Will Hill released

The FO handled the whole thing poorly. Release him and say that he's getting suspended. Don't try to make it seem like a money move when we have far worse contracts on the books.

Everyone here is trying to justify the release when any sane individual knew it was a bad move money wise and talent wise.

You mean because you had to wait an hour to find out he had been suspended?   What if it was the other way around?  He got suspended and we had to wait an hour to hear he was released?  Then people would be yelling on here an hour for him to be released. Man a whole hour some people in the world are spoiled.

Can we just have ONE offseason where people don't get fined or in trouble? This is starting to get irritating if it isn't already. These  guys are grown men, and are getting paid big money doing someone some of us could only dream of. How about they start acting like me and taking advantage of their opportunities...

If Will Hill hadn't been suspended multiple times before for this same thing he would have never been on the team to begin with. So I don't think this is unexpected.  It is like signing Johnny Manziel now and getting upset that he is going to nightclubs before games.  We knew what we were getting we were willing to take the risk.

Weddle is a 5 time All Pro safety, I think he will do ok

Yes at playing FS. I don't know what is hard to understand about what I'm saying. The SS is the one the guards the TE. One of either Webb or Weddle are going to have to do it and they don't have much experience at doing so. I feel like I'm talking to myself.

Well this makes sense now. I am curious to see if we knew anything before signing Weddle.

My sense is Weddle's signing had nothing to do with Hill, but I suspect they knew and that made the signing that much more important for 2016. My point is they would have gone after Weddle even if Hill wasn't in trouble, but now it made too much sense.

Wish the Ravens would announce WHY they were cutting someone instead of waiting a couple of hours for the news to come out. PR's been really getting on my nerves lately

They prob cant say anything about it publicly until the league announces it... but knew about it before it came out. They made the cut before and may have had their hands tied.

hes been suspended by the league 10 games for failing a drug test.

And as much as we all dont like Lewis, he did play along side Webb when our secondary was vastly improved at the end of the season. Maybe stylistically he wasnt a fit to play alongside Hill.

This is on Will, yeah I think the FO could have waited until his suspension was announced but you can't blame Ozzie and the FO for something out of their control. Hill has been in the league long enough to know he will be tested randomly. Shame, was looking forward to our new look secondary with the addition of Weddle.

The only thing that I don't get is that Nick Boyle got suspended 10 games and he wasn't cut. Hill suspended 10 games and he's cut?

10 games ?
Yup, that will do it.

Betcha' Ozzie put in a "morality clause" in his contract due to his preexisting history.
Didn't he start last year with a six game suspension or was that the year before.

Either way, apparently being on the team just wasn't important enough.

Also, I see a lot of Webb hate in this thread.  I am gonna bookmark this thread and come back and see who is brave enough to eat crow when Webb shines in the safety position ( and plays a full season ).

Zrebiec said that Hill was told upon signing that he had one chance.

Hill has guaranteed money that would count against the cap beside the forfeiture of his game checks, is his 4th offense, and saved $3m by getting cut.

You are talking to yourself, Harbaugh said there is no FS or SS position anymore and that they're interchangeable. Every safety in the league is smaller than the tight ends they cover.

When was boyles first offense?

One of them still has to cover the TE. It doesn't matter if they have a SS, FS, or whatever designation you want them to have.

Yes, every team has a SS that has to cover TE's that are bigger than them. But most SS are much bigger than Weddle and Webb because they are both in the FS mild and not SS. It's like you are telling me that smaller FS's would cover Gronk as well as Chancellor would be able to because he's an all pro.

I mean I'm not sure how much easier I can say what I'm saying so that you'd comprehend it. May be just leave it go and stop responding.

Makes sense that Hill was released if he's being suspended, but man does that hurt the team, cause I don't think we have another good safety after Weddle.

you can defend a TE without matching up size wise. it definitely helps, but quickness and positioning can minimize the effectiveness of a TE.

I see us using linebackers to cover TEs more than safeties if possible. Upshaw was surprisingly good at it if we bring him back. Myles Jack would be a great solution, and if not a guy like Dansby in FA is great in coverage. Mosley should show improvement there, Orr has shown potential, and Brown would be useful in that regard if he can prove not to be a liability in other aspects of the game.

Elam and Brooks could also be used in specific situations.

I think Brooks should step up this year since it's his third year and usually you see progression in safeties in their third year as they start to finish their development. Elam may also surprise. I'm not getting my hopes up on Elam. I think Webb and Weddle should do a good job back there. Hopefully Webb stays healthy.

Webb's health is a massive concern I think, and Elam I've almost given up on but I understand where you're coming from. Brooks on the other hand I was really excited about when we drafted him, and man I hope this is his year.

no one is doubting his abilities but he hasn't had much xp at safety yet.... everyone was questioning the fact hill was cut with a savings of 3M with lewis, elam, and brooks coming off an injury and fragile webb still around. this was prior to it being announced he was suspended.

I think having Weddle is really going to help the development/play of the other safeties. Having someone who can legitimately provide cover and communicate assignments on the back end should allow the other guys to play free and focus on their assignments.

Elam was asked to do alot, rightfully so as a 1st round pick, but more than i think he was capable of being.

It's been a long wait to see Brooks get a fair chance to start for us. He's dealt with injuries, lack of experience, and fixable mistakes, but now in his third year I think he could finally get his chance. Also, Weddle is a similar player to Brooks in my opinion so maybe Weddle could be helpful to the further development of Brooks.

I think Weddle will help too. I would like to see a duo of Weddle and Brooks as the FS and SS. They are similar players and both bring hard hits, good tackling, and athleticism. Plus we all know Weddle is a proven cover guy, so it would help Brooks out and hopefully he can become a proven cover guy as well.

Yep, Brooks should. Let's hope he stays healthy though.
