or lewis might be the guy that was though of making the switch to LBer.

leaves the 5 others to be the safeties , unless we draft 1 or add another from FA.

Playing his natural position and maturation may be the ticket to NFL success for Matt.  I hope he turns out to be the beast he was thought to be.

He looked good in his rookie year and the times he was allowed to play his natural position so i'm optimistic

Yea that's exactly what I'm saying. If he can play in the box and roam the middle and just hit TE's and slot receivers and Weddle can play deep, that would be ideal

Playing the wrong position or not, dude can't tackle.  Not sure he can break the "I'm gonna try and strip the ball each and every time" crap or complete whiff!

This. Plus he's unintelligent. I don't see him succeeding.

I think he can improve because those weren't issues he had in college. If he can get his confidence back up I'm optimistic that he can play better. I think if he can build on his last offseason I would rather see him next to Weddle not Webb.

Elam will never make it in the NFL . I hate to say this because I wanted him to succeed .

He just doesn't have it. If he doesn't look good in camp , cut him!

What about Terrence Brooks?  At this point Elam is a 1st round special teams player..maybe not even that cause he cant tackle .

I feel like he has all the athletic ability in the world but hasn't gotten there yet mentally. I like him though I feel like he could be a good player if he can catch up mentally

I think if he does not show something more than we have seen in the past he will be lucky to even get a another look from any NFL  team....

Why don't we reserve judgment on Matt Elam and Terrence Brooks till OTA's and TC finish. We'll know how they're doing by then won't we? All I remember is how glowingly Pees spoke of Elam prior to his getting injured last year. He said the game had slowed down for him tremendously. Moreover, when a player is injured he typically still participates in game planning, etc with the team and is in meeting rooms with the other safeties. So, let's just wait and show some patience.

Funny because I was just watching some of his Florida tape. Tbh I still think he's got talent and can be a great S. I just hope we don't ask him to cover too much, because he's not good in coverage.

But if our secondary can continue to improve and add pieces + a good cover ILB to manage the TEs we could let him play as our In The Box SS (and not worry too much about the WR and TE) because he would be terrific in that role.

With Weddle, Jimmy back in shape, Shareece still improving and possibly another CB and a cover ILB in the draft, we can be solid in pass coverage, and that would let Elam be an impact player on the perimeter.

agreed.

not every player will be ready day 1.

if the game really slowed down for him we can expect a lot of improvement.

I agree 100%!!!!! I loved him coming out Florida! My brother is a huge Gators fan and every game I watched his senior season I found myself saying who is this guy and how can we draft him.

Well the secondary as a whole sucked and he never found his footing playing corner? Get real. That was a joke. He didn't build his confidence and was asked to think too much instead of playing instinctive football. Blame the FO for not keeping a vet like Graham and Pees for playing friendly football.

I think Leslie Frazier as the secondary coach will go a long way towards solidifying this group.

Yes agreed

Yeah, Elam is a bust. Silly to think that a 23 year old kid could have gained knowledge and maturity while sitting out a year. And how could Frazier possibly help him? No hope, just cut him now.   lol
