Do we have the TE market cornered?

I think we keep 4. Maxx, Crockett, and Watson are safe. Then maybe Waller, Fore, or another TE as a 4th. We'll definitely have 1 or 2 on the practice squad too. I'm not sure what happens with Nick Boyle.

Williams, Gilmore, and Watson are pretty much guaranteed to make the roster.  If Boyle hasn't been cut yet, he'll at least be part of the team during his suspension.  Waller, unfortunately, likely goes the route of Bryan Hall (mentioned on another thread).  Asked to switch positions and still cut before the season starts.

I doubt we keep 4 TEs unless the Practice Squad is included so that means they'll game with Boyle as injury insurance.  If nobody is hurt by week 11 from the TE position, I see Boyle getting cut

I think Waller is kept until Boyle returns from suspension

This is a TE friendly offense. 4 is definitely not out of the realm of possibility. I think we would have kept 4 last year had we a viable option.

The interesting aspect is that Gillmore is probably the best blocker of the group, though Watson is pretty solid there also. As such, if his injury makes the start of the season or inhibits him in camp/preseason, we'd probably be in the market for a blocking TE, which Maxx and Waller clearly aren't.

That makes Waller expendable to me, possibly replaced by a blocking TE.

If we wanna talk about blocking tes, Waller comes from a triple option and was an elite blocker as a wr, while I think his move to TE was unwise I wouldn't rule out his potential to block, even if it's a different world blocking the front seven compared to the secondary, he still understands the intricacies of blocking very well since that was his primary job throughout college, he also appeared to be quite a special teams player last year as well.

I think Waller makes the team. Showed his worth on special teams last year and will be the 4th TE to take place of the 6/7th WR spot on the 53 man roster. Could play under both positions if injuries arise again.

I would love to see us use two tight end sets like the pats did back when they had hernandez.   Honestly I don't know if it's over played or not with them doing that,  would love on see stats on how much gronk and Hernández were on the field together compared o he rest of the league.

Your on to them. They reinstated the scheme with their most recent signing. Just in the form of double bulk. It could conceivably work in the dink and dunk to open up the rest of the field. Those sneaky Pats.

I think both of these statements are probably true. Keeping 4 TEs would make sense if they are moving to a more TE-heavy offense, as seems to be the case judging from their recent moves. Plus they could potentially see Waller as a hybrid TE/WR and core special teams player (he did well in special teams iirc), meaning he could technically be a 4th TE.

I also think that Boyle pushes someone off the roster upon his return IF: 1) he shows improvement to become a very good player during training camp, and 2) if one of our main 3 TEs are injured and/or put on IR by week 11. If they don't have room for Boyle, I wonder if they could come up with a mysterious injury to stash him on IR.

Yeah, that's why I don't understand the move to TE. We have 3 TE's basically guaranteed on the roster, and Waller has to fight Boyle and whoever for a potential 4th spot if we keep a 4th. Seems it would make more sense to leave him at WR at see what he can do.

Maybe we need a vertical, seam stretching TE and not another blocker? Not that Boyle, Williams, and Gillmore suck at catching the ball. Williams is the best vertical TE we have but I think Waller could be deadlier in that role due to his speed. We probably also just like him better in that role, too.

Ding ding ding. I think this is exactly the reason you move Waller to TE. He's a decent big WR but he'll be a nightmarish match-up at TE.

I also wonder about Waller's weight and body type. Maybe getting profession nutrition and training has Waller getting bigger and he's just outgrowing the WR position but in a good way.

Your probably right but I really hope that doesn't happen. We have a top 10 TE in Watson for this year and probably next year. Gilmore and Williams may never be 1000 yard TEs but they both have the potential to be complete packages by the time Watson hands over the reigns. Waller is a guy with measurables similar to Graham. If he ads 15 pounds of muscle and gets his teqnique right then we may have a deadly trio in a few years. I really hope we hold on to him for at least 1 more year.

If we really really need that roster spot I'd hope we IR him and redshirt him for the year before we let someone else snatch him. 6'6 245 pounds with a 4.45 40 don't grow on trees lol

They moved Waller to TE because he's not a good enough WR to make the squad at WO. Putting him at TE gives him an opportunity to make the squad in the absence of Boyle. If Waller makes the squad, he will be put on IR once Boyle comes back. Book it.

Having Juice on this squad really kills the opportunity to have a max number of playmakers on the squad. But with that said, Juice really got better and showed something in the last quarter of the season.
