[News] Late For Work 3/17: What Is Future Of Will Hill's Career? Courtney Upshaw Visits New York Jets

38 posts in this topic

I hope Will Hill gets his life together. He has enough money to live the rest of it without finances being an issue. He would have been an expensive back up if he stayed. We will go a double Free Safety look which might not be bad since both Weddle and Webby are sure tacklers. This is a big opportunity for Elam as the only real Strong option we have at the moment. I hope he can learn with a new DB coach and Weddle as a leader in the Secondary.

The NFL should allow players to smoke for pain and good sleep, it's better than majority of these pain pills they allow that does kidney and liver damage, etc. I don't smoke because my job doesn't allow it but my job doesn't come with tremendous pain either, then just maybe I would need it just for a good night's rest.

Now I think We need a LT, a good 5 technique, Corner, backup Guard/Center, Outside LB before the season starts and we will be golden.

Pretty sad what Hill's done to himself. Nice guy with a problem he is unable to resolve. Needs help. Hope he gets it and comes back stronger than ever.

Hill's job wouldn't allow it either.

OMG.. that whole string of texts from the Steelers fan to Weddle are hysterical!  Starts out "I love you man.." and ends, not so nice. :)

I guess Hill didn't get the memo to just say "NO".....He knew he was going to be on a tight leash, and with the zero tolerance stance the organization has taken on since the RR nightmare, he went ahead and blew living the dream.....

I am either hoping the Jets sign Upshaw to a qualifying contract so we get our 3rd round comp pick for Osemele. Alternately, I would like Upshaw to rejoin the Ravens on a team friendly contract.

I'm not sold on not needing a inside Linebackers to. Pats have two MONSTER TE's

I think Upshaw is much better than what we would more than likely get from a 5th round or later pick. He did a lot of the Dirty work.

Pay the Jets a few bucks to get rid of Upshaw, another "Alabama" underachiever, wasted early round draft pick by Ozzie. Now if only they would take Elam as well.

You must not watch film. Upshaw has done a real good job for us. He is a very underrated player. We can only hope he comes back this year.

Will Hill violating drug policy with his career on the line again? Besides being disappointed and sad for his lack of judgment, I simply can't understand anyone thinking the risk of getting caught is worth taking. Hill had some talent and I wrongly thought he had pulled himself together, grew up and got his career on track. It's a shame and I am not sure if any team is going to take a chance on him now after 4 violations.

The timing and effort the ravens put into signing Weddle makes me wonder just how much heads up they were given from the league about the impending suspension of Will Hill. The team has been very careful about what they say about the acquisition but if we didn't get Weddle and found out our best safety was suspended, there was nothing else out there on the market. The effort that everyone put in was over the top for any free agent ever signed with the Ravens and I am not a conspiracy theory person, but there are enough circumstantial facts that open a can of worms if a news agency really started digging. Maybe there is nothing and the Ravens are the beneficiary of the greatest coincidence in the history of their free agency or someone dropped a dime and let DeCosta in on the Hill suspension.

Confused on compensatory picks formula as noted in this article. As I understand the 3 picks the Ravens got for this draft (April 28th) was determined by any UFA lost versus those signed (I think by June 1st). The Ravens lost: T Smith, McPhee, Daniels, Stewart and Taylor and we brought in Lewis. This meant we could get up to 4 picks. The NFL only rewards 30 some comp picks total and no more than 4 to any one team. Balt only got 3 because Tyrod's contract wasn't high enough.

So using that formula thus far thr Ravens have signed Weddle and Watson (2) and lost Osemele, Givens and Schaub (3). We are therefore entitled to one pick and Osemele will be one of the top salaries for FAs and will bring the Ravens a 3rd or at the very least a 4th round comp pick next year. We still have two other UFAs in Clausen and Upshaw. And assuming these two go elsewhere that give the Ravens a potential of 3 picks (lose 5 and add two). We'd get picks for Osemele and Upshaw (expect him to sign for $15 to $20 million with someone. The other three Schaub, Givens and Clausen salaries won't lead to actual comp picks.

It's not a simple losses minus gains formula. A player's contract has to qualify to count as a loss OR gain. It's a "secret" minimum amount but has proven to be about $1 million the last few years. So, look at it this way, FA have to sign for $1 million or more before they count. So Givens doesn't count as a loss (under $1 million). The good news is that we can also sign a FA for under $1 million and it doesn't count.

Well... Webby seems to have 9 lives here in BMORE... I hope that he does the Rod Woodson / Charles Woodson thing... making the transition from CB to a top notch S... Really glad we landed Weddle now! Curious is Elam and Brooks can take the next step? and the impact of Leslie Frazier on the DBackfield?

Perhaps hill told the ravens once notified that he'd be tested that he'd be dirty?

Man, Will Hill is so talented. I remember talking to my Giants-fan buddy about this up and coming rookie who was lighting it up at safety. His athleticism and talent was so evident any time he took the field, neither of us understood how he went undrafted. Then the suspensions started coming in, and he would eventually fall out of favor with the Giants and sign with Baltimore. I really hoped it'd give him some perspective and that he'd turn his career around as he is clearly so capable of doing. Such a shame man, between him, Josh Gordon, and Justin Blackmon we have seen some really incredible talent fall victim to something as frivolous as smoking marijuana.

I really wish this guy all the best in the future, I know Ravens fans won't forget the kick-six any time soon. And how fun would it be for the Browns to get Gordon back? That dude is a generational level talent, I'm talking Calvin Johnson/Dez Bryant/Julio Jones level.

I dunno if this would be a popular move considering he'll sit out all season and from what I've heard he might not be able to be the same player, but I am so sold on Jaylon Smith's talent that I would be happy for us to toss our second round pick at him just for the chance to have him eventually suit up for us. He's Myles Jack and more. My pipe dream: if we can't get Bosa/Ramsey/Tunsil/Jack with the 6 pick, trade back and grab an extra second round pick so we can invest one in Smith.

I think according to the Sun papers the fo knew about suspension.

There is a slight problem to your theory and that is the fact that Marijuana is still illegal as a national crime under federal law, despite what individual states have ruled. So the NFL saying it is okay really doesn't matter when it is a federal crime.

You musn't watch film either. There are plenty of times when Upshaw fails to set the edge and it was actually exposed by the Browns of all teams who kept running counter plays. Instead of setting the edge and not allowing the play to come to him, Upshaw decided to rush the QB and completely missed the plays as the RB ran right by him.

He's okay as a one dimensional player. He had his chance to be a full time starter this year and prove he's not a one trick pony. He failed to shine. You can find another player like him in the draft and you know, find one that might also be able to rush the QB a bit more without being late to the party all the time. Let some other team give him a raise.

I'm not hoping he comes back. Remember this guy was a second round pick. He should be better than just okay.

And there are guys that do the dirty work a lot better than Upshaw did. Namely the guy he replace in Jarrett Johnson. The Ravens got Pernell McPhee with a late pick like you bring up for some reason. You do know that Upshaw was a second round pick, not a late pick gem?

I'd take my chances on a 3rd or 4th round pick to replace Upshaw in a heartbeat.
