Tonight might be, or well actually is THE series that matters most if we are going to come from 3 games back to win the division. A 4 game series against Boston that will be really telling of the Orioles fate in a week or two. Either we win this division or we hope to hang on for a Wild Card or we miss completely as Detroit and Seattle are 2 games back in the Wild Card Race.

Just give it away why don't you Orioles? We need to win the last three of the series in order to ensure we still have a chance heading into the final week. Otherwise we might as well let Boston win the division now.

The good news is that Toronto and Seattle play each other and they are the primary competition for the wild card. Seattle 2.5 games behind us and Toronto .5 games pending their result tonight. Toronto currently is up 3-0.

Also the Astros are back in the mix for the wild card at 3 games back while Detroit had today off and is 2.5 games back.

Kansas City and New York are in dire straights right now at 5 and 4.5 games back respectively. Yankees off tonight as they head to Tampa, Kansas City got a win and head to Cleveland tomorrow.

Finally O's fans are taking a lesson from Colts fans who had to put up with Robert Irsay for years

Let’s talk about the attendance at Camden Yards

At this point, there’s no way to avoid talking about it: The attendance at Camden Yards lately has not been good. We get it. Every publication has written a story. Every upset uncle has typed a Facebook rant. We heard you. Loud and clear.

Last night, the Orioles lost 5-2 to the Red Sox in a pretty important game at home. They did so in front of 18,456 fans; a good chunk of which were supporting the visitors. Oriole Park holds about 45,000 people. So, that was disappointing in many ways. And to hear chants of “Let’s go Red Sox!” at several points in the game was enough to make any Birds fan a little miffed.

Of course, I observed all of this from the comfort of my couch. So, believe me, I’m not pointing fingers. We’re just talking here. Ya know, like friends.

The stats

I’m looking at BaseballReference.com for all of this information. According to BR, prior to last night’s game, the O’s had a total attendance this season of 1,976,194, which is an average of 26,705 per game. Both of those numbers sit them in 20th place of Major League Baseball, the lowest standing of any “contending” team.

At this point last season, the Birds had drawn 2,165,296 in attendance. That is an average of 29,261 per game. If I’m doing the math right (I’m probably not), that is about a nine percent decrease from a year ago.

On paper, that makes no sense. The 2016 version of the Orioles already has more wins than 2015’s team did and there are still two weeks to go. So, why aren’t people heading to the park?

Its PETER ANGELOS!!! The Fans are tired of him. Just like Baltimore Colts fans got sick n tired Bob Irsay. So let them move we will get a better team just like we got the RAVENS an better organization than the Colts.

You are going to blame poor attendance right now on Peter Angelos? No one cares right now who owns the team, as long as whoever it is shells out the cash to retain players and bring in new ones. Angelos has had a bad history here, but if I check the salary lists, we're right in the middle .... which given our market ... that's about as good as you can expect.

I actually came to this thread right now to see what people may be saying on this very topic, when I read ESPN making claims of this being like a defacto road game. I wanted to see if there was really any truth to it. Apparently, there is.

We want him to spend, but then won't come out in reasonable numbers in the midst of a pennant race to support the team? Because why? Because this guy milked the situation by keeping a sub-par roster for many years to profit? That has changed, but fans are going to continue to hold that against him and not show out? That's ridiculous.

The bottom line is this: hearing what I'm hearing now .. the % probability that we can resign Machado is sinking. To say that you want to see the Os leave the city, because by some birthright, we're just going to get gifted with a brand new team, get to keep the Os name and tradition and have some mythical ownership that is going to be willing to take financial losses by spending big money on a roster while we draw poor numbers is fantasy.

But why didn't he sign Johnny Cueto? why didn't he sign Scott Kazmir? Why didn't he sign J.A. Happ? And why didn't he sign Tony Sipp?  O's need pitching thats the missing link. The fact is our fans are tired of cheap players. Just like Irsay did on the Colts. If Irsay would had gave Elway a huge contract he would have played for the Colts.

I think that's BS.  Attendance on weekends is excellent.  The simple fact is that weeknight attendance is down all over MLB.  Those who can afford tickets have to get up in the morning and the games run too late.

I actually just went and check the stats.  Last year, after 79 home games we ranked 19th in attendance.  This year, after 75 home games we rank 20th.  There's very little drop off.  Considering the size of our market (and the encroachment of the Nats), we're right about where we should be expected to be.

No doubt it is hard to see how any stadium can get filled up. As you say, those with money are busy earning it during the week. Those not busy during the week, don't have money to burn (and burn a-plenty) by going to see a baseball game.

I don't live in town, so I can say I'm exempt from the conversation, but if I did live in town - would I have been at the park? I don't know ... I might have still tried to work in one game during this critical, critical series. Back in the day, when I lived there I had free time, little money - but of course it only cost me $3.50 to sit in Section 34 and be a part of Bill Hagy's brigade.

Even if you consider market and the typical attendance on a given weekday evening game, this isn't a typical weekday series and should not be typical weekday attendance. All I know is, it pains me to see us be deeply involved in a rare pennant race playing head-to-head with the team at the top and get shouted down by the opposing team's fans in our own park. No matter how you slice it, that's embarrassing.

I should throw out there that while the number of people coming to Camden Yards has dropped, the tv ratings have been extremely good this year.

Look how much Ravens tickets are. Anywhere between $100-$300 pending where you sit and they always sold out every game.

Look how Red Sox do it. They sign hitting and they signed pitching. Mr Angelos just goes for the bats no pitchers. Thats why the fans are sick n tired of supporting the O's just like how cheap Bob Irsay was with the Colts.

It is just amazing how a 40 year is having a career year. I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with PEDs. <_<

eh, I doubt it.  He's in great shape.

I think I heard them say he has hit 8 dingers against us this year?  Dag!

You do know that he was one of the players listed as having tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003. He has a giant head and it doesn't matter how great of shape you are in, you don't get better as you get older like that. Also, there have been many instances of roid rage. Sorry, but he is on something.

No. I didn't know that much about him.  Of course there's that possibility, but if he has tested positive in the past the chances of him being caught now increase dramatically. And to be frank, in 2003 I would bet that more players were using some sort of PEDS than were not.

Chris was recently caught for PEDS, right?  Do you think he's still using? Seems once you are caught and penalized it would be dumber than dumb to use again, especially in your final season.

Chris was caught with Adderall, a different situation. He is still using it as now he has the approved prescription. And as far as Ortiz being caught again, there are masking agents and there are those who don't want to find him guilty. He is a popular player.

And I forgot to add the most important piece of evidence, Boston teams love to cheat. :D

So we do agree. :D

I just hope that when I approach 40 my bat speed increases like that! Naturally, of course. :P
