Full Back?

20 posts in this topic

The Ravens with the new W additions have a very potent  offense now plus  our QB is almost 100 % and the LONG BOMBS WILL BE RETURNING .  We already have at least two other young strong receivers that are itching to make first team I only wish we could find another gold full back like the Punisher. Vonta Leach was a gold mind full back. He hit like an on coming train. He made holes where there was nothing. If it was third down and two he would get you three. Many times I saw him take down two guys at a time allowing our running back big holes. I have not seen a full back like him for a few years now. Leach had big thighs and big shoulders so when he hit you it would cause you to really shake your head. Todays full backs are thin copies of yester years..

That kind of fb is just a dead breed. Its all about mismatches and creating space now and you can't create space if you're trying to jam 2 people through 1 gap. The game is far too fast now for it to be effective, FB leads are slow developing runs and the small amount of space created closes much faster than it opens. Having a quick footed and cohesive line is more important for a ZBS as they function as a unit and cover each other's weaknesses, and a 0-60 rb with good vision is how you capitalize on the gaps created. A true pound the rock game plan just doesn't work consistently anymore, you need a patient rb who finds the lane and explodes through before it can close, a FB just clutters that up.

I loved leach when he was here, but the days of the bruising FB is far past gone. We are better off with a tough and athletic h-back like juice, always someone who needs to be accounted for and can still put some pads on people.

Idk man if the Linebacker meta trends towards smaller faster sideline to sideline guys that can cover the new breed of TE; then a hard running behemoth of FB starts to look attractive again, imo.

College teams just don't develop FB's like they once did. The College game is all about spread offense, I mean Alabama didn't even have a true FB this season. We've seen the last of the old school, true FB's and Leach was probably the last one.

But the defenders are too fast for such a slow paced style of offense. You're asking your rb to follow a big slow fb through a hole and he then has to cut just to get around the lead block, most of the time your rb will end up 1 yard past and have to run right into a tackler just to get away from the fb.

Its not like the fb is actually creating a gap or a run lane, it does the opposite and clutters the play even more.

Really a fb only functions on the goal line anymore.

McClain wasn't a slouch either.  He just burned his bridge soliciting for more carries.

He was actually much better as a part time runner I think, he was no slouch as a receiver either, his blocking was nowhere close to leach and Neal though.

I do miss watching McClain from 08, he was probably the most entertaining part of that whole season aside from us finally having a qb. It was seriously a blast watching such a huge man make cuts so well and bowl over the likes of Lawrence Timmons and others.

The Cowboys game that year was pretty awesome. He ran all over them to close out their old stadium!!!!

I think Juszczyk is the new breed of FB. He's a very versatile athlete, i don't think we use him to his full capabilities, but that could be because we haven't had a deep threat.

These spread offenses in college are killing this type of pro game. Heck its hard to find a TE let alone a FB.

Even on the goaline now they just throw a massive lineman out there to block. Todays FB is like a TE or an HBack but I guess now you gotta call an HB a TB or a RB so you don't confuse it with a HBack.  In other words yesterdays FB  :toilet:

It seems like we start every game with a toss to Juszczyk in the flat for about a 6 yard gain. Can a traditional FB do that? Hah! No.

We did the same thing with Leach. Juice is an offensive crunch, not a bell cow; and that is a problem.
