2016 Backup QB Thread

17 posts in this topic

I don't think I've seen a thread for backup QBs. Anyway, I'll preface this by explaining the need.

1) Ryan Mallet is a FA after 2016, meaning it could make sense to keep a 3rd QB on the roster this year to groom for after his departure

2) Getting a backup QB on a rookie contract will save cap space if he is our only backup (as opposed to a veteran)

3) We may start the season with Mallet as our starter if Joe is still rehabbing his knee, meaning we may need a 3rd QB to backup the backup (I know Joe is on pace to start week 1, but it's still a possibility)

4) It couldn't hurt to start grooming a QB now to possibly succeed Joe if he isn't performing up to his contract 4-5 years from now

5) If our backup looks good, we could fleece someone for a draft pick or get a compensatory pick if he leaves

I really like Kevin Hogan. He seems like he is very intelligent, a good leader, has a good arm, and has some mobility (I really like mobile backup QBs because they can put their health on the line with less risk involved to pick up first downs). He comes from a pro offense. He may never be a phenomenal starter, but he seems like he could be a good backup. I think he'll probably be gone by the 4th round, since teams all over the place need QBs (even backup QBs). I wouldn't be disappointed if we took Hogan with one of our late 4th round picks, and I'd be ecstatic if he was there in the early 6th. Maybe I've watched too many of Hogan's good games and not enough of his bad ones

Some other intriguing options if they start to fall are Cardale Jones and Jacoby Brissett. Both will probably go on day 2, but if Cardale were to fall into the late 4th I would be intrigued, even with more important needs than backup QB. I love Cardale's cannon arm (it honestly may be stronger than Joe's), and Brissett is pretty strong and athletic too, but I would rather have him in the high 6th. But this is probably all a moot point, since both will probably be taken.

QBs I'm really low on are Dak Prescott (and not because of his DUI), Joel Stave, and Vernon Adams. Prescott reminds me so much of Tebow. He looks to run too often and he is not an accurate passer. It amazes me that he had a day-2 projection. Having watched a lot of Wisc. games, it amazes me to no end that Stave is considered to be worth a roster spot. He has some of the worst accuracy I have ever seen of a starting college QB. Vernon Adams should switch to WR. He's too inaccurate to be a QB and too small to be a running QB.

Who have you guys got your eye on? And please, please don't make this a "replace Flacco" troll thread.

Christian Hackenberg out of Penn State

But how high would you draft a backup QB? If you want Hack, you would need to spend a 3rd most likely. That's too high imo. Although I get the argument for drafting backups high. That's what the Patriots did with Mallet and Garoppolo; what the Redskins did with Cousins; what the Eagles did with Kolb and Foles. You can get a decent return on an investment like that, but only if they get playing time to showcase their skills. Until Flacco hurt his knee, you never even got to see his backups lol.

I would send a roumd3 pick for Murray or Mettenberger. In my opinion  it is important to find a backup that could be a franchise QB if given the opportunity. Murray's armstrength was questioned and there was an Injury or he would of been a round2-3 pick. He showed he can put the ball up nearly 70yards which is a pretty big arm. There is media and assistants in Tennessee that acknowledge he has more arm talent than The young highly touted early draft pick.

I'm a bit surprised mettenberger didn't have more suitors in trade. He could be a lot better than these replacement level guys for sure. Although maybe the Titans aren't listening. Why trade away a good cheap option especially when your QB could be prone to injury.

A lot of teams value him highly simply because he will be a very capable backup-caliber QB. I've heard as early as 3rd round, but anything on day 3 is probably more realistic.

I'll co sign on him. Like what I've seen and heard about him. He would be taken with my third fourth. Mallet actually has great value. Injuries will happen to Teams primary QB and guess what Mallet has talent/Experience/and athletic to succeed given another chance to prove he can lead a team. He's a bargaining chip at best. Our back up at worst. And I love his skill set. He was actually as advertised when he arrived and thus far been on point. Hogan is my frontrunner.

I would like to keep Mallet. Personally

Update: Ravens held a private meeting with MSU's Connor Cook.

They also interviewed Jake Rudock, perhaps as a camp arm or something, since he seems undraftable.

There's also the legendary Harbaugh connection.

Very interesting that they'd interview Cook since that indicates a degree of interest and he's likely to be a second round pick. I don't think it's a slight against Joe's knee since he's doing well, so it's really an interesting move...
