[News] Wide Receiver Darren Waller Making Move To Tight End

51 posts in this topic

I said this all last year that he would make a good tight end. If he adds about 20 lbs of muscle without losing his speed, he will be incredible.

So Gillmore played with 2 torn labrums in both his shoulders? It must have been painful to block 300 lb bull rushers with that issue. Rehab hard and get back for TC Crockett.

I agree. I can't wait to see 3 or 4 TEs out there at once.

So my best guess is that the opening roster carries 3 Tight Ends.
53 Man: Williams (lock), Watson (lock), and Waller (valuable ST performer).
SUS: Boyle (10 games)
PUP: Gillmore (6-10 games)
CUT: Ford, Reuland, Spears, Pitta.

Interesting. First thing I thought is, that makes sense especially considering he should have decent run blocking coming from a run first college program. Then I saw his scouting report and it listed it as a weakness. Oh well, lol. At least if it works out he'll be a ridiculous mismatch on speed alone.

I find this to be so funny because when Waller was drafted last year there were a few people that kept saying he had the size to be a TE, and every time that was mention a few of the know it all types rain down on them with negativity smh lol...

Yet a year later the team is making this move of Waller to TE. Now I'm not sure if this is a positive for the team because reports were we signed Watson due to uncertainty of Gilmore following shoulder surgeries, along with suspension of Boyle and Pitta (whom needs to retire).

Update in Gilmore : Well a new article just posted gave positive updates on Gilmore status going forward.

i am a huge fan of this move. with hard work he could be a force at least in the red zone area. he may not be a shannon sharpe or julius thomas but he could be a player that will cause matchup problems for defenses

This is getting crazy. Crockett, Maxx, Watson, Waller, Boyle (when back from susp.). And they tendered Chase Ford and have yet to cut Pitta. I look forward to running some 7-TE sets.

I really think he would make a bigger impact for us at WR

He's going to line up in the slot and on the outside just as a receiver would. Calling him a TE is all semantics. The guy isn't going to be lined up inline very often. He is more of a move tight end like Jimmy Graham. Whether he is called a move TE or WR doesn't really make a difference because they do the same things.

It may make a difference when its time to pay up but hopefully it wont come to that lolz.

I'm interested to see him block. If he can play the position with some physicality I think he might turn some heads.

This is weird. Why he want to be a TE? His body and shape doesn't feel or look like a TE. He would have to gain at least 20 to 25 lbs to be in a shape of a TE. Probably would have to bulk up. But l think he should stay at Wr his body doesn't look like it to me.

We made need to if we don't beef up the o-line.

I think this is a good idea as it gives the Ravens and Waller options. It allows the Ravens the flexibility of having a backup should anything happen to the TEs that we currently have and with his speed and height could also create matchup problems. He can still be used at WR as well. It benefits Waller as it gives him options as well!

This doesn't bode well for Nick Boyle...
But yo know what? If Waller outperforms Boyle, why not?

We'll see. Let the better one prevail.

I suggested this a few weeks ago.  Williams, Watson and Waller.  Sounds like a law firm.

Strange, I had the feeling that we have a WR who could make a good TE and would have a better chance there - but it wasn't Waller - it was Dan Brown.
But Waller seems to phisically have what it takes, too. Interesting experiment, we'll see.

It gives both he and the Ravens options. He can still be used as a WR.

If I was a 6th rd draft choice I would be happy to play anywhere

creating a competitive atmosphere for a few roster spots at tight end is the smart thing to do. look forward to watching it play out. would not surprise me if they came up with a season ending injury for waller in training camp to allow him an off season to bulk up, improve blocking techniques and the mental part of it

Ozzie was drafted as a WR but converted to a TE and he did pretty good. I don't look for Boyle to be around if he doesn't straighten up his act and soon. Waller will be a receiving TE. THAT will be some miss-match.

With his speed at that size, good luck to any LB trying to cover him. And that means you will have two solid run block TEs and Williams that can play slot and outside in the red zone. Pitta I think is done and Boyle may have already worn out his welcome. TBH, if it works with the Waller at TE situation, I wouldnt mind keeping Waller, Gilmore, Maxx, and Boyle and do a lot more two and three TE sets.

he can't but neither can Jimmy Graham and he's a pro bowler. We already have enough blocking tight ends. Now we have a joker TE who really shouldn't be asked to block all that often

he is already 250lbs, he really doesn't need to bulk up at all. His body and shape are perfect for a joker TE

he doesn't need to bulk up, I am not sure why people are saying that. He is 6'6 245-50 which is the perfect size for a Joker TE.  He isn't going to be asked to block a whole bunch.
