[News] Late For Work 3/23: Watch John Harbaugh's Face After Learning Dwight Freeney Is Still Available

36 posts in this topic

I don't get Hensley's tweet. Anyone know what the "PM crowd" is?

I'm guessing the people who don't check ESPN in the morning but wait to read at night. It's him 'bumping' his story.

I like how they said Freeney was too expensive, $870k base with sack incentives of a million dollars, which to me, 10 sacks is worth the million lol The giants just gave Vernon $17 million a year for 8 sacks per year so.... But anyway, I hope they explore that option as I think that he could come here for less than 2 million and would practically be a third down specialist in a rotation with Suggs, Doom, and our future first rounder Joey Bosa. Getting to the QB would no longer be a problem

I think between Eric Weddle and Ben Watson, we've signed plenty of age on our roster. I really think we should stick to the draft and developing our existing pass rushers in lieu of signing Freeney. Why then would you cut Daryl Smith (who played stellar for us) and Canty? Doesn't compute.

cutting canty certainly does he is more interested in being a reporter analyst tv personality than a football player, daryl smith I agree we took him off a bad team he played stellar got his first playoff game then just as we are about to assume final form and get that lombardi we cut him

I think bringing Freeney is more of a luxury at this point, but would for sure be a nice addition. When we add quality and respected league veterans, I truly feel like it improves our teams morale and chemistry. Even though we would have a group of aged pass rushers, the experience alone would be enough to improve our defense.

Implies that was the price tag we could have gotten Freeney for in September, which is likely not the case. Babin signed in mid-September, and Freeney didn't sign with Arizona until mid-October. That's a full month during the season... certainly enough to drop a price tag.

I really don't have much interest in Freeney. He's the kind of guy that you pretty much know is going to wear down over the season, which is why he was so effective when he only had to play like 10 games last season.

We'll have Dumervil, Suggs, and Zadarius, and likely a draft pick. I wouldn't want Freeney taking any snaps from those guys.

He's the kind of guy you call if you have an injury or two.

If we were to sign Freeney it would be something small like a year or two year deal. Not worried either way.

... and that's exactly why I think he'll end up elswhere. His tape from last season will earn him a bigger chech than Ozzie would - quite rightly so - be willing to give him.

Buckner has been steadily crawlng upwards in the mocks, while Bosa has been trendeing down. As things look now - I mean as far as you can make any mean ingful prediction based on mocks... - there's a decent chance that Buckner will be picked ahead of Bosa - and sooner than our #6...

The reason Baltimore passed on Freeney last year, per Hensley, is because his salary demands were ultimately too high. He signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals for a reported $870,000 and $1 million in sack incentives.

ummm....That's 8-9 year vet minimum.
Freeny just finished his FOURTEENTH season.

so im confused.

Partial year perhaps? He didn't sign until mid-October.

Don't believe you get a full year salary if you sign on mid-season.

Could also be mis-reported number. Max veteran salary was $970K in 2015, so really talking semantics.

you get whatever they offer you when you sign midseason.
The Cardinals offer just happened to coincide with the minimum yearly salary for a 9 year vet.

It's not semantics. Freeney signed for a roll of bubble tape. we werent that close to the cap.
Plus we lost Suggs week 1. Nobody was beating down Freeney's door, its not like he had so many options.

1. The semantics is over contract value. $970K vs $870K doesn't matter.

2. Again, this isn't an apples to apples comparison. Babin signed in September... Freeney signed a month later... a full 6 games into the season basically. As time goes by, price tag decreases. Freeney could have been asking for twice that in September for all we know, because it was basically week 2. A month goes by and nobody calls... you lower your asking price.

He was the homeowner who priced his house too high and nobody showed interest. He got a much lower offer than he was probably asking for after time goes by, and he realized it might be his only one. So he takes the deal.

We were one of 31 other NFL teams who chose not to sign him all offseason and for 6 weeks of the regular season.

It does matter when the excuse offered for not signing him is salary demands that are too high. He signed for less than he was rightfully due, and no more than any minimum salary on the pay scale.

The point either way is that he didnt cost that much.

and i highly doubt he spent the whole off season off roster in his 14th year after two completely forgettable seasons and still sought a $2 million deal as an emergency depth signing. He's not stupid. He only played 20 games in the previous two seasons and tallied up 4 sacks and 12 tackles. his numbers as of late dont add up to that kind of money. You're talking outlier possibilities.

The San Diego deal was for $2.5M.
he mightve been fool enough to leave SD with those crap stats and still try to ask for the same last March, but he certainly wouldve wised up by September after the whole league passed on him.

I'm looking for post draft cut pass rushers to be looked at, as this draft seems loaded with solid pass rushers....

Ravens aren't done in free agency yet, but my guess is they are until the draft. Also, why are we worried about whether or not we signed Freeney last year? It's already over, and hindsight is 20/20.

Adding Freeney would be a good rent -a- player situation for us. He is not a long term answer but could help right now. He would also specifically address one more position of need (Pass RUSHER, CB, T) by eliminating as many of our holes before the draft... allows us the freedom to draft according to our philosophy of taking the best player available.

I was shocked to see them sign Babin over Freeney last season and then to have him released after 1 or 2 games. stupid for us not to even have him in for a talk...

Not hindsight for me, Freeney over Babin was always a no brainer in my view. i opposed signing Babin through and through. outside of two random years where he made some noise fro TEN and PHI, he's always been a fairly average dude at best.

I was just trying to make sense out of it again since this piece stated Freeney's salary demands were too high and then told us he signed with the Cards for a can of pringles in the same sentence.
