If Elam pans out, he'll just became like Will Hill because they are the same type of safety. Why hope for Elam to become a good SS when you already have one. Also Will Hill is only 26 and Elam is 24 so is not like age is a factor. Also Elam is coming off a torn acl!!!

He won't pan out. Dude is dumb as rocks and can't tackle for crap

Still waiting on Daryl Smith to come back on a lesser deal too, since cutting him didn't make any sense unless we draft an ILB.

Two great moves sandwiched between two that leave me scratching my head

I think Daryl could come back later this offseason but his cut made plenty of sense, he's older, he regressed last year, and for what we were paying him we can afford someone else. Not to mention we can draft someone or give Brown a shot, we drafted him relatively high so maybe it was time to cut the cord and throw him out there.

Both the Browns and the Steelers are looking for a safety, if he goes to one of them then this is the worst move in recent memory.

To top this off, Trawick just signed with the Raiders. So there goes a solid ST and backup S. That really means we are relying on Lewis and Elam as our backups.

Woof.

The panic is real. He was not as good as you guys make him out to be.

Safety gets its name for a reason, they're the safety net of the defense, he left his cbs out to dry too often and was a big part of why we gave up so many big plays. He only works on a team with a strong group of cbs and a TRUE fs who can cover his mistakes

I heard he's footlockers best salesman during the offseason.

Hill isn't great in coverage and at times was late to his spot but...There better be more to this because Hill at SS (his true position) and Weddle at FS would have been baller. Now the FO just took a massive step back by relying on Elam (who is coming off a torn acl), Webb (two torn acls, obviously lost a step), and Lewis (who never really looked good out there). This is probably the dumbest move the FO has made in recent memory. God, I hope they prove me wrong. I'm livid right now.

Defiantly could have sworn Matt Elam had a torn bicep and not an acl, so I'm going to need people to chill on the him being a bum thing. Two season in and his third taking away by injury. I'm sure what we saw his first second year isn't something writing in stone. Give the guy a chance to prove himself. Oh and Weddle will definitely be playing the FS position..why move him to SS?

Trawick was far from a solid backup, and we can fill his ST hole rather easily with Matthews

The panic is because of who we're putting our faith in behind him!!!

Agreed. I liked him as a player, but the secondary clearly improved when he was benched for Webb.

From week 9-17, Hill was rated the 70th best safety by PFF. 70th!!

I said backup. Not a solid backup. Please re-read.

How? I wouldn't mind seeing him biting on a pump fake and watching perriman zoom through his deep zone without even making an effort

I can only assume we are going to hear he did something dumb off-field very soon. His contract was very tradable.

He was our best SS, our best safety from a performance to salary ratio, and he gave us security for if/when Webb gets injured.

I can discredit those weeks. We were already in full tank mode by that point and were starting to try guys out at all various positions.

Hill is only 26 years old and before the end of the year last year, was nothing but a very good safety his whole career.

If we did this to sign, Okung, i'll be fine (which isn't a reality).

Other than that, I do not get this move AT ALL.

Some people on here are overreacting but you are going to the other extreme and being just as unreasonable. He was rated as one of the best safeties in the game last year and during the first half of this past season, before our season was officially over, he was doing fantastic.

Hill lacked leadership skills and the smarts to be relied on at safety. He could make plays but really he's not a fit in a Pees defense. He doesn't get nearly enough turnovers and he's frequently late in coverage. I'm fine with this. I have a gut feeling that he was 100 percent responsible for the constant miscommunications Harbaugh and Pees always talked about in the secondary.

Again, our pass defense got significantly better when he was off the field. I don't think that's coincidental, and I don't think it's a factor of playing mediocre offenses.

Moreover, we currently have one of the best DB coaches in the NFL, maybe even the best. If Hill was that good, Frazier might have fought to keep him here. I guess they just didn't see the talent.

Daryl Smith made perfect sense, yeah he was an awesome player and didn'y show signs of slowing down but the front office wants to get younger and Daryl was on the back side of 30 and they want more of dude that can pass cover while CJ checks the run of goes after the QB. I will miss the picks though what a LB. I still think he'll be back

I wouldn't exactly jump for joy with another injury prone tackle but it would be something - it's not happening but it'd be something

I can't help but think of the saying "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

Hill seemed like the most reliable member if the secondary.  I hope this works out.

Yep, bingo. Hill screwed over DBs way too much when he was in deep zones. He had a tendency to freelance too much.

Dont think he was rated one of the best safeties last year. Weeks 1-8 he was rated 4th, weeks 9-17 he was rated 70th. Not sure where he wound up overall, but i imagine somewhere in the middle.
